  1. I just want to mention, after last website update, I still only have indirect access to gc.com via apps and GSAK. After 3rd page of annoying CAPTCHA question I gave up accessing the website. You may have some reasons for implenting this feature, but this way has, in my opinion, failed completly.

    Ciao,
    Marmotte

  2. Hm, I don't think that is only Deutsche Telekom, my ISP is Telefoncia (O2) it is also so slow, and it is no fun exploring gc.com websites for new caching adventures.

    Here is an actual traceroute, ecanderson's results are an unreachable dream here.

  3. Hi,

    here also, response times are incredible slow! Calling www.geocaching.com takes 60sec's until sandglass disappears. In other words, it is currently more or less unusable.

    Location is Hamburg/Germany; ISP: Hansenet; O2; telefoncica; Alice. (sorry, this company changes it's name every few years)

    For the network guys, probably this traceroute may help

  4. Dear Groundspeak,

    after the last change I'm unable to receive PQs via mail. Is thery any chance to get the old pq-mailing back? Since I have a 2nd Premium Account only used to receiving PQ mails, it makes no longer sense to pay for it. Is there any chance to get the money back?

    Regards

  6. Those listings should be reported (either here, to your local reviewer, or to contact@geocaching.com) so that we can manually fix them.

    Thank you for the update. Here I had a look in my local DB, and found 52 entries (LongDesc LIKE '%data:image%'), sorted descending by last date

  7. Don't know the solution to the email issue (maybe it's an issue with the PQ name. I believe there are/were some threads about PQ names causing issues), but if the Pocket Queries were generated, then you should be able to download them from the "Pocket Queries available for Download" regardless of whether or not you have received the emails.

    Thanks for your answer. That was bringing the right idea of this issue to me. It seems, these PQs containg only the download link, instead of the *.zip attatchment. Oh sh**! This is really a pity, I have a process here, which receives and extracts PQs and Status Notifications from mailbox, and copies them directly into the database of my favored NAV-Software (TTQV) in background.

    So the current problem and question is, how to setup PQs to get them as mail attachments again?

    Regards,

    Marmotte

  8. Hi,

    since a couple of days, I miss most of my PQs. They never reached my mail-box. Because, I'm the domain owner, there is of course no problem with spam filters etc. Target Mail-address is only be used for PQs and GC-Notifications.

    Ok, here is an actuell example, PQs are marked as scheduled, but I didn't find this in my mailbox:

    not received scheduled (PST)

    Pocket Query (1000) DE2010-05.24-05.26 ---> 07/03/2010 01:43:57

    Pocket Query (1000) DE2010-05.27-05.30 ---> 07/03/2010 01:43:50

    Pocket Query (1000) DE2010.05.31-06.04 ---> 07/03/2010 01:43:42

    Received

    Pocket Query (1000) Woche Neue NDS ---> 07/03/2010 01:31:21

    Pocket Query (1000) Woche Neue SH ---> 07/03/2010 01:46:40

    A major difference between PQ options received/not received is, not received PQs have option 'run once delete' checked. Is this a known bug, or are there other reasons that have to be analysed in depth?

    Regards

    Marmotte

  9.

    We're definitely focused on making it "just work" but there are plenty of flavors of devices that need to be tested to make sure the application is solid.

    Jeremy, is there a chance to get a software version with an manual GPS setup option? Thinking, you than will get more feedback about settings on problem units.

    On my FSC Loox N520, I use PathAway GPS software, and it will also hang up, using the autodetect option of this software. With Pathaway, I finally got it run using the "Windows Mobile GPS" protocol.

    Just my 2 ct's

  10. What about the caches that are updated and/or added during the week.

    The PQ "Updated within last 7-Day" option doesn't really satisfy me, because every cache log resets the last date of update. In result, my daily queries have too much non interesting updates (cache-logs), and these 500 caches covering only a small area.

    I don't use GSAK, I have my own process, retrieving PQ from mailbox, check for updates, and store the cache waypoints in database of my favorite navigation software TTQV in an automated process. Today only 15 of 500 caches have relevant updates in their cache descriptions. In my opinion, Groundspeak could save a lot of traffic, if they would exclude log updates in their query options.

    I'm not sure what is so difficult about getting the PQ's the day before you go out, updating your GSAK and going about your hunt.

    Not difficult, but boring by doing the same stupid clicks every day. I prefer the way define once, run daily. Computers costs a lot of money, why don't use them :)

  11. Thanks for test.

    Looks fine to me running Windows 2000Professional and using either Firefox/2.0.0.6 or opening it in

    IE 6.0.2800

    Hm, made nothing and clicked again, the error text changed from "Security Error" to "Runtime Error". Then I've entered www.geocaching.com, clicked my example again and it works. It seems not all of gc.com changes last week where successful.

    These changes brought often very slow response times - or lets better say delivery times -, Google maps where more informative, by listing waypoint names, and of course daily error messages like above.

    In my opinion, I would be more happy if Jeremy would fallback to last running configuration. :P

  12. Hi,

    got a new error mesg accessing gc.com. Reproduceble in that way:

    http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCYYCP

    Using OS Win XP SP2; IE 6.0.2900.2180

    Errortext:

    Server Error in '/' Application.
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Security Exception
    Description: The application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy. To grant this application the required permission please contact your system administrator or change the application's trust level in the configuration file.

    Exception Details: System.Security.SecurityException: Requested registry access is not allowed.

    Source Error:

    The source code that generated this unhandled exception can only be shown when compiled in debug mode. To enable this, please follow one of the below steps, then request the URL:

    1. Add a "Debug=true" directive at the top of the file that generated the error. Example:

     <%@ Page Language="C#" Debug="true" %>

    or:

    2) Add the following section to the configuration file of your application:

    <configuration>
      <system.web>
       <compilation debug="true"/>
      </system.web>
    </configuration>

    Note that this second technique will cause all files within a given application to be compiled in debug mode. The first technique will cause only that particular file to be compiled in debug mode.

    Important: Running applications in debug mode does incur a memory/performance overhead. You should make sure that an application has debugging disabled before deploying into production scenario.

  13. If the owner went to the trouble of posting a spoiler picture, why could he not have corrected the coordinates?

    I would focus my disappointment towards a cache owner who needs to fix his cache page, rather than the website's present limitations in regard to downloading photos.  I thought Lil Devil's post was right on point.

    Hi,

    look here for a small sample: The german text decribes a story of a strange map, probably orginated from an ancient Aliens.

    http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?wp=GCJ3YH

    When offline, all you need is a complete description and a Garmin Topo Map or a paper map.

    This the way of geocaching I love, I really won't miss caches like this. Search for some pictures within the logs to see what I mean.

  14. Hi again,

    a discussion in a foreign language is sometimes not so easy, I am sorry for that! Probably "demand" maybe a better word instead of "needs".

    Again, my intension was to push the discussion from "how to ban geocachers from gc.com" in another direction, like "what are the reasons and what can be improved to fit their needs"

    Personally I don't need rankings and interactive maps, but it seems a lot of other peoples are interested. Personally I would be happy having complete PQs (with images) on my Notebooks harddisk!

    A lot of cache-owners here using pictures instead of Hints. I won't skip them all.

    I've found over 2,000 caches with just a PDA. If I run across one that can't be found because some important info is missing from the PDA, I skip it. So what? There are plenty of others to find. ;)

    Seems to be nice to go caching in the U.S. ;) If I had your found-score, the area around my home (Hamburg) in a radius of 200km would be empty, and we pay aprx. $1.30 per litre Diesel... :mad:

    Ciao

    Andreas

  15. That is one benefit, but it has also been designed to combat the increased scraping abuse that we've had on the web site.

    If it´s only to prevent abuse then it´s fine, but unfortunately now the interactive maps from geocaching.de are gone as well. I hope you don´t count interactive maps of other local communities as an abuse !

    Beardieteam

    If a regional site is obtaining the data with Groundspeak's permission, then I would think Groundspeak would provide an alternate solution, like they have with other sites such as Buxley's.

    Sorry! In my opinion this discussion goes in a wrong direction.

    Instead of discussing, on how Geocachers could be banned from GC.COM, we better should talk about reasons of some unwanted activities.

    Here are a few samples:

    1. Becoming PM without owing a credit-card it's like 5 star rated mystery. (Btw. in Germany credit-cards are very often not welcome - we use other cards!)

    2. When mailing the problem to contact@Groundspeak.com, no answer received.

    3. Needs of Interactive Maps.

    4. Needs of Ranking - Sites.

    5. Next problem is, how to get cache-decriptions completly easily downto local hard-disk and/or PDA. The results of those PQ's are not really a solution, because of missing spoiler pictures and so on. In my opinion, this is the most important reason for the existence of all the spider-programs in the web. What do you think about this idea:

    - Generate PQs (GPX) optional as [x] WP-Lists only with (external) links, [x] add descriptions in .html with [x] pictures to zip-file including ../Local_GCxxxx.html -links. Mail it, or put this in an FTP-Userspace.

    6. Or in otherwords, how would you like to prepare geocache-descriptions for a 3 week trip with a mobile home cross the country?

    Just my 2 ct's

    ;)

    Andreas
