  1. Re: Vancouver, Washington A wood carving of an Indian head was constructed in Esther Short Park and donated to the city in 1974. It was removed in 1992 after substantial deterioration from the elements. I do not know if the statue was destroyed or put in storage somewhere in Clark County.
  2. I am still not getting confirmation, approval, rejection, etc. e-mails. One or two dribble in occasionally. It concerns me if someone wants a response to a question on one of my geocaches (i.e. "Should I be trespassing?") or if, gasp, there is a rejection of a waymark I would not know why. Otherwise, I have found a way around the on-going problem. However, it would be great to get all of my e-mails in a timely manner.
  3. I have an AOL account. Either AOL or Groundspeak (Waymarking/Geocaching) has a definite problem! I have not been receiving timely approval, rejection, etc. e-mails for several weeks now. A few e-mails have dribbled in but very late in arriving. I have found a way to circumvent the problem but it would be so much easier just to receive all my e-mails promptly.
  4. Yes ...Consistency ... (I see you also modified your previous post.) ....but you did reject my "Waymark" on June 1st of the "Chi Cheemaun" at dockside and my "Description" of the ferry instead of the terminal. So it will just sit there until someone else submits a better "Waymark" Why was this one rejected? It looks like a landing to me. It is a landing with an added bonus of having a ferry actually at it. If I posted just a ferry landing for the river ferries along the Mississippi everyone would think it was just a short boat ramp for launching boats, mine will have ferries in them too. Now getting it back on topic. I don't go back and try to fix those that came before I adopted the category though submitters have brought it up when they submit a less than complete waymark. I have had all the older ones pointed out which did not meet the requirements, I just reply the category is under new management and will require new waymarks to meet the standard. Resubmit your waymark and the Leader or someone else in the group will approve or reject it.
  5. When the Category is Ferry Landing/Terminal one should not submit a waymark with a photo of a ferry on a large body of water and no ferry landing/terminal in sight. The category is Ferry Landing/Terminal not Ferry Boat. This was only an example to make a point.
  6. I believe that one should submit quality waymarks with great photos (one, two or more), good information, and correct spelling, punctuation, and grammar. At the very least one should fulfill the requirements of the category. For example, when the Category is Ferry Landing/Terminal one should not submit a waymark with a photo of a ferry on a large body of water and no ferry landing/terminal in sight. The category is Ferry Landing/Terminal not Ferry Boat. If the requirements are not met, decline the waymark and politely explain why you are doing so. As to previous waymarks, do not delete them but send a note to the owner explaining the points that you would like them to correct or the photos that you would like them to submit. Consistency!
  7. WiFi is available at Multnomah Falls, Oregon. Just bring your laptop and enjoy the really spectacular view!
  8. If you start eliminating Boundary Increases and historical buildings in Districts you are going to eliminate some great historical buildings. If you combine Boundary Increases with the Original Locations even though they may be a mile or so apart (for example Bonneville Dam/Visitor Center and the Bonneville Fish Hatchery), you could list both coordinates, both set of photos, and both descriptions in a very, very long waymark. And you could require that the waymarker visit both locations before they received credit for the waymark. As for historic buildings in Districts you could list some or all of the historic buildings in logs under the category of Districts including the coordinates, photos and descriptions in a very, very long waymark. The waymarker could chose which of the historic buildings that they wish to visit in that District and get credit for the waymark. Both proposals would eliminate the problem of numbers. Is that what Waymarking is really all about? How many waymarks can I create? Who has created the most waymarks and where do I stand in that list. And not how many really great historic buildings can I share with another waymarker.
  9. I am not sure why Portland does not list the Couch Block on their website. If you look at Property Tax Page this property is listed an qualifying historic property. (The tax records don't match up with the addresses you gave but I think I have the right property) It is bounded on the north and south by non-contributing properties. This locaton is contained in Portland Skidmore/Old Town Historic District (even though not listed on Portland website it is within the boundary) It is not listed as individual site. The reason it has the plaque is because it is within the district boundaries and as indicated from the tax record it is a historic property within in the district. Don't get confused by the designation of Historic Landmark on the Portland site and think it is same as National Historic Landmarks. There are only 2 National Historic Landmarks in Portland one of which is the Portland Skidmore/Old town Historic District and the other being Pioneer Courthouse. edit to fix link Well, this could certainly get very complicated. I know that there is a difference between the city use of "Historic Landmarks" and the use of "National Historic Landmarks." I have only submitted historic buildings that have the designation "Historic Landmark" on the city lists of Historic Districts. I am not comfortable with either the Noncontributing or Contributing Structure under Resource Status even though it has eliminated some really great historical buildings (some even have the bronze plaques "This property has been placed on the National Register of Historic Properties by the U.S. Department of the Interior.")
  10. Is it physically within the geographic boundaries of a listed district? The Couch Block is located at 24-26 NW Second Avenue, Portland, Oregon in the same district one block east of The Merchants Hotel (1880) (1884) which is located at 123 NW 2nd Avenue. The Couch Block and the Merchants Hotel are located in the Portland Skidmore/Old Town Historic District (added 1975 - Multnomah County); Also known as Skidmore/Old Town Historic District roughly bounded by Harbor Drive (now called Naito Pkwy/Front Avenue), Everett, NW 3rd Avenue, and Oak Street, Portland (440 acres, 30 buildings, 1 object--White Stag Sign). Whereas the Merchants Hotel appears on the District List (http://www.portlandonline.com/planning/index.cfm?c=30429) the Couch Block is NOT listed with either the NRHP or the District. However it does have a bronze plaque: "This Property has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of the Interior."
  11. You have to ask yourself what is the point of Waymarking. Is it just to rack up numbers? I have created 18 historical geocaches. If you just want to rack up numbers, you do not want to do my historical geocaches. They are not easy geocaches with one or two exceptions. And all you get at the end is a small log sheet. However, if you want to learn about an area, you will learn with my geocaches. The same should hold true with waymarks. You should learn about a town or a district within the town. Think about the incredible buildings or objects that you will not be able to share with other waymarkers when you restrict the category. One of my districts may only one Historic Landmark in it that I wish to share with other waymarkers however another district may have several Historic Landmarks. Will they never be shared with another waymarker or, like Solomon, will I have to choose which one gets picked with the exclusion of the other great historic buildings. Once again, you have to ask yourself what is the point of this category. It should be fun. It should be the joy of sharing a special building or object.
  12. The Couch Block 1906 located at 24-26 NW Second Avenue, Portland, Oregon has a bronze plaque: "This Property has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of the Interior." However it does not appear on any lists either national or district. Can I create a waymark since it has a bronze plaque even though it is not on any lists?
  13. Well, I am going to make your discussion even more complicated if that is possible. I have found several historic buildings in Old Town/Chinatown, Portland, OR with bronze plaques stating that "This property has been placed on the NR of HP by the U.S. Department of the Interior." However, these buildings are not on the NRHP list nor are they included in the lists that the city maintains of Historic Landmark buildings and objects in the Historic Districts. Do I submit those buildings since there is a bronze plaque? Or do those buildings need to have both: appear on one or the other lists plus have a bronze historic plaque. And what about buildings that appear on one or the other lists but DO NOT have bronze plaques? Do I submit those buildings even though they do not have a bronze plaques that I can photograph and submit with my waymarks.
  14. Where's In A Name? In Waymarking, it is the last item in the last category.

  16. If you started asking questions as a verification, haven't you come full circle back to Virtuals? I really like Virtuals. The only thing I like about Waymarking is creating the waymarks. I have no interest in looking for waymarks. I wonder if anyone will be very interested in looking for my waymarks. I see a lot of waymarks being created but I wonder how many are actually being found besides the owner of the waymark.
  17. "Seems that the majority of Categories have the same basic requirement... Take a picture of yourself at the Waymark Often this is augmented with while holding your GPS or another item but not always. The 'Uploaded Image' in Waymarking is the equivalent of 'Sign the Logbook' in Geocaching." My reply: How do you upload an image? Someone suggested getting a disposable camera. How do you upload the photo that you took for a waymark from a disposable camera? Put the photo on a CD. Wouldn't that get rather expensive just to show that you were at a waymark. Well, one could purchase a digital camera. I didn't work for me. My computer would not accept digital photos so I purchased a laptop computer (also a photo scanner) as well as the digital camera to do Waymarking. Some owners do not mind when you put the requirements at the end of the page. Others do mind. So I get logs with no photos as the person did not realize that a photo was required. And then some owners require photos with a GPSr. And then other owners do not have any guidelines at all. If I require a photo for a waymark, I am concerned as the requirement is not there to back me up.
  18. re: "Scottsdale Arizona has artistic manhole covers as part of their public arts program." Seattle, Washington also.
  19. Re: Where's In A Name? waymark. I live in Vancouver, Washington (the other Vancouver). I will volunteer to locate, and take photos (with and also without GPSr) for any waymarker whose coordinate goes through the Multnomah County, Oregon, or Clark County, Washington area or the Columbia River Gorge (as far as east as Cascade Locks, Oregon/Skamania, Washington). I will send the historical, scenic or ??? information about the site and upload the photos (attachment) to you. So compute your Username into coordinates...
  20. I resize my digital photos to 500/375. I was tired of having the photos being rejected for a waymark so I devised those numbers. I have not tried to go higher.
  21. Statues should have more subcategories than just Lions and Musicians! For example, People, Animals, etc.
