  1. Glad I never go through that. Lynne makes a great snack to take with us, cost effective too.
  2. I must admit I am boggled eyed looking at all this. some of the suggested catagories can be found on my mapping software. Garages, resturants, etc are all there with the co-ordinates,so I could in theory log them all without leaving the living room. This has to be sensible to work. Otherwise none of us will have fun with it, then it will be a waste of time. Anything unusual, out of the ordinary, important building etc ok. But a lot more time and effort will I think have to go into getting this right. Start of footpaths, a good one and useful, toilets we all need, (laughs), so maybe, lets have some sensible suggestions. One other suggestion I saw was military establishments. Oh come on, lets not get that lot p*ss*d off with us, or the establishment will see us using gps as a liability.
  3. We often come across compaints of caches being muggled, but one that I came across really surprised me. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...ID=222552&log=y Now, this one is dedication to cache trashing. Is knowhere safe?
  4. Yes I use a palm and had the same problem. I get round that by adding the os co-ords to the caches manually on the palm. A bit tiring I agree, but the only way I could get round that. I know what you mean though, myself I use mapsource, but luckily it came with my gps, otherwise it is an expensive bit of software.
  5. ouch, no he don't have any of his own does he. Well, I would not mess with that dog, so we have to think up something to negotiate with. Of course, the dog might have got him lol. There could be a good reason I suppose, a break up of a relationship, ill health, you name it. Email him, then name and shame him. If that don't work, yes, send the boys round. Long as it's not me, I am not tangling with that dog. lol
  6. That dog on his profile looks a bit evil don't it. Well the man has lots of TB's of his own. Why not email each finder of his TB's as they are found, outlining the plight, and asking them to hold his TB's hostage for you until these are released, or even mailed to you. You then have the power to negotiate, either release the hostage tb's - or his gets it. lol....
  7. We have just spent a few days up in the Brecon Beacon's as we are lucky to live nearby. We looked at online mapping and found that to be expensive as there was no free 'ordnance' mapping. At the least on the Brecon's in our experience you need for the area you suggest the OL12 Brecon Beacons explorer map, cost about 7.50. We put the waypoints for the caches into our gps, and also take the map co-ordnance so we can mark where it is exactly on our map, also looking for a suitable start to the walk. The helpful thing here of course the ordnance map will give all details of 'shaking holes', potholes, crags, type of terrain, (steep) etc. Sorry I can't be of any other help with this as I know it is not what you are looking for, but it is the cheaper option. Of course, a compass is also needed on the Brecons in case your gps was to go down, as unlikely as that would be. And of course a mobile phone just in case. Although we are sure you are aware of all this..
  8. Well done. I can see what you say about summer caching. We have noticed a lot of cachers hang up their gps at this time of year. The reasons as you say. We have been doing a rash of caching this last few days being on holiday, and yes there are a lot of nettles, brambles, etc, and some caches after looking at the logs that we are leaving till winter. Easier to get to caches in winter when all the fern and bracken dies back. We have only done 67 since November last year, and expect it to take us at least two year and maybe a half on that to reach 200. Not the speed man, it's the enjoyment you get out of it.
  9. This topic was a great help to me. I have sometimes felt it would be helpful to have the gps set to ordnance survey mode but did not know if it could be done. As we are often out in the 'wilds', it is helpful as we carry a real map with us to be able to line up with the gps to tell us exactly where we are. Great. Thanks a lot for this topic.
  10. sounds like he was abducted by aliens, and they did not want him, so put him somewhere out of harms way. lol
  11. Like pharisee I have a copy of city select. A great bit of software that will get you to the start of the cache in any part of the country, but this is not a topo map so no good for the hiking. Having said that there is free software that will give contour lines, though not footpaths. We use our gps, a quest, to get to the start of a cache as well as caching, but also use an ordance survey map when needed as sometimes that is needed to find where a footpath starts, or converges. Useful sometimes to find out just where to park....
  12. third-degree- witch it beats me why you would leave ammo boxes under water for a few week)))). I can vouch for the rain in Wales though, I moved here over five years ago before I married my sweetheart Lynne, and the rain, or how heavy it fell, was a bit of a shock. I thought I had moved to the tropics, without the heat. Where I used to live in Kent, a heavy fall was an inch, here none bat an eyelid at three inches in a few hours.....
  13. love this - must get Lynne out with me and have a try with the outside love thing.(laughs). No problem with nettles in Spain - too hot for them - but then again with temps in the 100f mark, too hot for anything else too......
  14. But is 'published' just that - it is there for all to find. Or is there a day for premium members to find the cache first? I am under the impression it is a fast way to find out when a new cache has been listed!!!
  15. People that steal caches belong to the stupid arse dickheads society. So are SADS for short. Hard to believe someone would buy a gps to steal a cache. After all, we don't leave anything of much value in them do we?
  16. Yes know the feeling. One day we did all we needed to in the gower area, then got home to log the found caches, only to find a new one had been published that we would have been able to do as we passed it on our way to the other caches. yes, it gave us an excuse to go back, as we wanted a blank map of the area. lol
  17. We get them signs in our area from time to time, on some of the forest paths. It usually means 'tree felling', and of course are there for your safety. Myself I would find out how long the work is going on for, and disable the cache until then....
  18. Have you read this Thread about topo for mapsource, and they are free Pengy I can vouch for the free topo maps. I put them on my quest and they are super. A warning though, don't put them on unless you have a valid copy of mapsource...
  19. Yes thought the maps would need to be reloaded. A warning for anyone without mapsource on their computer. However, I do have a registered copy, and hey, this is brilliant. Far better than I thought it would be. It may not be something in place of the ordnance map as footpaths are not shown, pity that as we really would have everything then, but hey, this is great as it gives a good idea of what the land will be like. how steep etc by just looking at where the cache is on the gps.
  20. got it now, on the essentials. Looks promising. From what I remember though, I would need to re-download the maps of the uk at the same time as what is in at the moment will be wiped when I put it in. Or can this be added without messing with the mapping already installed using mapsource?
  21. I dowloaded n51 and n52 and unzipped to the file garmin contours, but no reg file. How do I get the reg file?
  22. all fixed and up and running with the ratings again. I will close on this one. Thanks all for your help with this one. As usual always someone here that will help with a problem
  23. Thanks for that one guys. Will change my urls now....
  24. I put the url to all goecacheuk's rating for my caches, so others can know what star rating has been given for my caches. It worked for a couple of days, and now, since the site has been down, it does not work - even though the site is up and running again. Anyone else having this problem. If this still don't work in the next couple of days my feeling is to delete the url allowing the rating to be displayed.
  25. Having a love of writing, I was a correspondent for a local newspaper for three years, I would love to write an article or two. I would offer more, but like many, time is the enemy as life really is very busy nowadays for me. I will look out for the magazine when it comes back online, look at the format, and submit something from time to time. D:
