  1. Camelbak's web page http://www.camelbak.com/ has great articles on hydration. Some tables may be familiar to ex-GI's. Some have temp and fluid ratio type info. Two good rules of thumb- If you are thirsty, you are behind the hydratiion power curve, and if you pee and it isn't clear, drink more. Also if you have a headache while searching for that hard to find cache, you might need more water. This time of year it's important to drink fluids. As you exhale you are losing fluids, most folks don't put dehdration and cold together. Wasn't it Frank Zappa that mentioned dehydration? Watch out where the Huskies go..."
  2. Both Camelbak and Blackhawk Industries(Hydrastorm Systems) make excellent cleaning kits, collapsible reservoir dryers and the Camelbak cleaning tabs are great. I've used both for 10 years in both extremes-Missouri winters and the Persian Gulf in Summer. Watch the bleach- I'd use a slight amount of Dawn and hot water, works great. Cleaning in your shower may introduce unwanted germs even while cleaning. (dont want to flush your own system while trying to hydrate) Stick to the name brands for quality, the cost is worth it in the long run, mine have lasted many years with the original parts
  3. Like we said when I was flying, "it's the most fun you can have with your pants on". It's given me a chance to bond with my boys, get back in the woods, and my 13 year old son has something he loves.
  4. Synonym- bystander, viewer, member of the audience, observer, witness, watcher In my line of work we have rubber-neckers, the uh-oh squad, the oh-no squad, scanner land I'm no fan of Potter, but I do find if funny in regards to the unknowing C'mon, like others said, it's fun. What's the big deal
  5. "Grew up in Turkey" as a medic. Service spanned '74-78, '83 toRetired in 2003 USAF Security Forces, and was Flight medic on C-130(Tac-Evac) and 141
  6. My son carries a Motorola and I have a Rino 120, helps in the woods. I feel like a radio geek, 4 radios and the Rino. Comes in handy for parades, air shows, tournaments and other large events.
  7. Savoy 6- "A Team" leader in "The Green Berets". Saw it as a 13 year old, many years ago. Big fan of"the Duke"I'm not Special Forces, spent almost 25 yrs in USAF. but I used this as a business name too. (Had to come with something original) Have personalized Operation Enduring Freedom Plates with it too. My boys are my caching mates, Savoy 6-Alpha and Bravo. Now that I told you, I gottta kill you
  8. Reminds me of the story of the guide in Alaska with a 350lb client. The guide was about 175. The hunter asked the guide, "if I break my leg, how do you plan to get me out?" His reply, "just like when I get a moose, I'd make two trips". I carry a cell phone, and have local EMS numbers in phonebook as well as local air ambulances. Plus a personal "batltle pack" for longer treks.
  9. My 5 year old was with me for my first find. Don't know who was more excited. My 12 year old goes too and the threesome is great . My threshold is 3 caches or 3 hours. These guys are troupers, but as brothers do, bickering sets in. My 12 year old has been a big help, he thinks with the mind of a 12 yr old, doesn't have the restrictions we adults develop, talking about "outside the box". I use a Rino 120 and we have a radio for my son too. Gives him a sense of independence. It's a good way to teach kids too. Being methodical and not bashing about, attention to detail, being considerate of nature and keeping things intact, plus following directions and safety, sometimes history, outdoor skills.. The list goes on. I was a loner for many years and still yearn for solitude. I get that too caching. There are times I go alone or take my pup Ike with me.
  10. Having carried a gun for a living and living in a state that issues permits for concealed carries, which I supported- The one thing missing here is the issue of weapons retention. My father always said, "file down the front sights, it won't hurt so much when the other guy shoves it..."I hope you get the drift. I don't carry while caching.I like to spend the time with my kids. I can defend most threats with my wits. I always have an edged tool, notice not a weapon. If it gets to that point that I need to be armed with a firearm, God help us all. Is there really a threat or are we perceiving a threat? I live in the meth producing state for the US and we have pot growers in our state parks. It's like rough bars, I know my area and stay out of bad places. It's an emotional issue and a matter of personal choice. There is no right or wrong. Stay Safe- we all need to come back and log those caches, not get booked or bagged and tagged
  11. C'mon, this isn't the Bushido code, then a weapon like a katana is necessary for sepiku(hari-kari) for violating the code.. Common sense, a sense of humor, and use all senses. There I've put in my three "sense". I like the idea of a code, not the Magna Carta. But hey, I'm a beginner
