  1. I don't much care for any of the swag that we find in caches. We are in to geocaching for the hunt... and getting us to outdoor places that we would not usually have visited. However, I've seen kids dig through caches like they had found a treasure chest. That golf ball that I care nothing for entertains a kid for hours. I've also read cache logs where a kid found "neat rocks." We read through hundreds of logs before we went out to shop for some swag, and bought items that seemed to be kids favorites. If we can make a kids happy with an item that cost a dollar or two, I feel we have succeeded. There is one exception to our finding swag that we found useful - we were hiking a nature trail with the dogs. After about three dumps, apiece, we were out of our Bags-on-Board. The next cache we found had a roll of the Bags-on-Board in it as swag. Halaluya... or course the dogs didn't find the need to make us us any of them, finishing out the nature trail. Needless to say, we left the best swag in our day pack, to replace the bags. We also now carry a couple rolls of the Bags-on-Board in the day pack, in case of emergencies and as swag. Point is, one mans junk is another mans treasure...
  2. I just don't seem to have the same Oregon 400t as you do. I see no way to get a temperature on my unit. Must be a different version.
  3. Thanks. Updated with no problems on my Oregon 400t.
  4. I have used the Delorme Street Atlas, MS Streets and Trips, and CoPilot Live. Still have all three on the laptop and use them in the motor home. Each has its good points... and bad. CoPilot Live was not in you question, but it is great for large rigs as it routes according to weight limits on bridges, height restrictions, etc... Delorme Street Atlas has what I think are better driving directions. I like the fact that it shows the next two turns. Better direction graphics. Also, like the night screen better. MS Streets and Trips shines on trip planning. I find that it is much easier to map out routes, find POI, and work with the on screen map. It has improved it the past few years on routing and is only slightly behind Delorme's routing.
  5. So does that mean that we are to be called Geotics, here on Earth?
  6. Thanks for the history lesson - I'm getting ready to start hiding my first caches and what you said make sense, and should make assigning a size much more accurate.
  7. It seems that muggles are already getting more zealous in reporting suspicious activities... but just wait till a few terrorist bombs do go off in malls and parking lots. We should all do our part to talk with LEOs, congress men, and other authoritative persons and put in a good word about geocaching. As the old saying goes - an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!
  8. So sorry to hear about the first cache... now you're hooked Welcome!
  9. I like your username;) Welcome...
  10. Welcome! Just getting started in geocaching?
  11. Could all of you pitch in a few hundred dollars to buy me a new set of reading glasses? Please send donations to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20500 I read the OP you refer to, about the request for donations in his cache. I agree with the reviewer, Groundspeak, and everyone else that thought it was a simple matter, NO SOLICITING. I also think you are a great writer, but I usually pass right by long post that have multiple topics, or combine multiple post, such as this one. I like to research the facts before I jump in - the donation seeker lived in a house worth some $190k, $1400 and some $ in taxes paid last year, owned by Nancy (probably his mom). I could go on and give you his name, address and a lot of other info... but even with all that, I still didn't gather enough information to reply to his OP. Why did I chose to reply to this post? I don't know... maybe I just don't like post that suggest that I shouldn't reply to a post without giving it some thought and showing a little compassion. On edit: Removed the POLITICAL reference (sic)... so please don't think you're sending ME donations if you really mail a check to the above address
  12. Patience in those parking lot caches - I have sat on a lamp pedestal for 15 minutes waiting for traffic to clear. For those guard rail caches, I grab a bag and pick up trash. Some of the caches I just try to look like I belong. But the biggest thing that help us is... we walk our dogs - the perfect cover
  13. Just got mine done today. Put in Thursday evening and it took effect today - http://support.Groundspeak.com/Support/ind...kbarticleid=267
  14. My wife is as involved as I am. We head out with the dogs and have a grand ole time. I have in a user name change request, at her request, to reflect the fact that we are both involved. No sneaking off for the weekend here... she has her coat on before I finish tying my shoes
  15. I started on Christmas Day. Up to 32 now and couldn't quit if I wanted... the wife would divorce me Welcome to the addiction..................
  16. Wife swap? Mine cooks well... looks pretty and earns more in a month than I do in a year... Not a chance! My wife wanted a laptop for Christmas, so that she didn't have to keep bothering me to use OURS. And for her birthday, yesterday, a waffle maker - boy, they were good this morning
  17. You guys are so lucky! My wife loves geocaching... I pick up the GPSr and there she is, in the car before I can get my boots on We get on the trail and the next thing I know, she hands me the dogs' leashes, and takes the GPSr And what really sets me off is the inevitable "I found it" from her once we get to the cache coordinates Oh, and try to just go out to a quiet dinner... no, she meets me at the back door with the Garmin in her hand, asking if I have any caches loaded for the area around the restaurant I've tried trekking her through critter infested swamps. Long trails in freezing weather. Dark, spider infested holes............... I'm at a loss. HOW do you guys break your spouses from trying to take over your geocaching? HELP!
  18. I got the 400t for Christmas and am satisfied with the screen.
  19. DON'T DO IT! Like Lay's chips, one and your hooked
  20. Welcome! We started the addiction Christmas Day. Have now found about 20 caches and are looking to see if they have any GeoCacher Anonymous (GCA) groups in our area.
  21. When you find the cache, you have to (assuming you are in the geocache mode, and on the compass screen) hit the geocache symbol and select LOG ATTEMPT>FOUND. Now when you select SHOW FOUND, it will display the list of caches found. Let me know if that doesn't answer your question....
  22. Thanks for the question... I learned a lot from the answers you received. I had only been logging DNFs if I felt that there was a chance that the cache was missing. There were some caches that I did not search for very well - muggles around or areas flooded from all the rain we'd had - so I did not log a DNF. On your example above, putting in the DNF log that you were searching at night would sure help me if I went behind you and tried finding it at night also. Thanks again for the question.
  23. He that logs it first is the FTF... simple truth. The first one there just gets whatever goodies were left for the FTF... sit on it all you want.
