  1. Phlatlander, Your pictures are great and just what I had finally figured out with one exception (maybe two. Ha!) One picture you did not show was the "large data" selection which the data field can be changed. I don't remember if the "Geocaching Profile" I have set up is a custom profile or one that came setup on the Oregon originally. Anyway, I have a profile called "Geocaching" which I have modified to meet my desires. Background screen is white with my name and address. Easier for me to see and hopefully will help get my GPSr back if it becomes misplaced. I have the compass set up with the small data fields. It works for me. I change the data fields at different times depending on what I want to be available at that time. Right now I think I have Time of Day, GPS Accuracy, Location, Distance to Destination. Again, I guess this sort of wandered from what the OP asked, but I think others with Oregons will probably find it useful. Who knows?
  2. I guess I am not understanding "Geocaching Active" Mode. Please explain how to get there, because as I am using the Oregon under the Geocaching Profile, I have not had a problem of not having a dashboard. Not arguing, just trying to see where you are at. I guess we could be talking apples vs oranges. Thanks OK, I see now what you are talking about after a little research (I had to charge my batteries for the Oregon ). I have always used the dashboard choice on the "Compass" page of "Small" or "Large" data fields and not the "Active Geocaching" mode. I can have the same information available (I think) as the "Active Geocaching" mode while using the "Small or Large" data field choices, but I can change it to what I want. Sorry for the confusion/misunderstanding. I learn something and forget something about the Oregon 450 each day. Sorry I did not understand what the OP was saying and the previous answers.

  4. Maybe I am missing something, but if you are on the compass screen, you can change the dashboard boxes at the top to any option you want. Just hold you finger on the thing you want to change ie the little red pointer for a second or so and then when you take it off you will have an option menu appear to change to other things ie distance to waypoint, etc. If you have four boxes and want to change it to two etc. tap the dashboard button in the lower right corner. You can pretty much customize the various screens to what you want displayed in the dashboard for that screen. Play with it. I have changed my screens many times to suit at times. I am still not completely settled on how I want things. Ha! If you are talking about something else, please post additional info or maybe even screen shots of the 450. Hope this helps.
  5. A couple of things. Are you loading them into an SD card or the main memory? I read somewhere that some had problems like you describe and their remedy was to load the GPX files onto the SD card. Then if it didn't show up in the field as you describe to turn off the unit. Remove the SD card. Turn the unit back on. Turn it off and reinsert the SD card. Turn the unit back on and it will search again (refresh) finding all the GPX files. Now having said all of this, I thankfully have not personally had the problem and hope I don't. This work-around seems like a big pain in the backside to me. Hope this helps.
  6. I had heard about GPS's and how it was real handy to mark favorite fishing/hunting locations, etc. At the time I thought I know where my favorite places are. I don't need to mark them. Then a few years ago, my son got a basic unit for his hunting excursions. I saw it in action and decided maybe it would be a nice toy to play around with. Bought one on sale and began playing with it. I saw mention of Geocaching in some of the paperwork that came with it. It really looked like a good way to become more proficient at using the device before I really needed to depend on it. Signed up and as they say the rest is history.........
  7. Personally, I have a Windows phone with the free app. I tried it once to compare it to a GPSr. It was in bright sunlight and I couldn't see the phone display, but the Oregon 450 was good to go. The only time I would use the phone for caching would be if I was in a area without planning ahead (no GPSr or not preloading it) and I wanted to see if any caches were around to kill some time. You guys with younger eyes may not have that problem. Oh, and you may think, how do you use the phone for other things? Get it located in a shaded area which is not advantageous when you are trying to follow it towards a cache location.
  8. That's what I was afraid of. Not a big deal, but it would be nice to have a way to re-order them. Oh well, now to decide if it is worth it. Ha!
  9. Uploading pictures on found logs is not a problem. My question is: once they have been uploaded, is there an easy way to edit the order that they appear on the page? Basically, short of deleting them and uploading them again in the order you want, is there a way to edit the order? TIA
  10. My son-in-law just got a PM about 2 months ago in preparation for a long vacation trip with his family. He has exactly that GPSr and a laptop. The PQ's along a route feature was his main reason for getting a PM. All worked well for them and I think they felt it was well worth it. If you cache on a semi-regular basis it is probably worth it. I held out because I had the same GPSr and didn't think the PQ's were that much of an advantage, but then bought an Oregon and decided I needed PM. It probably would have been to my advantage to get the PM earlier in my Geocaching adventures.
  11. It has been awhile since I have done it, but I know you can upload caches "Found" using GSAK and the built in Macro. Because I haven't done it in awhile, I don't remember the steps, but if you go to GSAK forums, they will be able to help you. As I remember, you have to add notes and log entries in GSAK and then upload.
  12. I have had a intermittent similar problem. USB powers up the 450, but it does not connect to the computer. When it happens, I have let it go ahead and complete the start up powered by the USB port. Then using the power switch shut off the unit. Unplug the USB cable and plug it back in with a little wiggle action (the cord, not me. Ha!) Most of the time it then connects to the computer as another drive. Sometimes this has to be done a couple of times. I have always attributed it to a possible flaky USB port on my laptop. Who knows, but it does become annoying sometimes. Hope there is a GOOD solution found.
  13. I guess the challenge in many cases gets the best of me. I guess I do have a DNF OCD on some. Puzzle caches (after making the effort to solve the cache puzzle) I can't let it go unfound. I have gone back to one a couple of times before finding it. Others just are some that beg to be found and I can't let them go. Ha! You know, the ones you know have to be there, but just see you coming and duck out of sight. Ha! Others just don't need a second look, unless I am in the area and have time to look. Saying all of this, I do periodically go back and check out my DNF's and sometimes go back to get the frown turned upside down.
  14. This is funny, because I had just thought about this yesterday as I was looking at my stats and thought about starting a thread. 15% for me.
  15. But do you leave your mail in the box for weeks/months on end?
  16. AZ, I am really offended now. In checking on your special Geocoin for marking special caches, I see you didn't use it for the only cache of mine you've found. Maybe sometime I will meet your standard.
  17. I like to think that a CO has obtained adequate permission when I see something that appears to be on private property. Yes I have looked for a cache that is on private property, but have in some cases had some reservations. The longer I cache the more I try to think that a cache has been placed with the permission because of course the guidelines for placing a cache state that you have obtained permission and on the submission form you have to check that you have read and are abiding by the guidelines. I really do appreciate it however, when a CO states that they have received permission in their cache description. Humm!
  18. I have used the map and then the compass when I get closer as others have said, but after seeing A-Team's post I may try the pointer on the map screen as I also have an Oregon 450. I do like the fact that on the Oregon 450 the compass screen allows for more data ie distance to destination, time, cache name, etc to be displayed. This may still be my preference after trying the Pointer on the map screen. Time will tell. I think a lot of the choices are based on what you start doing and become familiar with.
  19. From my experience when I called Garmin and had a Venture HC repaired, Garmin told me up front that it is very unlikely that I would get my original unit back (and all it needed was the rubber band around the case replaced). I told them that I was willing to wait for mine to be repaired, but even with the note added to the request, I received a different unit. It is a backup for my 450, but to date has been working fine in the few times I have used it. It was just like a new unit.
  20. And the other front door method http://www.geocachingadmin.com/ which takes you to options for all kinds of things including online logging for any type of cache. Just need to have some info like the GC #
  21. That's how I got it a few days ago. Windows Phone Store and it's FREE.

  23. Logging a PMO cache by Basic Members is not a backdoor issue as far as I can see. Go to http://www.geocachingadmin.com/ and the ability to log a cache find is right there. It is not hidden or trickery in anyway that I can see. When I was a basic member I used it many times to log PMO caches as well as using a few backdoor methods (maps, etc) prior to finding this admin site. I guess now that I am a PMO, my old logs won't be deleted. (Unless I drop my PM at a later date. )
  24. ***There is NO REASON to not log a DNF.*** I can think of two-- As was previously stated I Found It and I didn't go looking for it--No GOTO clicked.
  25. BaseCamp is free and works pretty well, but GSAK is (IMHO) much more powerful in what it is capable of doing. GSAK has a greater learning curve than BC. GSAK has a free trial period and then a fee if you like it and decide to use it. I use both for different things as both (IMHO) have their place in caching. Ha!
