  1. Another thing that you might consider is one of the PC-Mobile re-radiating antennas. They operate from thier own batteries; people on here have had good things to say about them. They run about $47.00. Tom
  2. I'm guessing that it is the one from pc-mobile.net I think that it's the only battery operated one available. gpsinformation.org has a review of it. Tom DOH!! Sorry Stan! pc-mobile was right there in your post. Hire the handicapped--- t
  3. In addition to what was said about turn information, don't worry about it if you do blow a turn. The unit will immediately recalculate your route and give you another turn to get you back on course. This works really well. Tom
  4. Dan, I an using a GPSmap60c, and just tried adding a decimal in the comments field on the gpsr, and it took it ok, and I have the 60c selected in EasyGPS. The only other reciever entered into EasyGPS is my old eTrex, decimals and commas worked with it in EasyGPS. This seems to have started after I downloaded and installed the upgrade. Hope this is the info that helps--- Tom
  5. I keep our river boat ramp database in EasyGPS, and have noticed since I updated it that I can no longer put decimal points and commas in what I enter in the comments field. Rather, I can enter them when I edit the waypoint, but they are gone after hitting the "OK" button. We enter the river miles of the waypoints here so that we can sort them by ascending or descending order. Anybody know how to correct this? Is it even possible to correct this? Tom
  6. Have you noticed the blue circle on the map around the location pipper when you zoom in? That is "The Circle of Accuracy". It automatically takes into account the accuracy of your maps and of your satellite fix to determine its size. I have noticed being "off-road" as described, but the road that I am on is always within the circle. Try this; drop the reciever deeper into your car to reduce signal strength, and watch the circle grow larger, then bring it back up to the windshield again and watch the circle grow smaller. The circle is also MUCH larger using the base map as opposed to using detail maps. Tom
  7. CenTexDodger, Yes, I have since loaded CitySelect detail maps, and yes, I lost the tide predictions. I did find the spot on Garmin's website to reload them, too. Tom
  8. Have you tried this? Click Start> All Programs> Acessories> Program Compatibility Wizard. I have not had to use it, but it is supposed to help you configure older programs to work with XP. Would you post what works? I'm curious! Tom
  9. Right after I got my 60c I was in New Orleans, and found out by accident that it DID displat tide tables even without BlueChart! If you move the arrow around the map and select a costal location, it will display tide station information up and down the coast from the selected location for quite a distance. All this from the base map, mind! For a demo, select something in the Bay of Fundy, or Penobscot Bay in Maine--- Tom
  10. I bought one of the Gilssons from GPSgeek on eBay, and I use it on the boat at work, it sits outside on a second deck handrail to get a clear view of the sky. We are always out in the middle of nowhere on the Lower Mississippi, and I'm always showing an accuracy of +/- 6 to 10 feet. Tom
  11. They do work, but watch it on price! When I was looking for one for my cell phone, I was seeing prices ranging from $10 ebay on up to $74 in the OfficeMax catalog! Tom
  12. Biker39, I have CitySelect on the 60c, I've had it for about three weeks now. Tom
  13. On the day before Thanksgiving, I had to drive south about 50 miles to pick up my mother; the plan was to leave from our house early on Thanksgiving morning with Mom for my sister’s in Racine, Wi. When I left home it was snowing lightly, and I really did not think too much about it. Once I crossed US 30, things started getting worse, and the farther south I ventured, the worse it got! I was just north of Mom’s town (I could see the last stop light) when the right rear tire dropped in a pothole, and the rear end started coming around in the 3” to 4” of slush that was on the road. I was trying mightily to gather it back up, but I slid across the center line and was looking at the front end of a Dodge Ram pickup not too far off, but thankfully not moving too fast. At this point I just went “Ah, S#$*” and deliberately put it in the ditch to avoid an accident. My first move was to establish that the car was OK. It was, but I was not getting out without help. Doing a quick search on my Garmin GPSmap60c revealed the phone number of a gas station just into town that had a wrecker, and I called them on the cell phone. When they answered the phone, the wrecker driver had just made it back and they said that I was #3 on the “ditch list”, and he should be to me within a half hour. They showed up after about 25 minutes, and had me on the road within 45 minutes! The trip back was uneventful after that; thanks Garmin! Tom
  14. Check the eBay store gpsgeek. They had thier new cases for the 60c available the last time I looked; they were about $15. Tom
  15. I just purchased City Select for my Garmin GPSmap60c and I'm impressed with the auto routing. I experimented with it on the road; I set a destination and then deliberately drove past the turns. It automatically recalculates the route after missed turns and will keep doing it! Pretty cool! Now I just have to get a good bracket to fit my Miata. Tom
  16. Thanks folks! It sounds good, think I'll download the demo next time I'm home and try it out. Primarily, what I'm interested in using it for is "cleaning up" our waypoint database for the boat ramps and fleet offices where we do our crew changes for work. I had originally waypointed these from the boat and then projected them to the likely spot on the bank using Streets & Trips, so they are only within about 1/4 mile or so. I have been taking an accurate reading any time we crew change at the projected waypoints, but we have about 65 of them and it will take a looong time to get them all in person. Being able to do what it does from satphotos should work well; I'd think that a concrete boat ramp or a shell parking lot should show up well in the photo. Thanks again. Tom
  17. - On a flight from Newark to Ottawa the pilot noticed I had a GPS and said out loud that he was glad at least someone on the plane would know where we were going Ahh, pilot humor! Tom
  18. I've had excellent luck with GPSGeek.Thier cables are durable, and the fact that they are half the cost of Garmin's is not a detriment! The external antenna they sell is a fifth of the cost of Garmin's and it will max out most of the available satellites. I'm a repeat customer; I don't think you can go wrong with thier stuff. Tom
  19. Thanks folks! I e-mailed PlanetGPS to find out what the shipping is, that's the best price that I've seen. Thanks for the replies; I had done a search but didn't come up with anything. Guess I'll have to refine my search skills--- Tom
  20. I'll be looking to buy City Select for my 60c within the next two weeks, and was wondering if anyone had a suggestion as to who might have the best price out there. Does anybody have any suggestions? Tom
  21. I'm really looking forward to seeing how the 60c does compared to the eTrex in Italy in March. Rome was the only city where the eTrex was really usable, I'm hoping for better results with the 60c's antenna. Tom
  22. HMMM, I just finished up two weeks in town. Came back to work at Harahan to a boat in the shipyard with broke gearboxes--- Spent two weeks almost under Huey Long Bridge. Tom
  23. Truly, it is worth going to a local bookseller and getting the magazine and reading the interview. Haven't heard anything on that--- I'm sorry, but it is not one of this month's linked articles. If it had been, I would have posted the link. My apologies. Tom
  24. NightPilot, Do you fly to oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico? Tom
  25. The eBay store gpsgeek should have neoprene cases available this month. Check out thier store; good stuff at reasonable prices. Tom
