Got the email from GPSonSale, it'll be here on Tuesday!
Upgrading from the eTrex Legend (blue), not that there was anything wrong with it, I'm just looking forward to seeing what the 60Cx can do.

Hello, I'm very new to this and very excited to get started. It seems like geocaching is something my wife and I will much enjoy. Here's a question I have for you experts. How do I enter a waypoint from scratch into my gps? i.e. one cache I'm wanting to look for is N 38° 26.349 W 105° 13.949.
When I enter this do I input 38.26; or 26.329; or 38.26349?
I'm looking for answers on these sites but haven't found them yet.

I'm thinking about upgrading from my Etrex Legend (blue) to a GPSMAP60Cx. Nothing wrong with the Legend, but I want to upgrade. GPSonSALE seems to have the best price, anyone deal with them before? Any problems or issues?

I think for the most part, temporarily disabling a cache is a flag for other cachers that there may be something wrong with it, such as a wet log book, etc.
It may or may not be worth your while to go looking for it. If the owner just puts in a log that a part is missing or something else is wrong, when a cacher scans through the listing he may think its okay.
But if its marked disabled, hopefully he'll stop and read as to the reason why and decide if he wants to look for it while in the area. For a wet log, the owner may not be able to get there for several days, but the cache is still there.
If it was a cache that I wanted to log, I'd go for it and in the case of a wet log I might throw a few pages from a tablet I carry.

I have the bean bag mount for my f-150 truck. Never had a problem with it, even on off-road. Ford must have had this mount in mind when they designed the dash.
Hmmmm, looks like that might work great in my Jeep Grand Cherokee!!

The fall hunting season started this past Saturday with the opening of archery season. As well as being a geocacher, I'm also a hunter and we wouldn't want any accidents out there. If your out in the woods Monday-Saturday, remember to where your orange.

I recently had to replace my home computer with a monster laptop. The problem is that the laptop didn't come with a serial port (RS232). My eTrex Legend cable is for a serial port. Anyone ever use a serial-to-usb converter cable and make it work? Any other possible work arounds?

It's the only solution. They work fine.
Our HP home PC does not have a serial port either. Bought the adapter from Wal-Mart (around $20) and no problems or issues.

I use 4 sets (8 batteries) for my Etrex Legend. They are all the Enegizer NiMh 2500mAh type. I also keep one set of alkaline in my pack.

im cuious about some of the 'teams' i see. are these profiles set up as a team? my dad and bro are caching now and we want to make a team for when we are together. do i just make a new profile with all our names on it? are there offical teams or just groups of friends. also it seems most 'teams' have tons of finds. is it for real or does everyones indivudal finds count??
if anyone has any tips......

I believe I know what provoked the OP's comments...37 logs that were exactly the same for every cache, from a quickly found lamp post micro to a tricky climb up a beautiful waterfall.
LOL, yeah I think you got it. Even if I find a "lame" cache, I try and add a log that has a personal touch. Nothing elaborate, just a line or two but it doesn't sound like a cookie cutter response.

I know this is just a personal thing with me, but it rubs me the wrong way to see "Out geocaching today.....blah, blah TFTC" in multiple caches. I guess its the cut & paste thing. Takes something away from reading the logs. I've done multiple caches and when I log them I like to leave a personal touch. I mean, add a little bit of personality to the logs......pleeeeeez

Just a shot in the dark, but are you sure that your etrex is set to the correct datum?
Hi, thanks for replying, Yes I think so... I have set my Position format to hdd-mm.mmm to match the values given on the Cache DataBase and as I am in the UK, datum is set as "Ord Srvy GB".

Your datum should be set to WGS84 for Geocaching, regardless of which country you are in. I tried Ord Srvy GB on my eTrex, and lat/lon became .555/.521 instead of .815/.265. for a benchmark location.
Aaaaah! Interesting.... I will try this and report back. Where are you supposed to find out this kind of information...? From Forums like this I guess.

I have an Etrex Legend that I use mainly for geocaching, with some navigation thrown in. I was using the mount that came with the package deal which included a "permanent" adhesive. Yeah, not so permanent.

My poison ivy story goes back to my days in the USMC.
Somehow I came into contact with poison ivy and got it bad. I mean bad. I had a small patch on the inside of my left upper arm, across the small of my back and down both sides of the crack of my butt. It was terrible.
The funniest part was waiting in the chow line one day this boot 2nd Lt who I didn't like very much saunters up to me and grabs my left arm, saying something like, "what the he^% happened to you?"
I just smiled and said, "poison ivy sir"
The look on his face was magic!My second taste of poison ivy was at home. Somehow I got it on both ankles. Wasn't too bad.
My last time (I hope) with poison ivy I ended up with a basketball sized area on my left hip. I had to take steroids for this one.

The wording and/or meaning of the laws is vague at best.
Take the first one, taken on its face value, you would not be allowed to do anything on the SGL's except hunt or trap. No nature walks, berry picking, bird watching, no bike riding, horse riding, nothing of a personal nature outside hunting or trapping. Thats what the law says. So no Boy Scout/Girl Scout field trips......thats an organizational function, etc. I doubt that is the intended meaning of the law.
Which brings us to the second one, geocache containers as litter. I highly doubt someone could claim discarded beer bottles, soda bottles, old tires, stoves, etc are in the same category as geocache containers which can be traced back to the owner.
There is such a thing as the intent of the law versus the word of the law.

A cacher, bird watcher, mushroom or berry picker who happens by a hunter IS NOT disturbing the hunter. The act must be of deliberate intent to interfere with the hunt.
Title 34
Sec. 2302. Interference with lawful taking of wildlife or other activities permitted by this title prohibited.
(a) General rule. - Except as otherwise provided in this title, it is unlawful for another person at the location where the activity is taking place to intentionally obstruct or interfere with the lawful taking of wildlife or other activities permitted by this title.
(a.1) Activities which violate section. - A person violates this section when he intentionally or knowingly:
(1) drives or disturbs wildlife for the purpose of disrupting the lawful taking of wildlife where another person is engaged in the process of lawfully taking wildlife or other permitted activities;
(2) blocks, impedes or otherwise harasses another person who is engaged in the process of lawfully taking wildlife or other permitted activities;
(3) uses natural or artificial visual, aural, olfactory or physical stimuli to affect wildlife behavior in order to hinder or prevent the lawful taking of wildlife or other permitted activities;
(4) creates or erects barriers with the intent to deny ingress or egress to areas where the lawful taking of wildlife or other permitted activities may occur;
(5) interjects himself into the line of fire;
(6) affects the condition or placement of personal or public property intended for use in the lawful taking of wildlife or other permitted activities in order to impair its usefulness or prevent its use;
(7) enter or remain upon public lands or upon private lands without permission of the owner or their agent, with intent to violate this section; or
(8) fails to obey the order of any officer whose duty it is to enforce any of the laws of this Commonwealth where such officer observes any conduct which violates this section or has reasonable grounds to believe that any person intends to engage in such conduct.
(
Enforcement and recovery of damages. - The commission or any person who is lawfully engaged in the taking, hunting or trapping of game or wildlife who is directly affected by a violation of this section may bring an action to restrain conduct declared unlawful in this section and to recover damages. Exceptions. - The conduct declared unlawful in this section does not include any activities arising from lawful activity by other land uses, including farming, mining, forestry practices, recreation or any other activities when it is evident that such activities are not intended to violate this section.

Just curious....anybody out there that caches on Gamelands ever run into Illegal tree stands?
If you are talking about permanent tree stands, which are illegal, I see old ones that are obviously in disrepair, but nothing new. I do occasionally find temporary stands chained to trees far back off the roads. That saves the owners having to carry them in every day they go hunting.
If they want to claim caches are trash, then so are those tree stands chained to a tree. At least you can't see a cache unless it is uncovered.

I think everyone needs to have respect for others. If I got up at 4:30 am to go out bow hunting and at 9:00am here comes some people there dog ect ect and they start ripping up logs flipping rocks....well needless to say I would be a little upset.
I would not be upset. While "our" hunting dollars paid for the land, they are are open to anyone to use. If I'm hunting and people come by looking for a cache, bird watching, going for a nature walk, or picking mushrooms, so be it.

I received a very disturbing e-mail the other day which I first thought was a practical joke. I have since found out it is not. Apparently a rogue group of disgruntled hunters have banded together and are removing caches on PA Gamelands #57 The following is the e-mail I received. What should be done?
The Gamelanmic Jihad has directed you to remove all your unauthorized chaches from SLG 57 no later than 12:00 Noon Saturday 29 April 2006 or become at risk to be taken hostage.
The infidels known as Big Boulder (CGH8YZ), The Stack (CGH93D, Cool It #1 plus 1-A (CGRZ6W), Cool It #2 (CGV6T8), and Roaring Brook (CG9AA1) are presently being held hostage. Although unharmed their safety is incumbent on the timely removal of these remaining infidels.
If these demands are not met the current hostages and future hostages will meet Allah at the bottom of a dumpster where all this garbage belongs in the first place.
The infidel known as Sorber Views has been given temporary reprieve.
When our demands are met we will contact all owners with instructions to take custody of this property.
This is not a request. Remove your garbage from our gamelands or be subject to our justice.

This guy is a horses rear end. I've been a hunter for many years, and only started geocaching this year. For this guy to claim the SGL's as "ours" (hunters) is arrogant and uncalled for. First, the caches are not garbage and can not be found unless you have a GPS or stumble upon them. Its not like a bright orange ammo box hung froma tree branch. I see far more garbage left behind by hunters than anyone else. I've found some great new hunting areas thanks to geocachers.
If you ask me, this group sounds like a bunch of teenage kids who stumbled upon the geocaching web site and have decided to play games. If they play games, then certain caches will have to be made members only. Let them fork over some money to try and continue their game.

Well, we probably won't be making this get-together. We'll be going down to State College to move the majority of the kids stuff back. We do this every year to avoid a giant headache on the last day, May 5th.
Depending on what time we leave we may be able to stop in for a quick visit.......and some breakfast. If not, I'm sure we'll meet up again.
