This would be to the next waypoint on the track. When you configure one of your data fields to display "Distance To Next", you are instead seeing "Distance To Destination"? Nope, I am using "Distance To Next". When I display the next track point it shows "End". So using BaseCamp and the Dakota a track has a beginning and and end and nothing in between...

One big difference between Garmin Dakota and my old Legend HCx is that the Legend gives me time to next waypoint, since it navigates a track from waypoint to waypoint. This morning I finally figured out why the Dakota doesn't do this. It sees the entire track as one line between "Begin" and "End". When it shows "Waypoint at Next" it shows "Begin" before you reach start of track and "End" before you reach end of track. Nothing in between. I am hoping there is a way in BaseCamp to influence this. Pretty annoying track implementation...!

I'm planning to upgrade from my Garmin Legend HCx to the eTrex 30. One thing I like about the Legend is that it beeps when you approach a track waypoint. How does track navigation work on an eTrex 30? Will it beep if you get close to a track waypoint? On the Legend it works as follows: - Select track - Select "Tracback" - Select the point Now it will follow the track and the dashboard will show you how far from next track waypoint. It will beep when you get close to one. Could anyone who owns an eTrex 30 walk me through track navigation on that unit? Thanks!

I have just purchased a Dakota 20. During my first 4.5mi hike the unit crashed about 6 times (screen goes black -- have to power up). I have a 4GB MicroSD installed with Northwest Topos on it and a bunch of other maps that were not active. The crashes seemed to occur when zooming in and out and while I was walking. When I try to repro this at home, I have no luck doing so. Also when I was configuring the unit I had no issues. Before I return the unit to the seller, could this be caused by the MicroSD or Map, or something else? Thanks!

Sounds great. I love the eTrex Legend but miss the compass quite a bit, so wanted to upgrade. Seeme eTrex 30 is a good upgrade.

When I hike I rely on the proximity alerts quite a bit. My eTrex Legend HCx gives me alerts close to track waypoints when I navigate/tracback a track (not a route). Does the eTrex 30 give proximity alerts on track waypoints? Thanks!!! P.s. Purchased a Dakota 20 and does not seem to do it. Unit is defective so will be returned anyway, and will be looking for an eTrex 30 or GpsMap 62S

My wife has one and would not be very appreciative if I lift it from her car. However I just found an old iPaq in a box and I thought it was dead but I jolted it to life and installed GpxView on it. I never thought this old item would be of any use and I almost threw it out... I think it's going to be of much use now! Oh and I am eyeing a DeLorme PN-40 for the longer term. I cannot unload the Garmin though as I travel to Europe and Asia from time to time where I think a PN-40 is not of much use. But I have to contemplate strongly to own 2 very similar GPS'es. Seems like a waste... And I concluded that geocachers are pretty nice people. Thanks so far for all of the helpful tips!

Yes premium membership helps. Without buying a new paperless capable GPS consider a $25 palm M500 from ebay. You can then use spinner/pucker for free or cachemate for $10. I was considering getting a PN-40 in addition to the HCx but it seems that is a bit wasteful now.

Hi all I am new to geocaching, and found my first 4 last 2 days. It's been a fun start! One thing I noticed is that it is a bit of a hassle to print out the information of the caches (I search only traditional caches). Is there a better way to do this, short from buying a GPS that can display that info? (I own a eTrex Legend HCx). Does the paid membership help out here? Do I need that info anyway???? Do you take the cache info with you or skip that step? I could have found the last caches probably without the paperwork but since I am new to this I may just have been lucky. Thanks!
