  1. I am in need of the serial data cable that fits the V, III type. If anyone has a spare, let me know Matt
  2. Heres my trusty subaru, it doesn't look like much but I went up the road a ways and decided to back up and almost made it, if only I had more ground clearance, but I did end up making it out without any help. My wife wasn't too happy though, she told me not to take the road.......
  3. ah, you chaged your post right as I was posting, mine, now I feel a bit unsmart.
  4. Please dont take this in the wrong way, but I have heard otherwise, I can kind of prove it too, eh, at least I think. If you go to your map setup, you can have mulitple maps loaded (roads and rec, metroguide). if you hit menu, you can tell it which maps to display. Another feature is to turn all loaded maps and work off basemap, all the POI is still there, just like normal. It was my understand that the factory maps are unchangeable and will always be there. That is why this update is a bit confusing, maybe a phone call to garmin is in order.
  5. I'm wondering if anyone out there can explain what the POI update is, is it just marine stuff or POI all over US? It also says that all the previous POI is erased when you load this, does this mean you only have marine POI now? Any info would be appreciated.
  6. I would look into a Subaru, no matter what model you choose, they all have basically the same engine (2.2, 2.5, or 3.0) and same all wheel drive system. I have owned 3 and have had nothing but good luck. I have a Legacy GT, love it. Their new Forester XT has 210 HP and 235 LBS torque. You can't beat the value, lower to mid 20's.
  7. It is the new 5 Watt Luxeon star LED light from Surefire, it is the most incredible thing. Here is a link if you want to see it. Surefire L4 Lumamax The other is the Arc LSH-P, also an LED but has the Luxeon 1 watt LED. Here it is: Arc LSH These are superior to incandesent lights, much more effecient, small extremely bright and they have a pure white light.
  8. Heres what I use Night Caching; GPS: $400 Digital Camera: $300 Columbia Boots: $150 Columbia Coat: $250 Hat: $15 Gloves: $60 Headlamp: $40 Flashlight: $160 Pants: $20 Shirt: $5 Socks: $1 Extra Flashlight: $100 Phone: $150 Swisstool: $80 Backpack: $60 Grand Total=$1761
  9. You need city select version 5. Metroguide 5 doesn't have the routing algorithms built into them, so if it wont work.
  10. The garmin 12 (at least I think it was, I know it was one of my units I owned) had that issue when it first came out, they fixed it with a firmware upate
  11. Believe it or not, I can get 3d (medium signal from4-5 sats) in my basement, with no windows. I was amazed. I will also say that I have used both quad and patch (45XL, III,III+, V,60C, Legend, 12) and used an external patch (gamin GA27) and it blows away both of the buit in ones. I tried it while hiking a few times just to see how it compared, it rarely lost locks, even in heavy cover. My advice is no matter which one you get, get one with an external connection, just my opinion.
  12. no, I had it set to not turn off and it stayed on for a split second and then kinda of just faded away, not a harsh off, but slowly. I thought to myself, dang, it died.
  13. Fire eater, PM me and I will let you know a place that probably has them in stock.
  14. I have noticed 2 problems that repeat themselves. 1. if you add a point on the calandar in the future, no matter what you do, you can't remove it. 2. on the compass page with an active route or goto, the red arrow comes and goes at it pleases. Has anyone else experienced this?
  15. I had the same thing happen with my 60C, it just turned itself off, but it was right after I had loaded some mapsource maps in.
  16. I would vot for a 60C. I previously owned a III, III+, and V. The only thing I could miss is the ability to sit on a dash by itself with no mount. The 60 is odd shaped but with a mount, works fine. The battery life is great also. With the added memory and color screen, it makes the mapping readbility much easier too. 60C paired with city select Version 5 makes an incredible combo.
  17. I finally couldn't wait anymore and just ordered a 60c instead of the cs, I won't need the extras anyway. I am just wondering if all you 60 owners can tell me how nice the colors are with moderate light and no backlight? Are they colorful? or too dark? Most of the color LCD products I have used were usually not very colorful unless you have the backlight on. Any input would be appreciated, if anyone can post pics, that would be cool too.
  18. HHHm....I would tend to steer clear of those, from what I have heard they aren't as "druable" as their other models, and they are not waterproof either, the Garmin techs told me they would be hesitant to even use them in the rain at all. They are great for the car though, my friend has one, but for geocaching, I would recomend a more durable model.
  19. I use WAAS when using my V in the car but when it is combined with heavy treee cover and bad reception, it seems to throw my reciever off more. It is at least useful in open areas or cars, mine does great with external antenna in thte car. Sometimes I use it caching, but it seems to work better in the woods without it.
  20. Alright, I guess I haven't done enough research. No prob.
  21. Does anyone have a MCX to BNC adapter they would be willing to part with?
  22. No, a guy I know that sells marine equipment got them, he doesn't do a lot with handheld units.
