  1. Great idea, Maybe some will get to the east, upper NYS, Home of the most deployed division the 10th mountain.
  2. I have 4 Hiking books in various parts of NY, they are 50 hikes in Central NY, 50 hikes in Western NY, 50 hikes in the Adirondacks, State Parks and Campgrounds in Northern New York, these were printed in the 90's, If anyone wants them pay the shipping and their yours.
  3. I see the NYS law making body have expanded the "cell phone" law to include texting, also included is "holding the device" included are GPS's, comments?? At a $100.00 for just holding the device in your hand could be expensive.
  4. A couple of years ago I used a Army surplus rain coat, it was light not like the old ones and breathable, I think it was gore-tex. Not to stylish, but the price was right.
  5. I'm going to the Catskills. the first weekend of May, Hopefully I'll do Thomas Cole, Blackhead, and Blackdome, along with some trout fishing and caching.
  6. I ilke my Vista CX by Garmin, good in Tree cover, has all the Bells and whistles.
  7. If you want to check out a neat cache go to zip 13691, the name of the cache is "Empty Cache" GCJRRY, There's a group of pictures showing the way to the cache, I have a "old town loon" which has the front and rear compartments for storage, It's almost 16ft. I use it in the St. Lawrence River which it's ideal for, I've found the shorter Kayaks such as the Otter require to much effort (they go sideways to much) when paddling.
  8. All my Garmins do Can't speak for your model, check the owners manual.
  9. Mine wil be to do more of the 3500ft peaks in the Catskills, maybe some in the Adirondecks also.
  10. I wonder if limiting the amount of caches a person can put out will help, I've also wondered how long should you leave a cache out, (amount of finds)
  11. Great idea but then will we have an oversaturation of Film Canisters???, I also think the rating system should be for the harder caches found, should equal a higher standing or score for the finder.
  12. 2 years ago I and a friend hiked to Seymour Mt. near Tupper Lake NY, When we summited the mountain, I rested on a rock with my trail mix next to me imagine my surprise a chipmunk was trying to get in the bag.
  13. Check out Backpacker Magazine. They do a Gear Guide.
  14. How about a BUCK 102. It's not that fu++++g big. But it's a good size for any chore.
  15. I'll have to get the adapter for the computer, and try it again. Thanks Belair56.
  16. I'm having a problem with my Garmin Blue Legend, when I turn it on I will sometimes get vertical lines on the screen, or a blue cloud moves across the screen, I've done a "hard reset" as instructed by Garmin, A few months ago I tried loading waypoints with the cord, I had to buy the adapter for the cord, It came with a driver disc, I wonder if this is the problem. Any help ??
  17. I have a Vista CX, before that I had the Blue legend, and before that a yellow etrex.
  18. Though not as far I was FTF on the North Point cache in the Catskills, also cached in Phonicia area.
  19. NY's DEC banned geocaching pretty much since the beginning. Then they did a study on geoaching by actually visiting numerous cache sites. The verdict? The impact was negligible and their ban on geocaching was not warranted, so they lifted it. The 2 year rule in NY state parks is not in response to any specific issues. It was only added as a preventative measure. I have nearly 200 active caches, most placed in the woods/backcountry. I challenge anybody other than perhaps an expert tracker to tell me there is a cache in any of the areas by looking at them. As far as the issue in your park, it sounds to me like a suburban or urban park, so we're not talking about the destruction of wilderness here. And as Webscouter mentioned, I bet you go back in a year and there will be no evidence whatsoever that anybody was there. You're right in a year everything will be grown back, but for now it looks bad.
  20. I use the rim runner and the mule, both are good, although the mule is a bit small, I also have a army type camelback, name escapes me but this thing is huge.
  21. I think geo-caching does violate it, on State Land (NYS) the caches have to be replaced every 2 years, (location changed) so the landscape isn't torn up, recently a cache was placed in a public park where I cache, needless to say it looks like a herd of animals went through it, trampling down blackberry bushes enroute to finding a micro.
