  1. I agree to this statement, I only just saw this thread, but I'm keen. Have an exam at the end of July so the 17th'ish is good for me, but I'll need more details. Can maybe convince AE_James to come too.
  2. If anyone knows where I can get hold of the Ratels Voortrekkerspan please let me know, the Fort 1 cache went missing and I replaced it for them, and would like to adopt the cache if they arn't going to keep it running, since it's easy for me to get to the Fort to maintain the cache.
  3. My brother is an extreamly good illustrator, and he wanted me to give him an idea for some practice. So I asked him to draw me Geocaching. Well, if this is his practice, you must know how his serious works are. Still trying to get him to colour it in for me.
  4. Okey people, some of us only have 56k modems. Have mercy with the image sizes please!
  5. I've finished doing my research and don't want to waste space on the forum, so I'm closing this thread. If you need to contact me, just send an e-mail. Thanks for all the help guys.
  6. Apparently SA has one of the highest road death rates. I know this lady who's head of the driving instructors thing-a-ma-bob and she said it's quite scary how many 'fake' driving instructors are out there. So don't speed, cuz you might have to deal with a pupil of theirs
  7. I'm locking this thread. My research is all done and I don't want this post to wait around aimlessly. If there are any questions please feel free to e-mail me.
  8. Nooo, time to get my rear in gear! How long should caches be disabled for? Surely some amount of time is okey? Just want to know some opinions.
  9. There's no real story to this picture. We were at Swartkops Airforce Museum, looking at all the planes and things, and I took this picture. I also did two locationless caches here (Warbirds and Av8er) . The jet is a Mirage III, and in the black t-shirt is AE_James, fellow member of Team Ancient Explorations. I thought the clouds looked really cool in the background.
  10. This photo was taken by my dad. We were on a hunting trip in the Limpopo Province, not so long ago. This tree is possibly the largest single stem tree in the Southern Hemisphere. I'm not sure of the history behind the whole thing, but there's apparently a big debate going on if this or another tree is the largest. There are apparently many criteria that go into measuring a tree like this. What amazed me most was that the tree doesn't have a hard bark, it's actually quite soft. I placed Land of the Giants just after visiting here, and the coordinates for this tree are in that cache listing. (Note: The tree is on private property, so you'll have to do some detective work if you want to visit it )
  11. So we can put up pics from caches we placed? Also, can we put in pics from locationless caches (he he, this is for GlobalRat, who said I shouldn't do so many locationless caches ) You might need to put a link up here on how to put images up, for those too lazy to use the search function on this forum. (Who? Me? Never!)
  12. IVxIV: Thanks, I see. I'll look into it some more. So the hand helds also have help menues? I don't know of any Garmin GPSrs that have help menues, but I guess that's why they give manuals with such things. Greymane: Cool, thanks. My buddies dad bought a GPS enabled cellphone and will be testing it out on a few cache hunts.
  13. The response to the questionnaire has been way beyond my expectations. (Okey, not way, way past my expectations, but I'm being positive ) To date I have had 24 responses to the questionnaire. The report will be going in this week on the 30th of June, and I'll let everyone know how it went.
  14. I'll have to see about giving the paper out, but I'm sure it can be done, since I'm not planning to get it published. I'll keep you informed.
  15. Yeah, number 15! Personally, I'm only trying to beat Brick, but I guess I have a long way to go. I'm only always trying to beat my own score, so this is cool, now I can try and beat this rating too. I think this rating system is a bit biased towards people who can go caching on a regular basis. But, since that doesn't affect me, I'm not complaining QFC, you should do a travelbug specific rating system, that would be interesting. But thanks for this system, it's cool.
  16. The Lowrance GPSs aren't really hand held devices are they? Isn't that why they can support help menues, because they are much larger devices? Or am I wrong?
  17. He read the post and said: "It was good." I realise alot of new cachers might be far from any findable caches, but those who live near caches have no excuse. Also, when you're new to cache placing you don't know what needs to go into the upkeep of the caches you own.
  18. Hey, thanks to everyone who has helped out already, I have had a total of 11 replies in all so far, and learn't alot of interesting things. My paper is comming along well.
  19. Hey everyone, I'm busy doing acedemic research on GPS interfaces (yes, and excuse to do more caching ) If anyone can help please let me know: 1. My Garmin GPS III Plus doesn't have any help menues on it, but does have a simulator. Do other GPS receivers have help menues? And if so, which ones. 2. Are there such things as GPS enabled cellular/mobile phones. 3. I have a questionnaire that you can fill in at:My Webpage Thanks very much
  20. I saw a link to this from the geocaching.com site.
  21. Well, for something that is very geocaching related, check out my questionnaire at My Webpage. It's all to do with GPSr and there's a question that asks how often you use your GPS and one that asks what activities you do. There's a geocaching option This thread won't run very long anyway, as it's only a semester project and has to be finished relatively soon.
  22. Geocaching has, I think, the best online community. Generally eveyone is great and we all get along very well (Because Geocachers are the best people). Now's your chance to prove me right: A friend of mine is doing research into Smilies ( ) for his honour project and would greatly appreciate it if people would give their input to his questionnaire. You can find his questionnaire at my3q. Please not that this is an acedemic questionnaire and the results arn't used to make him or me rich
  23. I've seen the Tswane map before, it's pretty cool, though I didn't know there were airial photos until now. Now to find my house...
  24. I like the website, and think it's a great contribution to SA Geocaching. I had an idea a while ago, and after briefly meeting Noddy from KZN I really thought someone should do this. What we do is suggest holiday caches, for example, if I decide to go down to Cape Town, I look on the website for recommended camping sites and so on, and with that there should be a list of caches that are reasonably maintained and worth doing. I don't know what everyone else thinks, but I think this could promote caching in new places, other than close to home.
  25. Check out maps.google.com. Lots of USA stuff, but you can switch to satallite and check out South Africa. The level of detail is not as good as the USA, but it's still cool.
