  1. Thought all you cachers out there would like this article. It's a 72 hour survival kit in an Altoid's Can. Hope you enjoy http://www.survival.com/best.htm
  2. Wow thanks Leo, that sounds like a wonderful site, I will definately check it out!
  3. Wow sounds good :-) I didn't know that was there...I know they USED to have their Mcdonalds there decked out in Troy Aikman stuff as that is his home town. Alright, thanks for the tip. Anymore help anyone? :-)
  4. So you can connect external power while using this then? Just want to make sure as that will definately be important :-)
  5. Well, let me put it this way...at this point we are travelling 4600 Miles or so in about 9 days. We did this last year out west. Its a bit different out there because in my opinion, most of the things to see are BIG and a lot of it is scenery seen from your car. We did a lot of Interstate travel there, but also did US 101 and California 1. I am not going to be on the Interstate the WHOLE time, but the majority of it yes, just due to time constraints. Also due to time, we are not going far into maine, just enough to say we've been there, maybe stop somewhere in the south, then we are cutting across southern NH and VT. The nice thing is I know that things are quite a bit closer together up that way so out of the way would not be as much...out of the way :-)
  6. Cool..so is 30ish about the price that I will find them for, or anything cheaper?
  7. Thanks! Well this is for a trip that will be over a week long so just want to make sure I am doing the right thing. Right now I am seeing them for about $30 or so online, which is cheaper than they were last year when I was considering buying one. Any cheaper ones?
  8. I think I actually posted this same question last year but could not find last years post Anyway, I was wondering how good the windshield mounts work for the Meridian Units. I think last year I actually saw 2 different types, but was wondering about experiences (how well it holds in place, etc) and also where to get them for the best prices.
  9. This year as with Last year, my dad and I are going on a vacation to explore unseen parts of our great country. We are originating in Oklahoma. Last year we went west and saw a lot of great things. This year, we are going to the gulf coast, up through DC, Philly, NYC, etc., touching Maine, then coming back down to Niagara Falls and possibly through Canada, out at Detroit and the back down south towards home. I am not particularly looking for caches to do, since I can obviously look those up for myself online. Rather, I am looking for interesting things to see or do, that preferrebly do not take a great amount of time. Also definately welcome are good places to eat! For the most part we will be on the Interstate, but I am not unwilling to deviate within reason! Anyway, any ideas are most welcome! HipsterDo0fus Oklahoma City, OK

  11. Ok, ok, I'm SORRY this isn't really a geocaching topic, but I know that my geocaching compadre's could be helpful in this. 12. Thanks for all the input so far. Yeah that would be cool if you had a cache nearby and could put the current conditions on the page. On some of these units, I am guessing that you could buy the console for cheaper and then buy extra sensors later? That would be a nice way of defraying the price. HipsterDo0fus
  13. Ok, this is NOT really geocaching related, just something I figured SOME people here may be interested in, so hopefully i don't get r-u-n-n-o-f-t. Anyway, I live in Oklahoma, where the weather can change drastically in a few minutes , so weather is of interest to me. Anyway, I am looking at some wireless weather stations, something that I can stick out in my yard and have a readout inside. There are lots of things out there available, I was just wondering if anyone here had experience with this type of equipment. I am trying to get the most features for the least buck, aren't we all? Possibly something that can even interface with my PC, so I can keep records. If anyone has recommendations, that would be wonderful. It's just a little hobby, so I don't want to make it too expensive...I want more of my money to go to geocaching of course! HipsterDo0fus OKC, OK
  14. I am not from North Central OK, but I have done some caches there, does that count? :-) I am fromt he OKC area. Anyway, I know there are a few caches (or were) up around Ponca. By the way, I am sure you are always welcome to come to meetings and such here in OKC or also in Tulsa! HipsterDo0fus The Village, OK
  15. Thanks...sounds like as far as a real mount for this goes the RAM is the mount of choice. I am still interested if there are any other people out there who have used the cell phone type mount....I'd prefer a mount though where i don't have to glue anything to my poor meridian lol...sorry..but the trip I am going on is quite expensive to start off with, so I am looking for the cheapest options i can find, so the $40-$45 RAM is a bit steep. Anymore ideas? -HipsterDo0fus Edmond, OK
  16. Thanks for the info guys. I have a couple of comments/questions. First of all, I do know what type of cars this will be used in...I have a ford ranger, but I am going on a trip in a rental car, which will be a ford taurus, so I am not sure how that may affect what i use. Ok, first question, with this RAM mount, are you able to keep the power plugged in on the unit? this is going to be a 9-10 trip so obviously i don't what to use that many batteries :-). Second of all, someone earlie recommended a cheap alternative of a universal cell phone holder....I mean you can get these things for 5 bucks! My question is, is there one of these out there that a meridian would fit in and not be too heavy for? Again thanks for all the info so far! HipsterDo0fus Edmond, OK
  17. Thanks..yeah I was suprised..I think the cheapest I have seen that mount for is 30-something. Does it work well? does it get the unit close enough to you? I guess anything is an advantage to holding it with your hand or taking your eyes off the road!
  18. Hello there fellow meridian users. I am taking a trip soon and want to see about getting something to mount my meridian in a car. I have seen 2 possible options. One of them lists itself as just a swivel mount...I am not sure what it mounts to...it says it can mount to a dash but i don't understand how it does that. The other option is the suction cup mount. The "swivel mount" i have seen for as low as like $14.95...the suction cup mount is insanely expensive..i've seen it for OVER $50! That seems a little steep to me seeing as how i barely paid over $200 for my GPS...anyway, if someone could give me some insight on these..or offer other alternatives if they exist. Thanks HipsterDo0fus -Edmond, OK
  19. Thanks for more replies. Everyone is pushing Yosemite! :-) Well we will just have to see...currently we are stressed for time...this will tend to be more of a survey than getting to see lots of detail. An updated page for looking at this info is: http://members.cox.net/hipsterdoofus/trip/ I plan on keeping this updated. Funny enough, I don't know how much geocaching i'll be able to do either, although wouldn't mind doing some that are quite easy and quite on the way! Again thanks for all the input.
  20. Alrighty then....just to give you folks a better idea of where we are planning on going, I have made a seriously terrible quality map. I plan on working on it though and making it look nicer and adding more labels and such. It is kinda big though so I will just put up a link to it. It is at: http://members.cox.net/hipsterdoofus/trip/map.jpg So maybe that will show you roughly the route we are taking for help on stuff that may be along the way :-) Thanks. 21. Wow thanks for all the info so far. Right now it sounds like we are going to be going north from Oklahoma City, to Denver then Rocky Mountain Park, Then up to YellowStone, then on up through montana and Idaho and eventually over to Seattle. Then we plan on going mostly down the coast, through the redwoods, then on into California. From california, we will eventually come back on I-40. I had Definately planned to hit the Grand Canyon as well, and mostly likely the crater too. I also plan on making a special stop for a picture of me standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona . Again thanks for all the tips so far. Right now I am planning the stops that are closes to our route, and side trips that are a ways off of there will be an option if we have time. (Oh and if anyone knows of any good eat places on the way, that would be nice too ). HipsterDoOfus Edmond, OK
  22. Thanks for the tips so far. I plan on seeing a lot of natural sites mostly, but also wouldn't mind a few other things along the way. Thanks for the help on finding out about national parks....any other tips on interested places to visit would be a help. Also, I am looking for the best way to plan out the trip with all the points mapped out and such. Thanks for all the help, HipsterDo0fus
  23. Hello all, I am from Oklahoma and me and my dad are planning on taking somewhat of a survey of the states west of here..probably hit NM, AZ, CA, OR, WA..and others im sure...anyway, I know this doesn't have to do with geocaching but I was wondering if some of you from your experiences travleing, or perhaps planning caching trips could tell me what your favorite tools are for planning a trip like this? Any really good websites? The trip will most likely be about 9 days long, we hope to see a lot of things along the way, so suggestions on things to see would be appreciated to...I may have to accidently get some caches along the way too hehe :-) Thanks HipsterDo0fus Edmond, OK
  24. Ok sorry forgot to add in some comments. I am probably going to stay away from Sonys that use their memory because from what I can tell the sony memory sticks are proprietary and more expensive. I am also looking for DEFINATELY more storage than a floppy disk, as mentioned, will want to look into as much as 256 mb of additional memory. I will use this camera primarily for geocaching but also for some outdoorsy shots and stuff so I want something with a pretty decent Megapixal..as mentioned, that 2.2 seems good although I might possibly drop to 2 if there is a good deal out there on one, but the 2 mp is kinda of an older standard out there and low in the barrel as well as the 2.2 is as well but keep suggestions coming :-)
  25. Thanks everyone for all the replies so far and hope to get some more, you are very helpful.
