  1. I would agree with this normally but in this case Sladonians could not contact the owner as, unfortunately, he had died. Had I been his son and some of the tactics suggested in this thread been tried I would not have been very happy. I know it can be annoying if a coin or TB goes missing but if a polite email or two goes unanswered just forget about it. Most turn up eventually and if it doesn't, just remember this thread and think how lucky you are to have only lost a TB! My condolences to the Sladonian family and if the son and daughter do carry on with their fathers account I hope they do not find this thread.
  2. I agree if you are after large areas of detailed mapping but for what I will use it for it is perfect. I am only mapping the immediate area around caches where a more detailed map will be of use. I don't need complete coverage on the GPS as I have MM on PDA but this will mean I do not have to fire that up to find footpaths etc. The benefit from how I will use this is obvious from these screen shots and I will see tomorrow how it works in the field.
  3. Yes. Best not to if you're not sure about it. I've never had a problem.........yet!
  4. The newest Beta release for the Colorado supports Garmin Custom Maps and although a little long winded at first, it's easy enough to have whatever maps you want for an area on screen. I've uploaded a few so far and they seem to work without any problem and I'm looking forward to using OS maps on my next caching trip.
  5. Do you have the latest software on the unit. The latest version is 3 and incorporates the previous 4 Beta releases into one official release. One of the Beta releases did address "Power on reliability" so with any luck all you need do is update your software. Information here
  6. "Marking online".......If I got less than grade 3 more than once would I have to do detention?
  7. I archive the track in my Colorado, download to computer then open the GPX file in Google Earth.
  8. I checked my virtual finds and found one couch potato log from 2006. I promptly deleted it to get the warm and fuzzy glow then realised that all my landmark cache finds are now out by 1! Ho Hum
  9. The farmers round here are very good and clear up after their horses and cows. I just wish they would take it home with them......it look terrible just thrown in the edge of the fields.
  10. I read that log on your cache and initially thought it a bit sharp, but, reading some of his other logs I think he just doesn't go in for long logs. He just says it as it is. I had one of his logs on one of my caches and to be honest it made me smile. I wouldn't say he was spineless, just that he calls a spade a spade. He is quite new to the game as well so it wasn't a case of an old hand criticising a new hider and while I don't know him personally I would guess he is just as succinct in everyday life.
  11. It might be worth while physically checking the cache as ammo cans have a habit of going missing. I have lost one which was very well hidden and I know that because I was the last person to visit it before it went! It is also possible that it has been looked for but no DNF logs have been posted (not everyone is happy to post them). A quick check and a note on the cache page will hopefully get things moving again.
  12. I'll give that a try. The ticks round here love real ale!!
  13. When you down for the curry/camping event at Princetown you could do worse than visiting N50 29.179° W003 59.721° It is a prehistoric settlement and I have rarely failed to see adders basking there on a sunny day. As early as possible after the sun gets up is the best time before they get too warm and active and slither away as you approach. There are no caches around the settlement but there are several in the general area.
  14. All will be revealed A cache we did recently where we were the odd ones out on the beach by having clothes on!
  15. The Yellow Dog Endurance Trial (GC1RF6A) falls in the "around Torquay" bit and the owner asks not to leave TB's but it is a great cache and well worth the effort if you have the time. Another good one if you're down that area is Batteries not included (GC1HMZD), a small cache but you could get a small TB or coin in.
  16. Thanks for all the replies, I have been out today on a 12 mile walk and found 14 caches with it. I have established that the accuracy problem is only when the unit is stationary because I had no problem navigating to todays caches and found them all where the Colorado initially pointed to. The problem starts once it is no longer moving because I placed it on the ground at each cache and watched the reading bounce around all over the place. ( I have tried it vertical when setting caches but it makes no difference). It is just like a hyper child, OK when moving but can't stand still when you stop! I haven't seen a Route Finding, On/Off, option on the Colorado but in the Routing options on the Geocaching profile I have the Guidance Method set to Off Road. I use rechargeable NiMH batteries but will try a set of Alkalines at the weekend to see if that makes a difference. I do have it set for NiMH at the moment but will change to Alkaline when I change to them. Thanks again for the replies, it has been helpful if only to confirm that my Colorado is sick
  17. Worth checking, but yes it is set up correctly. I think the calibration is only for altitude and the compass. I have only calibrated the altitude once but I do the compass quite often as I do use that feature. I did have the GPS on the cache I was setting up for quite a few minutes before I took the readings and when I did a goto at the cache site it said 2-3ft. When I walked a few hundred feet away and navigated back I was anything upto 50ft out. After 8 goes of that I got fed up and brought out the old faithful. I don't find it a problem for finding caches, it counts down nicely and when we get within 20ft or so of the cache we can usually spot a likely hiding place, it is just the accuracy for setting a cache that I have a problem with.
  18. I've had my Colorado 300 for 6 months now and am still very pleased with its geocaching functions but am starting to get annoyed with its inaccuracy. I have passed the making excuses for it stage, while I was trying to justify its cost, and am now finding I am using my old GPS12 Map more and more. A recent cache I set was a two stage multi and it was impossible to get a set of coordinates which I could go back to again with the Colorado. I gave up trying in the end and used the GPS12 and got an accurate set of coordinates within minutes. The final site is close to a large identifying feature and on Google earth the cache is right where it should be but out of eight readings taken from the Colorado, the closest it got was 24ft away! The location was high on a hill on Dartmoor with a clear view of the sky all round. I also find that it loses signal under trees too often and even in the open I get several spikes on the tracklog where it has lost signal. My old GPS12 was carried in my pocket and very rarely lost signal even in dense woodland. Does everyone else s Colorado behave the same or do I have a bad 'un. I have the latest software(2.9) and GPS software(2.8) loaded and I keep WAAS turned on all the time. If no-one else has this problem I will contact Garmin support and see if they can sort it out. Thanks.
  19. I use a pair of ordinary tweezers to grab the cord inside the ferrule thingy and then either undo the knot or cut it off. You already have the needle so it is quite a simple job of replacing the broken poles.
  20. I haven't done any of the power trails but would be more inclined to do them than drive around in the car all day picking up the same amount of drive by micro/nano caches. From the ones I have looked at, they follow a circular route of up to 6 miles in open countryside so look quite appealing to me. I would look on the fact there were a number of micro caches on route to be a bonus to the walk so if the owner could keep them all maintained and in good condition I can't see any problem at all.
  21. ASAIK you can delete but you cannot edit any logs which give the game away. Even if you do make it clear in your description, expect some entertaining emails once you start deleting.
  22. Hi Ben, If you are a complete novice at map reading you could have a look at this page which is very easy to understand for beginners. If you are just looking for information to pass your map reading test then I would think you will find what you need there. You can get 6 figure grid references from the map you have as long as you have a scale but you could do it just as easily with a ruler. Even if you are just doing road map reading, 6 figure grids will be useful for junctions etc. Good luck with your test.
  23. I find this a very selfish attitude, it is ok for those who are fit but it would be nice if the less able were still able to enjoy the joys of the remote areas of North Dartmoor. The road is to remain there for the army so why not let others use it. Lets face it, were not talking about a stream of traffic just the occasional vehicle. It may be a selfish attitude but it's mine I tell you.....mine, all mine.
  24. Hello Margaret, Sorry, but I won't be signing the petition, I think it's closure is the best thing for the North Moor. Walkers will still be able to access OP15, it's the drivers who will be kept out I guess visitors to Cranmere will take a dive but it's good that it will get back to being a major achievement to reach the pool and not the drive in the park it is now.
