  1. I didn't know about the unchallenge but ended up play it anyway. I read this thread and tallied mine up this morning, 19 caches. I'm a stats nerd too and and that's an insane low number. I also thought about this quite a bit. The math is easy. This is the bag with marked balls where you select without replacement. Since the population size is so huge, 7M caches, and our sample size is so small, it's not unreasonableness to make this a bag with 7 marked balls with replacement. Given: n >= 7 We find the probability that there is 7 unique selections and (n - 7) duplicates is (1/7) ^ 7 * (6/7) ^ (n - 7) Since the first draw and the last draw must be unique, that means the 2nd and (n-1)th draws have (n - 2)! permutations of the order that unique and duplicates balls are drawn. (1/7) ^ 7 * (6/7) ^ (n - 7) * (n - 2)! I think! I'll could put it in a spread sheet and see if I get the curve you have but stuff.
  2. My uncle gave me a Garmin Legend that's barely been used. It has tracks back to 1/18/2005. It still has the Garmin waypoint in Olatha, KS on it! It was used to find a cache in St Edward, NE on 9/18/2005. I've been trying to figure out what that cache's code is so I can look up the log. I tried Project-GC but I can't figure out how to do a archive search there. Can someone with more experience help me out plz? The coords are: N41 34.352 W97 51.830 N41.57253 W97.86383 I've got a FTF prize!
  3. My GPS works fine on my mountain bike. When I put it on my exercise bike, it doesn't do anything, no mph, no odometer, nothing. I've get a strong signal in my living room but nothing happens. Any idea how I can get it working? Thx! Jason aka Husker
  4. Speaking of server traffic, when you're drilling down the date ranges for each one of those PQs, how many tries does it take until you get a range you like? 3? 5? 7? Multiply that by 15 PQs (the number it take to get all of my state) and you've effectively generated anywhere from 50 to 100 PQs. Sure they don't get mailed but the server sorted the data to generate the preview list.
  5. You can open the gpx file with a notepad/wordpad and use replace all to change "<name>GC" to "<name>". Not very practical if you're doing each cache separately.
  6. So I can't tell even my wife the name of a cache, a description of a cache, or the coordinates of a cache if I'm reading off my PDA. That's exactly what you're saying. I am the licensee, she is a third party, telling her is a transfer and cache names, descriptions, and coordinates are data. By the way, it would be great to get a query of caches that neither myself nor my caching buddies have found so that when we go caching together and only look for the caches that both of us can log as found.
  7. I get the same error and can't rename the route in either Firefox or Exploder
  8. I've done three. One was a micro in the mailbox and invited the finder across the street to the owner’s house if you're interested in meeting. I went to the house and found this travel bug just sitting on the driveway. The cacher wasn't at home, kinda disappointing as he is quickly becoming one of Michigan's most proficient cachers. My second kinda sucked. I saw the mom and they had a license plate on their van that had something to do with caching. I went over and introduced myself and she pretty much was sending out the its-my-idiot-jerk-husband-that-geocaches-why-don't-you-leave-now vibes. And my third was nice. I was the third finder on a brand new cache. The Mrs. was out on the riding mower, well, mowing. After doing my cache thing, I introduced myself, shared my people meeting coin and let her go about her mowing. For the cache log, they wanted a tall tale so I included her.
  9. When you are designing a CAR (caches along a route) PQ on the Pocket Query Toolbox, there isn't a link to Manage your Pocket Queries. If I have a long route and want to split it up by date, I like to clone the PQ from Manage your Pocket Queries page. It would make this step easier if there was a link back to the page like the other PQ toolbox pages. And I really like the CAR feature. I was just getting ready to pull caches along I-75 from Michigan to Florida. That's a task that used to take several hours to figure out the PQ's so GSAK could crunch the numbers. This certainly will be a time saver.
  10. You know, it's not even about the stuff, it's the violation. You can get new stuff but that feeling of insecurity lingers.
  11. I bought a Palm IIIex on eBay for $30 last year. It's a little slow sorting 1000 caches but it really does pretty much everything I could hope for.
  12. The connectors are about $30 at Radio Shack. I have used them at work a couple of times. They come with a driver. Of the two I have bought from Radio Shack, one came with a cd and one with a floppy. The CD didn't work but the floppy worked for both. I'm unsure way. The machines they were loaded on had embedded os/software and that could be a factor. Once installed, they have been reliable.
  13. Same problem with Daisy (TBN6QJ) going into Time to Fly (GCPFZA)
  14. It depends on the latitude. At the equator, the distance will the greatest. A tenth of a degree at the equator is 6.9 miles. At 45 degrees, it's a 4.88 miles. At 80 degrees, 1.2 miles. Guess what it is at 90 degrees is... Are you sure you were a tenth of a degree off? It looks more like a thousandths of a degree.
  15. Except that Toyota does have a plant in Baja California, Mexico. They don't have a plant in Brazil but is Argentina close enough? They also have plants in Thailand, Indonesia and South Africa. Not to mention Toyota opted for Canada last July instead of the US for a new plant.
  16. Are these actually being made by cachers in these states? Or are some of them being made like the Hawaii coin is? The Nebraska organization has been working on a coin. Sweet, I'll take 50!
  17. I have a Colorado coin that I gave to people to check out when I was MiGO Fall event. After they handed it back, I would give them a business card to log it. It's my "People Meeting" coin. I usually carry it with me when I cache just in case I meet another cacher.
  18. That's this one. It ended up $621.99 for the set of 4. From someone with no history too. Perhaps the buyer and seller are both MiGO members and possibly have made arrangements to exchange in person.
  19. It's funny you should mention this. Until yesterday, I hadn't seen one like this. However, I found two yesterday that had secondary caches with a code. You send the code to the owner and he sets you up with the prize. The crazy thing is I accidentally found the second stages first for both of them. And just to add some insult, I could find the first stage for one of them and the owner didn't let me claim the prize. Oh well...
  20. LIES! ALL LIES! I hit two in the Hooser State, ERNIE KEEBLER'S CACHE and St. Pat's Cache III. And as for the milage, about 400 of that was going to and from the Project Ape cache. Skip that one and there's much les burn out and many more finds. I did it for the children!
  21. I've been doing a lot of caching the last few days. Tuesday I hit 6, Wednesday I got 23, yesterday was 12 and today I have 5. I've put 800 miles on my truck in the process. I'm sitting here at Panera and just can't force myself to go look for anymore. I'm spent. I can't wait for Sunday so I can go caching again...
  22. AtlantaGal, you couldn't change to that if you wanted to. eBay shows that handle was taken a mere 7 years 1 month ago. Like me, that was during the days (or is it daze?) of selective activation. Here's a question for the masses, would it make any difference to you if I put my cache handle in the discription? I have a perfect 150 feedback rating. Would knowing my caching handle help me or does my feedback stand on its merit?
  23. I don't use my geo-handle because it was long gone well before selective activation was turn off. My eBay handle is homebrew1. I have sold a couple of USA geocoins and my Legend. I currently have two consecitive numbered USA coins up for sale. I wonder if that's a good hook or not.
