  1. Probably any palm with at least 2 megs should work. Of course the more memory the better.
  2. What they said and: Mapsource is Garmin's map managing software and in and of it's self doesn't include any maps. I think you can use it for managing wayponts and other stuff without maps. If I'm not mistaken you can down load it for free. I would down load it and give it a try tho some of the other software mentioned above would probably actually work better for what you need.
  3. Hi Phil this is Phil: If the 60csx is like my 76cs then I think you can. Unfortunately I don't have it or the manual with me right now so I cant confirm it or tell you how. Edited to add: Now that I've thought about it I think there is a setting to use "marine colors" but thats the only other choice. Again I'm trying to work from memory and mine doesn't always work too well.
  4. I don't know enough to give a meaningful reply but, that sounds like a good idea.
  5. That sounds like a cool idea. I wonder if it can be expanded to repeaters in outher parts of the world.
  6. I think the GPSr knows were you are in relationship to the cache it just dosn't know which direction you are facing. The GPSr can still be used to get a bearing to the cache. I recomend that you carry a magnetic compass with you. Use the bearing from the GPSr to find the direction, and use the compass to lead you to it. Well if you want to get all technical about it. BlueDeuce I hope that that didn't come off as me beeing a smart a__. I just think that it helps alot to carry the compass.
  7. I think the GPSr knows were you are in relationship to the cache it just doesn't know which direction you are facing or moving. I recommend that you carry a magnetic compass with you. Use the GPSr to get a bearing and distance to the cache, then use the compass to show you the direction to that bearing. Edited to: clarify my thoughts.
  8. Tn, Nc, and hopefully atl east one in Ny on the 8th of next month. Thats it so far.
  9. Haven't lost one cacheing(yet!) but I have lost two in the water while fishing. I've also lost an Amateur radio handy talky, two tackle boxes, and countless sun glasses and hats.
  10. Ok Honk! The mural was on a wall and the burnt out truck was on a mountain.
  11. It could also be that you may have to climb down a cliff or up a tree or cross a river or something. All stuff we would do as kids if mom & dad weren't looking but would get yelled at if we got caught, and all things most people wouldn't want their kids to do. Just a guess.
  12. I have a feeling that in this spot most gps and many other electronics would have been effected in some way or another.
  13. I was up on the mountain today where there are probably fifty transmitters, including a couple of TV stations, telephone, paging, public service, Ham radio repeaters and who knows what. All within ~1000 ft. radius. I had taken my 76cs with me to mark the location of a tower and when I was done I turned it off and put it in my pocket. Later I took it out off my pocket and it was back on. I turned it off again and ...... you get the idea. This kept happing and at least once it shut itself off. finally I had to take the batteries out to keep it off. After I left the area it worked fine.
  14. You'll also find that it takes you to a lot of great places you never knew existed, meet some interesting and probably nice people, learn about navigation, get some exercise, learn about local history,... I could go on but the main thing you're you'll probably find is that you're having a lot of fun.
  15. You don't really have to have a GPSr to start. In fact I've heard of people who don't use them at all and are quite successfully. What you could try while you're waiting is to look at caches in ares you are familiar with, read the description, study the maps on the page and I'll bet you'll find some that you can figure out where they are without a GPSr. Even though I had the GPSr before I started Geocaching I've found a few without even needing it. Welcome, Good luck, and yes it only gets worse from here on out.
  16. I'm not sure what a Z22 is but I have a Zire 31 and it works great. I think any palm will work as long as it's got at least a couple of megs of memory. I think I've got ~1000 caches in mine and it looks like it's using less than 2 megs.
  17. Cost: If you mean fees, ~14 bucks to take the test. That's it. Weight: About the same as a GPSr. Size: Ditto. Price: Starting around $100 New, Like GPSr you pay for bells & whistles but even a basic unit will have the features that you need.
  18. My impression is the reviews on amazon compare the garmin maps to some specialized topo products such as NG Topo and DeLorme. Compared to those it is not as good. Also if you are just going to use it on the PC those other are probably a better choice. However, The Garmin maps are the only ones you can download onto your GPS, so in that respect they are the only game in town. I have Topo USA and City Select, and I think they two compliment each other nicely. I took it (Topo loaded in my 60cs) into the mountains in New Mexico northeast of and it had good detail. i was very pleased with it. It did a good job for me but YMMV. You can go on the map viewer on the Garmin site and preview both the USA product and the 24k maps The Topo USA is based on USGS 100k Topos. They are old and dated in some areas (city streets) but they show good detail of natural features, campgrounds and such. However if the park service has moved park roads recently, those moves may not show up. I'll add that the Topo USA maps are not routeable but they cover the entire US and don't need to be unlocked . I think the 24k maps are routeable, but their coverage is limited and they have to be unlocked.
  19. this is pretty much verbatim what I would offer. Me too.
  20. You don't need to spend another $400~$500... Just sell what you've got on eBay, buy the new model and you're just spending another $75 - $100! The wife doesn't even have to know! Think she'll REALLY notice the "x" in the model name??? Probably wouldn't notice the "x" but since she balances the check book and such I'll guaranty she'd notice the hole in the checking account.
  21. I'll throw my two cents in and suggest the Ham radio also.
  22. Sounds like you're in the same boat I am. I have yet to figure out how to convince the wife that I need to spend another $400~$500 on a new GPS when I've only had this one for about a year.
  23. My log from a recent cache Hazards All Around Us Starting in or around September of last year and after three or four tries I finally found the first part. I found the second part twenty minutes later with no problem. The third part took at least five or six tries (there are always muggles here). I finally found it but I swear that wasn't there before. I swear it! I found the location for the fourth part ten minutes later but couldn't get to it because of muggles so I went back today and finally five or six months later I finished this one. I don't know why it gave me so much trouble except I swear that wasn't there before. Anyway took the travel bug and left a dory not quite an even trade I know but it was all I had. Thank for the great if aggravating cache. All of these location were in public places so I didn't spend much time each trip out.
