  1. Regarding my last post, the ad thing fell through, but I have since been in contact with Azaruk and he gave me great advice. I will post in his thread if anything further happens.
  2. I have web space, but I will need to see the article before I can commit to putting it on my site. Otherwise I'm keen to help. I made a post in another thread about a newspaper ad, which fell through, but I will let you know if things change.
  3. To increase the number of geocachers out there I thought we could try and advertise Geocaching more. To this end I have placed an ad in the Club News section of the Pretoria News, which should hopefully be printed next week. If there are more geocachers, then GlobalRats idea will work in reverse and there will be more caches. Let me know if anyone else places similar ads in their local Newspapers. GlobalRat: I can link to your website from mine if you want. My Webpage
  4. Hey Everyone. Great site GlobalRat. Sorry I havn't been here, Internet troubles. My GPS is the only thing working perfectly at the moment (phew). Can someone explain the Virtual Cache issue? About the stolen caches, it seems to me that the best time to place caches in more public areas is when most people are working. Obviously this isn't always possible.
  5. I propose we start individual threads for each province where we can discuss plans to create more caches.
  6. Count me in for the callenge. Have already placed a small cache, started another and have plans for a third. Go Gauteng! I also have a good Virtual Cache for the Cape, but that might only happen in July. Depending on the moritorium thing of course. Warthog: I think some people like the treasure, others the callenge. My friend enjoys the challenge the most, while I like to have some reward too. But if there's no treasure, I still like to increase my number of found caches, so we'll be there.
  7. This all helps alot. Are there many clubs? I have found that it's alot of fun going Geocaching with friends. We make a day of it because it's nice to relax and have a picknick. That way we can take time on the cache too. We have done some cache hunts with just two of us and it wasn't that social, and was rather quite rushed. Thanks for all the replies. Hope too be seeing some of you in the field soon.
  8. I want to know if Geocachers get together/team up often, because from what I've seen it's almost like alot of people want to keep their identity a secret. I understand this from a website point of view, but does this extend into the actual sport of Geocaching? I've read many logs where a group of cachers have met other cachers, and I have e-mailed and recieved e-mail from other cachers, but should I be more careful, or is the nature of Geocaching just not very social? So many questions!!!
  9. I placed my first cache today. If all goes well it should be a great cache. Now to wait for approval. In two weeks or so I will check on another cache that I'm working on. If they both go through then that's new caches in places that really need them. I had another idea for a cache, and I'm going to share it here because it will only work through a combined effort. So here goes: Someone researches and sets up a virtual cache which is actually a nice braai area. Then he/she or another person sets up a second cache, which is a micro cache with an invitation to a Geocacher get-to-gether/bring-and-braai, scheduled much later in the year. The invite contains the coordinates to the virtual cache. So, if it works then a whole bunch of people pitch up to braai and swap geocaching adventure stories. I think this idea would work in places where a number of geocachers stay, like Pretoria, Johannesburg, Cape Town and so on. The invite would have to stay in the micro cache though . Let me know what everyone thinks, and if it has or hasn't been done before. A special 'event cache' could be set up for the day, and a race held to see who finds it first.
  10. Yes, that does. Pretoria has quite alot of geocaches, there are at least five within 5km of my house. I will be going to Dullstroom this weekend and maybe I will place a cache there, or at least research it. I really think it's better when people put effort into placing their caches. Of the four that I found so far, only two were really well thought out. The more difficult were also the most fun, especially if we had to come back and try again.
  11. I'm new to the sport and really enjoying it. We have so far found four geocaches, but I have researched many more. (I'm lining them up for the holidays). My question though is this: How often do most of you place geocaches? I'm almost ready to place my first, and at the same time I'm wondering if I shouldn't place another somewhere else at the same time. My first geocache is going to be placed near Carletonville, which I visit every second week (Carletonville is roughly at: S26 21.797 E27 23.778), but I stay in Pretoria. Does anyone who stayes in Pretoria think there are too many caches here, or too few.
