  1. I'd really like to know how many SA Geocoins have been made, and if more will be made next year or if they will be different. On the back of the coin it says 2005, so I'm guessing that there wont be more, or will they have a different design next year? I've looked on the web and there are loads of trackable coins out there, even ones that look like ammo boxes. It's amazing how people get into the coin side of Geocaching.
  2. FYI, overseas cachers have the same problems, this is a universal thing: South African Forum Travel Bug Support Group. It just happens cuz of muggles or ignorant cachers.
  3. And the list grows. So far I have: -GlobalRat x2 -GeoPoppit -Brick x5 -cache-fan -Inspector Gadget 79 x1 -AE_Rodney -warthog
  4. The list of interested people so far: -Noddy -Jam & Toast
  5. Congrats TVM from team Ancient Explorations on behalf of AE_James and myself. You guys are the first in what I'm sure will be a long line of South Africans finding more and more caches! We'll pray for your son in law. Edinburgh is a lovely place, I hope you bring back photos!
  6. I'm back and in da house so let's get this thing going! Thanks Noddy for the link. Here is a list of who's comming so far. Please let me know if I have the wrong numbers: - GlobalRat - GeoPoppit - Brick x5 - cache-fan - Inspector Gadget 79 - AE_Rodney I'd like to have a confirmed number before the 1st of September so I can book a table, cuz it looks like it's gonna be a beeeg one. Also, if anyone can donate name tags it might be worthwhile. If you have any questions or ideas let me know! It's gonna be fun!
  7. Event cache listing submitted: Unite the Clans. Date: 10 September 2005 (A Saturday) Time: 7pm Venue: Meeting next to Winkelwindpomp cache, then go to resturant. I really hope this works, but I agree with Brick that we must just go ahead
  8. I guess the question is where then. I'm thinking Brooklyn Mall or maybe the place where WindpompWinkel is placed? I think Brooklyn is pretty central. Let me know.
  9. Great response so far. Let me know if anyone has any ideas of a good place to have this. I was thinking the Keg in Brooklyn, but there are often lots of kids pretending to be adults there. Let me know if you have any ideas. Other cachers from other provinces are welcome to share ideas. Maybe someone in KZN can set up an event cache there. Will be away from my PC for awhile, but keep the comments comming in. I'll set the event up when I come back, unless someone beats me to it.

    Which Gps?

My opinion, you don't need all the bells and wistles. For example, how many of us would like a cellphone that's just a cellphone and not a camera. Usability, usability, usability! I rank the eTrex as highly usable cuz it has a joystick type button. I use the Garmin GPSIII Plus which hasn't let me down even if it's old.
  11. The next question is, should we make it an event cache? I think we could give the coordinates of a pub and that would be all we'd need to do. According to the guidelines: "Event caches should be submitted no less than two weeks prior to the date of the event." Which unfortunatly means no event cache for the 19th. Anyway, we'll see how this goes. If people agree with me then we'll make an event cache for sometime near the end of this month. I bet if we set it up there will be at least 6 cachers that would come, no matter if it's in Jo'burg or Pta.
  12. Maybe we shouldn't talk dates yet, cuz I know I already made promises for the 19th. Still, depending on the time maybe I can make it. Anyway, this is a good sign that there are people who are interested. I say if there are more people keen for the 19th of August then you should all go ahead. I'll ask around more. I recon this is one of those things that will only happen if people do it and stop talking about it. If anyone else is interested please let us know.
  13. There has been alot of talk about event caches, but nothing has happened. I was thinking, and wanted to get other oppinions, about having a get together at a pub in Pretoria or Joburg on a Friday or Saturday, so that people can get to meet and swap bugs and tell stories. I think this could be the first step to starting up some event caches. All the geocachers I've met are really nice people and it will be way better talking that typing.
  14. Well, it's not surprising they have so many finds. I checked caches in New York City, 4382 caches! SA has a way to go, but I'm sure we will get there. Go SA Go!
  15. Stoddard's Demise Exploration Rover Because they require a high level of detective work. Also any locationless cache that gets found only once every two weeks. You know the ones, the ones that you really have to be lucky (or work hard) to find.
  16. AE_James can collaborate with you. Let me know and I'll get him to contact you or e-mail me and I'll give you his details.
  17. I just got my first SA Geocoin, thanks to Geocacher_coza, and they are numbered. I won't be placing it in any caches though. But the tracking thing is a good idea, especially cuz that makes the game all the more interesting.
  18. There was a Travel Bug that worked on a similar idea, it carried a bag and the finder was asked to use then replace the bag. Very cool, I'll do the same. Thanks for the idea.
  19. Hey, that's a great idea. I bought some plain dog tags a long time ago (when I thought that was fashionable ) and I guess you could even stamp the tracking number into something like that.
  20. Ooo, questions... I know the coins arn't currently trackable, but do they have numbers on them or would these have to be added? It would be cool to be able to track them, but wouldn't this cause confusion with cachers who didn't know there was another site? I'm just wondering if you can explain the whole thing some more plz.
  21. Can the next one to find the KZN cache plz rescue my TB Voice of Africa. He has a race to win here people! Oh, and I'm a GP cacher looking for a KZN cacher.
  22. Geocaching, a nurd sport? Well then pass me a pocket protector and some thick glasses! To answer Discombob, I checked my cache logs and no new cachers from that time period logged any of mine. Personally I listen to TUKS FM or Highveld, 5FM is too Back Street Boyish for me.
  23. I understand that people might want expensive stuff in their caches, but to me that seems to be abit pointless, as long as the stuff isn't trash or useless. Most of my caching treasure is stuff that I've had lying in boxes or draws that I think someone else would like. When I take something, I always try and leave something of equal value. That said, I have quite often left treasure without taking treasure, which alot of geocachers do, and I think that's a great way to keep caches full. So, what do I leave? Mostly small toys and collectable things such as cards and so forth.
  24. I think you should e-mail everyone with the details. If you email me then I'll forward on to all the cachers I know or have e-mail addresses for: AE_James GlobalRat Brick cache-fan cilliers corollarsi greengrass Noddy clemisons (I havn't spelt all the names right, in a bit of a hurry, sorry).
