  1. Thanks Noel, that was easy and painless. Firehall#2 now ff171.
  2. I've been experimenting and yes you can change your username and not lose your finds. Go to your account: http://www.geocaching.com/account/default.aspx Then click on the Edit link in the "Your Profile" box. Here's a direct link: http://www.geocaching.com/account/editprofile.aspx
  3. Can you change your user name but still maintain your present account and not lose all your finds? If so, what is the process?
  4. Where did you guys get the little geocaching symbols attached to the sticks. I do a bit of walking stick carving and would like to make one with the coloured geocaching piece like you have to use as a FTF for when I hide my first cache.
  5. I was adding some new caches into my GPSr around my area and looking at the map, I noticed a cache that I had found showed as not being found yet (the green cache box icon instead of the smiley face found icon). When I found the cache a couple months ago, I had no pen with me so logged it as found and noted the lack of pen for signing the log. How do found caches revert to being unfound? I'm pretty sure it was showing a found smiley face before.

You might do well to check the GPS garage sale section here or a site like Craigslist and pick up a used unit. Get the best GPSr you can find within your target price range if you're getting into caching and also get a premium membership.
  7. All very good and helpful advise. Don't rely on GPSr accuracy so much as intuition and observation. Now if I can only stop feeling so guilty lurking about bushes and public areas.
  8. Being relatively new to geocaching, I've found that finding a geocache isn't as easy as it sounds. It would be a lot simpler if there were large flourescent arrows pointing to the caches but then where would be the fun in that? Most difficult are the caches that don't have a description of what to look for other than the size. What does small mean for instance? Something that will fit into a nostral? I guess what I really want to know from more experienced cachers, how do you find the more difficult and no description caches. Any hints, secrets, methods?
  9. My Garmin map60CSx switches to a dark nightime view on the map screen after sundown. I imagine it knows when sundown is and makes the switch automaticaly but I'd prefer to keep the map page view on the daytime setting. I've gone over the manual a couple times and can't seem to find a way to disable the switching so I need some input from another more experienced Garmin user on how to keep the daytime view. Any information would be appreciated.
  10. I do always write something in the log instead of just TFTC. Just wondering if there was a way to show that I found it without writing anything. Making up a tall tale sounds like a fun thing to do and probably would get a laugh from the CO. I never thought to do that but thanks for the idea.
  11. If I find a cache and try to log it as found, I'm required to leave a note or the system won't let me show the cache as found and it won't show as found by me on the map (smiley face icon). Sometimes I have nothing other than TFTC to say and I doubt this is of any interest to the owner or anyone else. Is there a way to log a cache as found without leaving a note?
  12. We could tell you why if you were a premium member.
  13. I requested and received my first pocket query and with a frustrating amount of reading and cursing managed to get it downloaded to my Garmin map60csx. I saved the file to desktop, right clicked on the file icon and selected "extract all" which produced another file icon on the desktop (unzipped files I'm assuming since I'm almoast computer illiterate). I then dragged the newly created icon into mapsourse and sent it to my device. Now when I go to find a geocache page, it lists the caches as both a GC and the waypoint, same as on the find waypoint page. Example: for geocache GC2DKPJ it show a listing as "GC2DKPJ" and another as "2DKPJ MiTr 1" What I would like to do is have 1 GC listing per cache but have the notes and only the notes I type into the cache page show up under notes (I know 30 characters is the max). Please don't mention GSAK as I don't have a degree in computer programing and code writing. Any other help and suggestions (in plain English) would be appreciated.
  14. How does one know which flavor or for that matter if it's a non-trackable coin? Is there some sort of paperwork that accompanies the coin on it's journey or is that info found on the cache page?
  15. I've been searching the forums trying to find where the rules for geocoins are posted. Could someone direct me to a spot where I can find out about geocoins, what they are, what's teir pupose, where to gt them, what to do with them. I'm sure that information is here somewhere but I can't seem to find it.
  16. I didn't know which forum to pose this question but here it is. I'm getting a new 2G micro sd card with topo Canada maps for my Garmin Map60CSx and was wondering how the caches I have loaded will be affected once I remove the present card and replace it with the new. Are the caches I now have loaded to the card or into internal memory? Will the caches I have loaded now show on the new map? Is there anything I should do before removing the old 512mb card and replacing it with the new 2G card? There is so much info in these forums that the answers are probably there somewhere but my eyes are getting sore from reading so I'm taking the lazy way here.
