  1. Thanks, you guys are correct. Seems like my GPSMAP 60 cx has lost the ability to commumnicate with a micro sd card. Card is good. Unit is bad. Another unit ordered.
  2. My trusty old GPSMAP60CX no longer shows the full compliments of "find categories" All that shows are: 1. Waypoints 2. Geocaches 3. Cities 4. Exits 5. Marine 6. Recent Finds All the other categories are missing (food, shopping, addresses, fuel, etc). I've done a hard reset/used Web Updater and the categories are still missing. Has anyone experienced this before and know a solution. I'm leaving for the Trans Labrador Highway in 2 weeks and need these functions. Smiles, E3
  3. How does a new businees go about getting added to the Garmin POI data base? Does Garmin, Magellan, Tom Tom, etc. get their POI database info from the same source?
  4. My oh my! Lots and lots of pontification, but that happens a lot on forums. Gives people something to do. Thanks to those who responded to the actual question. Cardinal Red, the results of your test are encouraging. I wish I had thought of that. Thanks much.
  5. Briansnat, Thanks, I agree now that I see the category. Would you please move this message as I don't want the question in two separate places. thanks, E3
  6. I no longer log smiley faces. Instead, I post a note to the owner and let them know I found the cache and thank them for placing it. In order to not get these finds on subsequent pocket quieries, I use the ignore function for each find. My question is simple. Is there a limit to the number of caches that can be on an ignore list?
  7. City Select V 5. I also have the full US Topo series. However, I will wait to see what happens before I ask about Topo.
  8. Sorry, its Mapsource City Select Ver 6.11.6. I did get a response from Garmin " If you give me the serial number and unit Id for the 60 I think I can regenerate the unlock code.". Since I want the 60CX, guess I'll give it a try.
  9. I have sent my question to Garmin but wanted to see if anyone else has dealt with this. I have version 6.11.6 of Mapsource. The software has been unlocked for a GPS V and a Legend. I want to replace the Legend with a 60CX. However, Mapsource will only allow you to unlock the software for 2 units. Has anyone ever replaced one of the unlocked units with another. or am I SOL? Smiles, E3
  10. My basic question is will a Garmin GPS V work with 2007 S&T. GPS V uses NMEA 0183. S&T requires NMEA 2.0 or higher. I do use Majic Technology to convert one of my USB ports to emulate a serial port. Also, I assume 0183 is 1.83 and NMEA 2000 is 2.0. Can anyone help?
  11. Great feedback!! I have GSAK and Streets and Trips so will try both methods.
  12. I travel quite a bit to unfamiliar territory. When visiting a different city, I download a hundred or so local caches (both to my GPSr and Palm). With the price of gas being what it is, I try to make a route that approaches all the caches in the least amount of distance driven. Currently, I am doing this manually using MapSource and North American Cities (Ver 5). Is there software available where I can load all the Waypoints and the software will compute a "less distance " route?
  13. A lot of cachers think high numbers validate them in some way. The intent of geocaching becomes secondary to "getting the numbers". It has gotten so bad in my area that some folks attend events with binders filled with pages of caches they have never searched for. While at the event, they seek out previous finders to get "hints" or "lifelines" on the cache. One of my friends went to GWS last year and said folks were having their names logged on caches where they had never even gotten within 500ft of the cache. Like someone mentioned earlier, I would opt to have my # of caches invisable to everyone but myself. For those who wish to play King of the Hill, let them opt to have their numbers on public view.
  14. Tires, easy chairs, car bumpers, and doors!!!! These were a few of the things that the Colorado Association of Cache Hunter Enthusists (C.A.C.H.E.) cleaned up from three Denver reservoirs today. Check out GCT9K3 for more photos.
  15. The original poster brought up an interesting point. I happen to be addicted to finding and hiding difficult caches (not puzzles, I do well to solve a 2 puzzle). One of my hides (GCR8VR) has not been found often but many have searched. Of course many more have searched than have logged DNF's. Its amazing how much private email I have received on this cache. Much of it has asked for hints while some of it has been filled with vitriolic comments about the hide being too difficult to find. Yet others have posted very positive comments and seem to enjoy the challenge. Since I was offering a slightly used (about 30 minutes) handheld TV for the FTF, I didn't think it would be fair to offer hints until it had been found by someone. IMHO a person who searches with a hint should never claim FTF. They have an unfair advantage. I will continue to hunt and hide challenging hides. As far as providing hints, I learned a new tactic from Leprechauns' post. From now on, I shall offer a clue only to those who have posted a DNF first. For those that don't post a DNF because of perceived ego issues, no hint. Happy Hunting
  16. I suggest "Natural Rock Arches" as a category. While the majority of arches tend to be in the west, there are natural rock arches in every state. Most people tend to think of large arches, however, many natural rock arches are only inches high. These are more difficult to find and waymark, but the rewards are greater.
  17. Currently have Garmin GPS V. Happy with the unit except for the seriel interface that takes 4-5 hours to download 19MB of maps. Looking for a unit with the following capabilities. 1. At least 50MB internal storage 2. SD card capability 3. Powered by AA batteries 4 USB interface. 5. Can store at least 1000 WP 6. Can store POI 7. Can store 14 digit WP name as well as 6 digit WP. Color is unimportant. Would prefer Garmin as I already have Mapsource City and topo for the U.S. I looked on Garmin's web site and seems they are increasing internal storage but eliminating SD card capability.
  18. Thanks, Looks like rocketman has laid out exactly what I need. E3
  19. Traveling to Alaska in 12 days. Will be driving Interstate 5, Hwy 97, 16, 37, 2, etc. Would like to do caching while on the trip. I can identify (a tedious process) caches along the way and save them as benchmarks. Benchmarks can be saved as .loc files but don't see a way to save them as .gpx files. Is there an easy way to capture the caches along the way and save them to a GPX file for my palm? I do have GSAK but find using the arch/poly function of a filter to "map" caches along roads to be exceedingly tedious.
  20. As a huge fan of Mom and Pop hides, I was sad/angry that some mentally/emotionally deficient person(s) did this. However, to those who hunted Mom and Pop hides, at least their hides took us to new levels in geocaching. Hunting their caches was not about numbers or smilie faces. It was about quality. I think we all have funny stories about puzzlement, frustration and finally the elation of victory about their hides. I spent about 6 hours hunting for "Just Because" only to finally find it by accident. "Just Retired" showed me that a cache can be funny. However, my personal favorite was "The Plunge" . I still believe in good and evil. To create is good (Mom and POP), to distroy is evil ( the mugglers). Thanks Mom and Pop. You expanded the possibilities of geocaching for me as well as many others.
  21. M.G. Answered you email. Monday is a go for me. I sent my cell number. Zoltig, I am off to Utah on Tuesday 22nd. Will be there 6-7 days. You expressed interest in hunting "Outta Da Park" with me. A friend of mine is going to meet me in The Glade Park area on Friday evening and we will hike in Saturday and will hike out Saturday or Sunday depending on conditions. If we hike back out Sunday, there will still be enough time for you to get back to DVR Sunday PM. Let me know if this works in your schedule. If you go, I hope you bring Jessie. Jessie is such a neat dog.
  22. As long as I have at least 24 hours notice, I can meet and take you to some local caches. I see from your profile, you seem to be an outdoor person as am I. There are some open space parks that have several caches you could pick up.
  23. Z- I will probably spend 6 or 7 days in Utah wandering the backroads and picking up caches in the back country. If you can take that amount of time, that's good. However, if your time is more limited, we can check out "Outa Da Park" first. Just depends on your schedule. Part of the timing will depend on MG's visit. However, we could go before that or after. As long as I am back in town by 28 March. That is my wife's spring vacation. E3
  24. Hemlock, I assume a Sock Puppet is an alter ego. Is that correct? Zoltig, What is your schedule for mid March - mid April? I have that North Rim thing at the end of April and would like to check out this cache prior to that.
