  1. As this discussion has moved away from the original question about commercial film locations onto the hoary old chestnut of British Pubs (yet again!) maybe I could ask a related question. Towards the end of each cache page there are a set of links provided by Groundspeak. These assist cachers finding useful information. One of these provides a list of local Hotels, all of which are commercial organisations and I suspect none of them pay Groundspeak for the privilege. Is this correct? Do Groundspeak get no payback from them? How about Groundspeak implementing a similar link listing local pubs? This would solve the vexed issue of cache owners daring to mention names. If necessary a bit of code could be inserted limiting the link to UK based caches. An alternative, if this is unacceptable, is for cachers to use Groundspeak's own Waymarking site and adding the local pub as a Waymark. This seems to be allowed so then clicking on "Find all nearby Waymarks" would have the desired result in a totally avveptable fashion. An example can be seen here... Thoughts?
  2. Interesting comments on several fronts. Sure I made the right decision 'in the distant past'.
  3. Have a look at http://giffgaff.com/ It piggybacks onto the O2 network. I've used one for a while for mobile internet on various devices and "it does what it says on the tin". I would question one thing that has been said (no offence taken or intended!!) I have found 3 to give very good coverage and is one of the best in terms of data cost. I don't know about Scotland though, maybe other providers are better up there.
  4. In my time as a reviewer I was presented with all sorts of containers (including fake dog turds!). I soon discovered that recycled chinese takeaway boxes, cardboard pringles tubes, ice cream tubs and, yes, plastic bags almost invariably proved unsuitable as cache containers. They yended to either disintegrate or fill with water soon after placement. So my test as a reviewer was whether the container presented was likely to be long lasting given its location. If a plastic bag was the only container but it was hidden in somewhere away from the elements so it would not suffer from inclement weather and was sufficiently sturdy to withstand several months of opening and closing then fine, it would get published. I have to tell you that not many passed this "test".
  5. That's what I was alluding to John. How many are there these days?
  6. At one time a cache container had to be considered weatherproof and reasonably long lasting as well as being suitable for its location. Some erstwhile reviewers would certainly have questioned whether a plastic bag fitted those criteria before publishing the cache. Maybe it's different these days, I don't know.
  7. Dave don't lose your sense of proportion! When we were part of the same reviewing team we took pride in applying common sense. It was the very fact that we eventually were not allowed to use common sense that led to what happened. Do not take umbrage when someone politely and gently suggests it could be applied here as an insult! Peter
  8. Well done on accepting your nomination. I hope you have an enjoyable and rewarding time. (yes honestly!) Quite a change these days I see!!!! lol
  9. Ah Charity, I see it is still causing "interest" here I hope you have found an acceptable way of achieving your aim.
  10. Well well well! At a loose end this morning and thought I would pop in here to see what was happening these days. It's been a while I see little has chagend (apart from the look of the forums). Acvtually that's not quite correct, the old craziness seems to have got worse. How can this cache possibly cause the sky to fall in and be responsible for the end of the geocaching world as we know it? The OP was trying to do something that was always a prime reason for geocaching - taking someone to an unexpected and interesting location. To interpret a current film location as "commercial" ............... sigh!! When I was reviewing not only would I happily publish the cache but I would probably have sent the CO a note congratulating them on finding such an interesting spot. If this is how Groundspeak caches are being restricted these days I'm glad we have an alternative listing option available. As I said .......... sigh!!
  11. Wow, about as incorrect a statement as you could make. I rarely if ever come here these days but someone pointed this thread out to me. Seeing Greg's reply I have to use his own his own words to say his "statement is about as incorrect as it could be" The original observation could be seen by many who are not associated with Groundspeak as a perfectly accurate summary of the situation a while back. However, as has been pointed out many times, this is Groundspeak's forum (and listing site) and they can impose whatever rules they want to. If you want to play here you abide by their rules, if not, you do as I have now done and go elsewhere (in my case OpencachingUK). The only last comment I would make is I find it interesting that new users still question that philosophy. I'll get me coat now...........
  12. Wendy, I don't participate in this forum these days but someone mentioned your sad news so I felt I had to say how sorry I am for your loss. I remember the first time I met you and Ceasar hunting for a cache around the Barbican and how struck I was at his placid, almost aloof, nature. We met several times since then and each time he seemed so aware of whatever you needed, possibly even before you realised it yourself. Although I've had Sam for around 6 years now and have grown so attached to him I can't begin to realise how you must be feeling now. Just take some solace from the times you and Ceasar had together and from the obvious affection he was held in by all your geocaching friends. As for that picture of him in the snow - treasure it, such a wonderful way to remember him. Peter
  13. This is being discussed here. My offer still stands.
  14. Doing a quick "Whois" I found this: It seems you found the website only 2 days after it was registered and before the search engines picked it up. I notice it's registered in Scandinavia. I also notice all your caching has been done in Sweeden so welcome to the UK forum and maybe you'll have the pleasure of doing some caching here now.
  15. To be fair, the helpful advice was laced with put-downs of an "RTFM" nature, questioning whether the thread should have been started in the first place. A fair enough response, imo. To be sure I re-read what I posted. I quote: Could you please point out the put-downs there? As for "RTFM", the OP had intimated that he'd (she'd?) spent time persuing the forum, I shared the results of a quick search I made. I thought I was helping a new contributor, obviously I shouldn't have bothered.
  16. Charmed I'm sure. A little bit of what was intended to be helpful advice leads to immediate dollops of sarcasm. Nice.
  17. Very true and discussion is the whole point of this area. However there's no need to peruse the whole forum as entering "bin liner" into the search box brings up a lot of relevant threads including this one which I just bumped for convenience.
  18. How about an alternative approach? Try using containers that by themselves are weatherproof so that manky bin bags are unnecessary.
  19. and if you can bring one for me I'll certainly be there!
  20. It's a thought! I'd need to check on rail fares from deepest Herefordshire and the cost of a hotel room for the night but cheap options are always available. Hmm!
  21. A perfectly reasonble question and if the answer to both is yes the whole process becomes voluntary and all objections should disappear.
  22. Does anyone know if it's possible to decline the gift if someone sends it?
  23. When I was involved in developing this "extra" search facility I certainly NEVER anticipated it would prevent a whole UK search from being carried out. Indeed, to implement it when only a small minority of UK caches have the region added seems to me to be madness.
