  1. Wow, the solution comes just as fast! I was using the "Search from my home location" option. Once I changed that to "search from postal code" it worked properly. Thanks again for the quick reply and helpful link!
  2. lol, that was fast. Thanks, I'll have a read through that one.
  3. Is there a tutorial or write up on how to properly use the PQ search engine? No matter how simple or complex I make my queries they always show '0' results. Not sure what I am doing wrong on this one, but if someone could point me towards a tutorial or some source of information that will help me correct my search parameters I would greatly appreciate it. I have used the forum search but did not really find what I am looking for except to not make the search have too many options. Thanks.
  4. One of the huge benefits for me is the ability to download the GPX instead of the LOC files. I have heard horror stories about getting the LOC files to work correctly with some models of GPSr with crashes, lockups etc, so I won't go anywhere near them. I have too much time invested into my T-400 to risk a crash and start-over. The premium account allows you to download the GPX which works great for me. I tried a pocket query but it returned 0 results. I have to go back and figure out what I did wrong.
  5. That's fantastic! This is something that should be instilled in all children. Teaching today keeps access open tomorrow.
  6. I have considered that I may not spot it, but the original cache to which I am referring has enough clues in other people's logs that it should not be a problem (famous last words). Reading the FULL log reports prior to attempting to find it would have saved me some time on this one. I have a much better idea of what I'm after now. Definitely searched on try #1 if 40 minutes of groping around in a stand of conifers in the dark of night can be called searching DNF has been logged.
  7. No worries .... thus are the tadpoles schooled I think if nothing else it will help me track my success ratio and hone where needed.
  8. Ah, okay, good advice. Thanks for the feedback guys. The reason I asked is I was searching at night for a simple 1/1 cache (albeit a very small, black container) and I know I can locate it during light hours if I go back to the spot, but as you pointed out the DNF log serves other purposes. Cheers.
  9. When I go searching and do not find the cache, should I log is as a DNF if I still plan on going back and attempting it again? My instinct is to not log anything and just go back and look again. It seems silly to log a DNF and then 2 days later log it as found. Your advice is appreciated.
  10. I'm a n00b so my goals aren't all that lofty by some standards, but my main goal is to incorporate Geocaching into my regular fitness routine and to find as many back country caches as I can. I only have a few finds so far but they have been in the forest and I really have no interest in finding "city" caches unless they are in a wooded park or ravine. I'm all about the outdoors and getting out of the city as often as I can 100 finds would be acceptable.
  11. x2 I just got a Triton 400 too and not all the menu options were there until I updated it. I like it though, works pretty good.
  12. Well, being so new to this and having only found 2 caches so far, my first attempt was a good old fashioned n00b hazing. My son and I were looking for our first find in an off-leash dog area in a huge urban forest. I entered the coordinates and hints with painstaking diligence and we set off to find our treasure. I entered the info inside the house with no satellite lock and didn't think much about it. Knowing the general area I did not turn on my GPSr until we were within a couple hundred meters of the location. I then found to my horror that the GPSr reported the location as being some 65km east of us! Not deterred I rebooted it and low and behold it was now 3 km to the west of us! Getting closer. Well after tossing around several theories, all of which blamed Magellan directly, we tried to find the cache without GPSr. To make a long story short, we got questioned by muggles, made a keen spectacle of ourselves stomping around a clump of trees and to make matters worse we both stepped in dog doo. I later discovered that I had used the wrong datum on my GPSr and the poor thing had no idea what I was on about. I have it figured out now and happy to report I am much more discreet and no longer look for treasure in doggy doo minefields. Definitely a D'Oh moment. Glad to have that one out of the way Edit: We never did find that cache!
  13. For me it is a combination of my real name - Lorne and Linux. Hence - Lornix I have been a professional web developer for the past 13 years and a few years back I lead a charge to get our office work stations all switched to Linux from Windows. In the end my campaign was lost but it was a glorious battle none the less. One of our programmers dubbed me Sir Lornix and it just kinda caught on. I shortened it to just Lornix and I use it on pretty much every forum I prowl - about a half dozen or so.

  15. Thanks for the welcome! n00b to GPS and Geocaching, but as an avid off-roader I have wanted a GPSr for a few years now. An excellent enhancement to the old back road maps for sure. Sometimes those old trail heads are grown over and can be very difficult to find a second time. The GPSr takes care of that. The wife just got me a Triton 400 and I have basically lived in the thing since Christmas. Found my first 2 caches and am completely hooked on Geocaching already. I have another half-dozen loaded into my unit and ready for adventure. There are some 4x4 groups near me that do back country geocaching, so I am looking forward to that too. This is a great way to get some fresh air, get away from the computer, and get some much needed exorcise. Thanks for all the help in getting our fat butts off the couch I guess I should mention that I hail from Surrey BC Canada.
