  1. We checked on our first cache just this past fall when one of the posts indicated that a rodent of some sort had gnawed away at the container (it's a fake stump I made). We checked on our second cache (and ended up archiving it) when it was reported that a mother duck had taken to building her nest almost on top of the cache box! Our last cache was checked on the first week we hid it. Just nervous, I guess! We plan to do maintenance runs each season for the caches that aren't reported as having any problems. This will also give us a chance to restock the items inside, if needed
  2. Mine disappeared right after it took a big leap toward it's ultimate goal. The geocacher who found it logged it as a find, left a $1 bill and never moved it. It's been MIA for over a month now and despite many emails to this guy, there's been absolutely no response. The group that is expecting this TB is really disappointed. On a brighter note, if I see the Snoopy TB in any of the local caches here, I'll send an email to let you know and then move it along. Wendy
  3. Also, keep in mind that if you are particularly pleased with your homemade TB and would like to see it again, you might think twice about making it a TB. Or, make two, keep one and launch the other. There is always the risk of your homemade one going MIA. I know...happened to me. Come visit us at Bean Acres!
  4. We've found 2 Where's George dollars in two of our caches (had to do maintenance on one cache and archive the other)---both left by Moun10bike and after logging them on the Where's George website, we got them back into circulation immediately. It's a fun thing, I think. But, where can I get a www.wheresgeorge.com stamp? They don't sell them anymore! Wendy
  5. I made up some of these cards and we leave one in each log book, along with our entry. They are left for the owner of the cache (not as a trade item)so that they can have something besides a logbook when they decide to archive their cache for good. Our card changes from time to time, but we always leave one in the logbook.
  6. Yes yes and yes! Count us in. When do you think they'll be ready? We have one of Dutchboy's wife's patches on our backpack and it's great!

  8. We went from Washington to Las Vegas last month (SeaTac Int'l Airport to McCarron) and had our GPS with us in my carryon. It went through two security checks (one was a person and one was the automated Xray machine) and it passed just fine. Problem was that once we were seated and ready to fly (we were on Alaska Airlines) all passengers were told that GPS units were not permitted to be used during the flight. Darn. I was hoping to try it out way up there!
  9. We learned about geocaching on the Pop-Up Times message boards, from a fellow-camper!
  10. I hope Jeremy adds it soon. The MIA issue has become rather large and we need a way to have better control over it before everyone stops putting TBs out there altogether.

    MIA Travel Bugs

I suggested a forum for MIA bugs to Jeremy recently, having become a victim of this very problem. In my case, I know who took the bug and despite many inquiries (none of them being threatening to that cacher) I've had no response and it's coming on 8 weeks that the TB has been MIA. I think it's gone forever and this really hacks me off since the cacher in question perports himself to be 'experienced' and is showing others 'how' to geocache. So I'd like to have a feature that would also capture the cacher's handle if known. Maybe that would spur them on to do the right thing or not pick them up. Just MHO. Wend
  12. We have taken Beanie, our non-fierce- chicken-of-a-pom on all but two cache-hunts that we've been on. She enjoys the walks so much and although she's fairly chicken around other dogs and she hasn't sniffed out a cache box yet, she loves to follow her people into the brush looking for it! So, to give her some honor in this world (because little chicken dogs rarely get any respect!) we created a doggie-themed cache: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=17734
  13. Count us in with those who've had a TB go MIA. (http://www.geocaching.com/track/track_detail.asp?ID=3331) We tried, via gently inquiring emails, to contact the person who retrieved The Mini Pod (they added a post to the cache that they took it but then never logged it out of the cache) and another geocacher who was involved with it's travels also emailed the retriever...all to no avail. Not even a response that would say if they had it but just didn't have a chance to move it along yet, which seems to me to be the minimum courtesy expected. I like the idea of the laminated card. We'd included directions/information inside a zip-lock-baggy with The Mini Pod when we turned it loose, figuring that was all it would need. Guess not. We're keeping our fingers crossed that it'll turn up soon and continue it's travels and any/all future bugs of ours will most definitely have that card attached. Thanks for sharing the idea with the rest of us!
  14. CaptainLeno, your stump idea inspired me to create a stump of our own for the first cache we ever hid and it's enjoyed a LOT of success! Stumpy (as we refer to it) has had it's picture taken with lots of the folks who found it everyone has enjoyed being surprised when they figured out what it was. Only ran into one problem and that was either something that gnawed on the foam or someone accidentally stepped on it and we had to take it in for some repair work a little while back. All things rectified, Stumpy is back in action! Thank you for such a creative idea....hope you come up with more! Wendy & Darrell The Beans (see our cache, Stumpy's Wildwood Stash, for photos of Stumpy
  15. If you have a graphics program, import the photo there and resize it. With my program, I resize it to 500 pixels by 395 pixels and it works like a charm.

  17. I think the term "tupperware" is also used as loosely as the term "kleenex." When you say kleenex you generally mean tissue (of whatever brand) and when folks say tupperware they generally mean any of the plastic storage containers w/tight fitting lids. Same thing goes for "band-aid" or "q-tip" or "jello."

  19. Beautiful, beautiful quilt! Jeremy, you've got a lot of fans, both here at home in the PNW and all around the world....thank you for all you've done for us and for the sport! Wendy & Darrell
  20. I think that cache degeneration happens whether you want it to or not and that's where maintenance comes in. If it's important to you to have a wider selection of things then by all means, stock it up and keep an eye on the contents! I can say, on our very first geocache hunt, that we were fortunate to find a cache that had a wide array of items. We were impressed with the thought put into the theme of the cache and we didn't know at that time that there are some people who will leave nothing but garbage behind. We learned that one the hard way with our first hidden cache----retrieved it for some mainentance and repair and found bottle caps inside.
  21. You'd know us because our license plate (not the frame...the plate itself) says: GEOCSHR oh...and the GPS stand on the dash...and the Washington Geocaching sticker on the front window...

  23. It depends on the size of the cache. They can contain a lot or a little. The two rules that we stick to when creating and hiding caches are: 1) they go out into the world, from our hands, with good stuff in them---no junk; 2) that the cache we create is signifcant or different in some way.
