  1. Dumb question, but how would you do that??? I mean it looks for the gpsr, how would you tell it to install the updates to the card in a reader vs the unit? Mapsource can see both GPS units & removable drives. When transferring maps in mapsource in the box that shows the connected device it will show the card reader instead.
  2. Decided to try this because it might come in handy, but I get an error message about the file not being a valid Garmin web link extension file. I'm running mapsource 6.15.5
  3. To see if your unit is in Battery saver mode, goto: Main Menu, Setup, system, Check and see if the top drop down menu(GPS) is set to normal or battery saver mode. Another thing to check is if the unit is set to the correct datum, WGS 84. You can check that from: main menu, setup, units, then check the datum is on WGS 84.
  4. I use this all the time, and wish garmin would just remove the option for hiding individual segments & just have the show/hide entire mapset option on the main screen. The individual segment option may have worked in the past when units only had 8-64mb of map storage, but now seems silly with people loading entire mapsets at once with hundereds of segments.
  5. You didn't say what version of Internet explorer you are using, If I'm not mistaken you need IE7 or newer. If you don't want to upgrade IE you could just download Firefox web browser and give it a try. I have no problems using the plugin in firefox.
  6. A unit like your gps72 gets its elevation reading from gps data, so if you don't have a very strong signal it won't be very accurate. My 60Cx computes it's elevation the same way, the worst I've seen is within 150ft of actual, most of the time its within 50ft. If I have very good signal its usually within 10-20ft. Some units have a barometric altimeter, such as the 60CSx. These units will have a much more accurate elevation reading that doesn't jump around so much. it requires some calibration(known elevation or pressure) or can be set to auto calibrate(which I think averages in the GPS elevation).
  7. The 60Cx doesn't have an electronic compass, so you need to be moving 2-3mph or faster for the compass screen to work. Now if you had a 60Csx this model has the electronic compass so as long as it's calibrated it will work correctly even standing still.
  8. Sounds like you are looking for a good cheap option, I would say the Garmin Etrex Venture HC. It has a newer high sensitivity chipset, good battery life, easy to use, color screen, 24mb map storage, & is very compact. You can find one online for around $130. Since you are not interested in any of the at home ability's I wasn't going to mention this units USB connection, but Decided to anyway because it makes updating this units software much easier. You can buy the Garmin etrex H with a similar chipset, no color screen & even less features, but this unit uses a serial connection to the PC and doesn't include the cable. This unit is only about $30 less than the Venture HC, so it would seem silly to buy this model.
  9. I use FizzyCalc to convert any coordinates, it's a very small program I run on a flash drive so I can use it on any PC. http://www.fizzymagic.net/Geocaching/FizzyCalc/
  10. Works fine here. a side note though, the maps redraw rate was very slow when I first tried using the newer version. After trying it now it seems much much better.
  11. I think this maybe how the data for your area was collected. I noticed the change for V6 to V7 of city select, I believe this is when Garmin first started using Navteq data for maps. I was really sad seeing google switch to Tele atlas data, in my area Navteq is much more accurate. At least for now garmin is sticking with Navteq.
  12. I remember back when I was using Metroguide/city Select V6 and noticing all the roads would have angles between blocks where they should just run straight. If it was a perfectly East/West road & you were traveling West, one block it would point slightly SW, the next block it would point slightly NW, but never straight. Some roads were also off in position by 10-30ft, which you would notice when zoomed in. I upgraded to City Select 7 and all these strange angles were gone & every Mapset since then have displayed roads straight like they should(also VERY close if not spot on to actual position).
  13. Wow, thanks for posting the fix, I had my browser starting displaying in this strange click view one day for no apparent reason. I fixed the issue by clearing my browsers cache, but its nice to know there is another way to switch back.
  14. If I'm not mistaken I don't think spanner works with the etrex models, but there is another alternative. you can use Franson GpsGate. Also Spanner doesn't work with windows Vista, but GpsGate does.
  15. As you already know the 60CSx has the altimeter and compass, but the 60Cx doesn't. Some people like the electronic compass, others don't. I have the 60Cx because after having a few units with the Compass I realized I rarely used the thing & I would be better off putting the extra money toward maps. Both of these models use the SirfIII chipset, which is very good at getting/holding signal in poor signal areas(deep woods, around large buildings). They also have a Micro SD card slot for map storage. These X models replace the older Discontinued 60CS & 60C, which weren't as good in the woods and only had 64mb of internal map storage.
  16. I see you posted the same time I did, I figured it out just read the post above for the "fix". Basically it was caused by user error and the useless hide gps detail option(Ctrl+G).
  17. Searching google more I found this post: http://ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=141801 All I needed to to was hit Ctrl+G(show or hide map detail) to fix the problem. alternatively you can go into the view menu and click "Hide GPS Map Detail". I had been using Ctrl+F to open the find menu, I must have accidentally hit Crtl+G instead before I closed the program. All I can say is I see no reason to have this option at all. I already have a no map option under my map selection drop down menu and I can easily set the detail to lowest for a very similar effect. Garmin if your listening please remove this worthless option.
  18. I was using mapsource today and it was working fine as usual. I closed the program because I needed to run to the store, when I tried using it again when I got home I lost all my map detail. I have the detail set to highest, but it displays like its set to lowest. If I switch mapsets between city navigator or topo2008 it stays the same. if I switch the detail to lowest it just shows less city "dots". if I zoom in all I can see is major highways, no other map info shows up. I also have another mapset, WI snowmobile trails 2009 and it also is lacking all detail now. I did nothing for this to happen, only closed the program. I decided to try and upgrade to the latest version of mapsource, but it didn't help at all. I guess I could try system restore or uninstalling/reinstalling all my maps, but I would prefer not to. Anyone else have this issue or know why this happened? a quick google search shows this has happened to a few others too, but was of no help finding a cure.
  19. The City Navigator NT maps, yes. But, the non-NT maps have the smaller segments. Yes you are right the NT map have even larger segments(my state is one segment), but the non-NT versions also use much larger segments than the old city select did. Besides NT maps are NOT compatible with the older units so I didn't even mention them. For my state(Wisconsin) using City Select I could load 3/4 of the state or just select the small segments along a route and have more than one state loaded. you can't do this with the newer larger segments. City Navigator 2008(non NT) My state is 4segements, I can only load 2 segments to my legendC before the unit is full. City select had at least twice as many segments making it much nicer software with such a low memory GPS. You probably don't notice the larger segments in the newer maps with your 60CS because it has 64mb of map storage, much more than the 24mb the Vista/LegendC has.
  20. The Vista C(and Legend C) only have 24mb of map storage, so upgrading the maps is out of the question since the newer city navigator uses much larger map segments than the older city select. Your best bet, buy a newer GPS.
  21. Does anybody here have the answer for this? I think Coggins may have given you the correct answer above. If I do as he stated(press Ctrl+U in mapsource)it brings up the unlock map screen.
  22. I really like the looks of the Delorme pn-20/pn-40 models and have been reading about them since the pn-20 first came out. From all that I have read over that time it seems that these units to indeed have more fragile screens than some other models out there. Do a quick google search you will find that there are quite a few other people who have had the exact same thing happen shortly after getting their new delorme gps. I'm still interested in the PN-40, but would hate to loose any of the durability that any of my past gps units have had.
  23. 10 meters is only around 30ft, which at that point you should be looking more at your environment, not your gps. There are a couple things you can do to get your gps to settle down once you get close. First thing to do is slow your walking speed to a crawl at about 75ft from a cache. Second thing is stop watching the compass pointer at anything under 50ft, you should be watching the distance to next data field since you already know the general area of the cache hide. 30ft from cache take a few steps and let your gps update your position. once your that close even a few steps can shave 10ft off the distance, presumably because your getting so close to the point and you will start to see the units current accuracy come into play. Depending on how you hold your gps can effect the accuracy too. I have found holding it upright, not level I get the best accuracy. P.S. Make sure you have the most current unit software and chipset software installed on your 60csx by running the Garmins webupdater.
  24. The VentureHC and the 60csx(or 60cx) all use newer high sensitivity chipsets, so they would be more comparable units. The older chipset that the 60c uses will have a harder time holding satellite lock under tree cover, and be much less accurate in those conditions. If I was choosing between the older 60c and a ventureHC I would buy the newer VentureHC just for the better chipset.
  25. I owned 6 different Magellan units over the years, and only one of them worked flawlessly. I came to the conclusion a long time ago they have major quality control issues, that's why you do see some happy owners when most have issues. I would never buy another magellan, unless it was very cheap/almost free.
