Well it's a free World, just don't blame Garmin if your GPS locks up while doing something critical like uploading the next firmware thus turning it into an expensive paperweight. Personnally I would never put beta software on anything that was important to me such as a device I was relying on to navigate me from A to B. ------- jeremyp The second ten million caches were the worst too. http://www.jeremyp.net/geocaching
  4. It's come up in the general forums before: the general feeling was that caches should *never* be buried. I think it would be incredibly difficult to persuade land owners to allow caches on their land if it meant people digging holes all the time. ------- jeremyp The second ten million caches were the worst too. http://www.jeremyp.net/geocaching
  5. Wow! I'm glad I asked the question now. I was actually more concerned that *all* the money in the H&J fund was going to their parents. Generally, I dislike giving money to "single issue" funds like this. Whilst H&J's parents obviously need as much help and support as they can get in order to come to terms with their tragedy, the major difference between their case and anybody else who has lost a child in similar circumstances is that their story has been splashed all over the media, so are they more deserving than a family that has lost a child in a drunk driving accident? I don't know. Anyway, the official fund sounds like a deserving case as does the NSPCC. There's about £2 of mine in the cache and there is *no way* I want to see it supporting any attempt to name and shame paedophiles. If you choose to go that route, please take £2 out for me and put it in an NSPCC charity box. ------- jeremyp The second ten million caches were the worst too. http://www.jeremyp.net/geocaching

  8. quote:Originally posted by dylanhayes:'Home goal' is the goal a team defends. If anybody has a better term for this please tell me, as I'm not well versed in sporting terminology. You could have said the evens are defending Arthur's Seat or possibly they are playing North to South which would be the equivalent of when a football commentator says "England are playing right to left" (as you see the match on a telly). I guess that makes me an attacking mid fielder rather than a defender. ------- jeremyp The second ten million caches were the worst too. http://www.jeremyp.net/geocaching

  11. I think we need a definitive statement from the referee. The term "home goal" is a little ambiguous, although it does sound a bit like "own goal" which is looking quite appropriate at this time. ------- jeremyp The second ten million caches were the worst too. http://www.jeremyp.net/geocaching
  12. I also had the impression that reception with a Vista is not as good as reception with my old Summit. If you're using it to navigate in the car, the best way I found is to plan your route in advance and create a waypoint at each turning which tells you what to do. For example, if coming to Reading out of London I'd put a waypoint at M4 Junction 11 which says "R A33" which means "turn right onto the A33." Also, the cigarette lighter power cable is essential at night as it allows you to keep the backlight on all the time. ------- jeremyp The second ten million caches were the worst too. http://www.jeremyp.net/geocaching

  15. I'd be very careful about running scripts like R&L's on a large scale. It probably wouldn't take many parallel instances to kill the web site. Fortunately, there is now an official version of the custom part which I have tested and it seems to work OK. ------- jeremyp The second ten million caches were the worst too. http://www.jeremyp.net/geocaching

  17. quote:Originally posted by chuffer:It would seem to me that these type of multipart caches are a considerable variation from the the standard style of normal (or virtual) caches and as such would perhaps benefit from being listed seperately from the 'standards'. When you create a cache you specify whether it is a multipart cache or a virtual cache. I think we need maybe a new category called 'sub-cache' which means that it is a cache that needs to be solved to find another cache. ------- jeremyp The second ten million caches were the worst too. http://www.jeremyp.net/geocaching
  18. The ideal way to do it would be to have a database and some cgi or other server side scripting to populate it when you fill in the form and also to create the HTML for display. I could put a prototype up on my site quite easily as it has mysql support 'built in'. I expect the geocacheuk site has something similar. 20. Who are the approvers? They have been strangely silent on this issue. I completely disagree with their decision with respect to these caches as do some other people apparently so I'd like to see them try and justify it. I for one see absolutely no reason why there shouldn't be a number of separate virtual caches contributing clues to a final normal cache. Apart from the fact that imposing rules against this sort of thing is just the thin end of a nasty beurocratic officious wedge, there is the practical consideration that each clue gets its own separate downloadable waypoint on geocaching.com. The argument about the number of caches in London is a totally separate issue. Personally I think it is an interesting enough place to be able to handle many more caches than are there already. ------- jeremyp The second ten million caches were the worst too. http://www.jeremyp.net/geocaching
  21. quote:Originally posted by Team Blitz:Does anyone know why Dan and Pid use the "Watch out, it's a golfcourse" signoff or is this some story that everyone knows except us! Is anyone else wondering about this? You know how they only go in straight lines... Well, one time on the straight line between them and the cache was a golf course. Not quite as dramatic as men with big guns, but you get the idea. ------- jeremyp The second ten million caches were the worst too. http://www.jeremyp.net/geocaching
  22. quote:Originally posted by The Hornet:I gathered all the necessary data on Wednesday and placed the cache in its hiding spot. I then spent Wednesday evening composing the cache pages. Unfortunately, in my view, the administrators are refusing to allow them to be approved in their current form. They are insisting that I combine them all into a single "multi location" cache similar to The London Pilgrimage by Tuna & Daoloth and Safari by Lushington. I have completed and enjoyed all of those other caches mentioned and I believe that both kinds have their merits. This has been discussed at length in the thread started by McDehack. So my question to you all is: Should I be allowed to submit my series of 6 virtual / 1 real caches as they stand or should I have to combine them into a single "multi-cache"? I am not asking which is best, that's impossible to answer. It's just a question of choice. It's impossible to answer as you say. Therefore I think you should be allowed to post the cache(s) in any way you see fit. They're your caches, you are the one who did the groundwork for these. If the approvers are trying to stop you based on content, they are totally out order in my opinion (apologies to the approvers if I am wrong and they have a legit reason). There are plenty of precendents for multiple virtual caches leading to a single real cache many of which are extremely good e.g Sherlock and Rainbow. If the approvers start censoring caches simply because they don't come up to some sort of (unpublished) ideal standard, then people will just stop placing caches and it will kill the sport. ------- jeremyp The second ten million caches were the worst too. http://www.jeremyp.net/geocaching
