  1. I host a regular pub event, and if events are going to be more stringently reviewed to ensure they're inclusive and all welcome, does this mean that pub events will no longer be allowed? My interpretation is that you'll be fine. I guess this depends on your (or more likely Groundspeaks) definition of inclusive.... Surely everyone is welcome to attend an event in a "Public House", but some will choose not to based on their own free will and beliefs. Doesn't mean they were excluded, just that they declined to attend. Jon
  2. I can recommend the Fenix TK40 - uses a whopping set of eight AA's, but at least you only have to carry one type of spare battery for either GPSr or torch! It has the ability to run on just four batteries if you can't find eight as well - at the cost of the brightest lumen setting. Jon.
  3. To be honest, I can't remember... I just googled and spotted Amazon have it! It's in NTSC format, but most TV/Players can handle that these days. Jon.
  4. Not sure what the problem is here.... It aint gonna turn up in your local HMV or Blockbusters, but I bought a copy from a UK geocaching website, no worries.Plays fine on my unit and came with a trackable tag too [] Jon.
  5. From GSAK use the "TOOLS" menu option and select "Folder Finder". You can then go straight to the folders in question. Cheers, Jon.
  6. I've been told by a local that the track is not great for biking. What about skipping? Jon
  7. Why not cycle it and only pick up every other cache on the way out, then the skipped ones on the way ack? Jon
  8. The collective name for geocachers is "muppets". As in, "look at that group of Muppets hanging around the phone box" Jon
  9. Montana is quicker on scrolling discoverer maps than the Oregon. But it's still not memory map speed. From what I've seen though, it does depend on the maps regarding the performance. There are some illegally copied maps out there in Internet auction site land that are much slower to move around on. These could well be equally as slow on the Montana, but I've yet to see some in order compare. Jon
  10. What OS are you using? If it's windows, try deleting using the shortname from a command prompt. I.E. do a DIR /X in the directory, then issue a DEL with the TRACK~1.GPX or whatever filename it comes up with. 11. Actually Church is fine, but I find the word "Micro" offensive. Jon
  12. Just so you know, "HE" was responding to the original post, as it was them that had been "very thoughtful" in disabling their cache. Mine was disabled Monday as the log book was full - it was re-instated yesterday lunchtime, using the original Motorway Mayham name after I popped a new log book in it. Jon.
  13. Bought mine from WestBrook cycles and since two friends also wanted them, managed to buy three with a nice discount! Top service, quick delivery! Probably worth mentioning that the Montana DOES NOT seem to support Wherigo cartridges.... just in case that sorta thing floats your boat. Jon.
  14. Very thoughtful. Time for a rebranding maybe? Jon
  15. Garmin Montana gets my vote. But you're gonna have to buy your maps all over again! As you would with the Satmap. The only way to utilise your current significant investment in maps is to stay with a Memory Map product, either go down the Adventurer route - I can't help with any experience of said units though - the paperless geocaching side would need some investigation on that platform OR opt for a smartphone that runs Memory Map, such as an iPhone with GPS. What aspect of Cachemate are you not liking? Jon.
  16. What's the story there? I've just okayed the past three updates whenever they've prompted (I did make a file system backup of the 1gb onboard memory) before doing so, but not had any probs so far. Quite simply, treat the updates with caution, if your GPSr is working and you don't need to update then don't rush out and do it just because the pop up occurs from WebUpdater unless you are prepared for possible problems. For example, release 5.1 of the x50 oregon firmware from earlier this month broke the wireless sharing and caused the unit to re-load all GPX files on every load amoungst other things, although it did add some neat geocaching features. Garmin quickly fixed it, bringing out release 5.2, but in the meantime alot of geocaching trips were disrupted. Keep an eye on the forums for new releases, but keep track of feedback from folks before jumping head first into doing one. J
  17. Probably not the right place to answer, but since you asked here... it offers a bigger screen for us cachers whose eyesight is past it's best, which is why I got one. It also has a Nuvi style Sat-Nav facility with flash screen rotation sensor thingey ma bob (talks directions to you if you have the right mount), supports over ten thousand caches, has a dedicated Garmin battery pack (or uses three AA's)! Interestingly I've found it DOESN'T support Wherigo's though! But for me, it was just the screen size and an unfavourable eye-test that sold it to me. Jon.
  18. Just upgraded to a Montana, so am selling my Oregon 550 if anyone wants one, before I bung it on an auction site (PM me for details)? I can recommend both the Oregon and the Montana, excellent bits of kit, as long as you treat Garmins firmware upgrades with caution. Jon.
  19. It's a Vauxhall Frontera... It doesn' t need an excuse to stop at random and un-opportune moments Regarding the front number plate, it's in the windscreen. Relocated as the front bumper has been replaced with a tubular winch bumper affair. Amber light doesn't mean it was a rescue vehicle, the same as he probably isn't in the army, just because he was wearing DPM's. J
  20. It's not one of them new fangled challenge things to drive up Snowdon and have your vehicle photographed near the top is it? Jon
  21. I'm not surprised he drove, have you seen how much they charge on the train! Jon
  22. Hey Pete, Great to hear from you. Regarding the feedback, I think it can work both ways. I'm very curious about your views of the hobby from someone that has just discovered it. You talk in your Podcast about it being a craze, but for some of us, we've been at it for many years (caching that is, before Carl comments otherwise). I started way back in 2004 and have seen it change from a very niche hobby to something that has gone pretty much mainstream, thanks partly to the iApps. What you see it as now and your experience is interesting, I'd like to understand what folks find so exciting about caching now and how it differs from what caught my attention. Your Podcast is one I've been a regular listener to. Having you two guys doing the reviews is really cool and your reviews and comments are always spot on - I like them much more than on-line stuff as they are very honest. It led directly to my Kindle purchase for example! So I wonder how many Frequency cast listeners will get tuned into caching as a consequence of your podcast about it? Keep on cachin' Jon.
  23. For anyone that doesn't subscribe to the free FrequencyCast podcast, this months show is all about Geocaching! I must admit it made me cringe as they recorded their first time caching experiences looking for Nano caches in what sounded like rather iffy locations... Although it does sound like their idea to search a dog poo bin was their mistake in realising a cache hint. Their recording did leave me rather depressed and wondering at the end, what motivates folks to stick at this game where more and more caches leave you wondering 'why?' They cut alot of the recording from the main show, but it's available for those interested on their web page in addition to the regular show. Top marks to them for sticking with and finding a cache on their fourth attempt though, and keep a look out for one of their five USB Memory Stick travel bugs released. Enjoy, Jon. Edited to add link.
