  1. How the new system detects duplicates: The “Upload drafts” functionality from the new page detects duplicates based on the combined values of the Geocache Reference Code (GC Code), the date/time of the visit as well as the log type. Any drafts previously uploaded to the system (via the legacy drafts page or the new drafts page) will be ignored if the draft was subsequently deleted or promoted to a log. The only exception to this rule is if records were deleted via “clear all drafts” on the old page as we then no longer have any records of those drafts having ever existed.

I don't believe this is working. I uploaded a field note last week and then turned it into a log, today I thought I would try to see what would happen so I uploaded it again. Needless to say another field note appeared. If the logic you are describing is working correctly surely it shouldn't of appeared in my field notes?

    The cache in question is GC5M5KX and I'm uploading it using the following line;

    GC5M5KX,2017-06-24T14:07Z,Found it,""
  2.

    • Automatic prevention of duplicate draft creation on upload.

    I don't believe this functionality is working correctly. My field notes are now sitting in the region of 2,020. To offer some kind of explenation as to whats happened;

Last Friday I uploaded my field notes. I had around 400 to log.

During the week I found 27 caches.

I uploaded my field notes yesterday using the new page and didn't check the amount I had to log. Today I checked it and I have 2,020 to log. All of the logs I had field notes waiting for are now duplicated, whilst ones where I had already logged the cache have now reappeared.

It seems the system has decided to upload the whole file. As it would if I had 'Ignore logs from before xx/xx/xxxx' box checked on the old field notes page. However there is no such option so it can't be a mistake I've made.

Is there a quick way I can get this mistake rectified? I know that the system will tell me if I try to log a found on a cache I've already found, however with the logging page taking up to 30 seconds to load I realy can't wait that long for all 1,500 (or so) caches.

Also having done some more poking around I don't believe timestamps are working correctly.4dd88579-c0d2-4bbd-8ade-3edbbc279286.jpg

As you can see the cache was found at 1242 according to my geocache_visits file. Not the 0642 as the website claims, this obviously has an impact on the dates some of the caches appear in my field notes. The cache is in the london time zone as is the setting for my home timezone. so I'm not sure where this 6 hour difference has come in!

  3. Hiya,

When I go to https://www.geocaching.com/my/geocaches.aspx and select a day in the past to views the logs I posted that day the heading of the page comes up as

Your Geocaching Logs [invalid Resource Key: litForDate]
Although not a massive issue I thought I better point this little bug out.

Also is there anyway the date picker on this page can be changed? Having to wait for the page to refresh several times so I can go back a few months is just slow and rather tiresome!

    Thanks

  4. Hey all, just want to give you an update on this.

Our engineers fixed this bug yesterday. All new field notes will display correct times now. Field notes that were created before the fix will still display incorrectly due to how they were saved in the database.

But surely if you have managed to break all our previously uploaded field notes (before you made the change) you guys can fix them by making the relevant change to the time on the previous logs and then implement the fix? I'm not mightly keen on having 350+ field notes that will each have to be checked before I can log them.

EDIT: uploaded 4 field notes and they are showing the correct time and date.

  5. It would seem they are aware of the issue so hopefully they will fix it soon :)

    Hello Joe-

We are aware of the Field Notes issue. We apologize for the inconvenience and hope to get this resolved soon. Any information you can provide is helpful.

    Best regards,

  6. As an update I heard back from HQ they had this to say

    Hello Joe-

Thank you for contacting Geocaching HQ.

At the time you attempted use Geocaching.com's website or apps, we were experiencing technical issues. They have now been resolved. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for taking the time to let us know.

    Best regards,

    <Name Removed>

I have pointed out to them that the issue they seem to be refering to has nothing to do with what we are experiencing!

  7. I suppose a work around would be for me to set my timezone to 8 hours behind where I am. But that just feels like it wouldn't be a proper fix. Maybe someone from Groundspeak will let us know if this is some thing they can fix or not :)

  8. Hi Everyone,

Something strange has happened with my field notes over night. The times for all the logs has changed which has in some cases changed the date as well! My setings on geocaching.com still show the correct time zone for me. And the times in my geocache_visits.txt file are correct.

    0b88f13d-ea50-4148-89f9-0a50aa464317.jpg

Is this something anyone else is experiencing?

  9. I like others have said have no real interest in this list. Most of the people on my 'friends' list aren't really friends, infact some of them I've never met. That said I'm stioll going to give my opinion on the bits you suggested. But on the whole I feel this feature either needs massive improvement or scrapping altogether. I feel I should add I think it's important that geocaching.com does not attempt to become another social media site, there are enough of those out there already!

Ability to follow a cache placer and be alerted of new caches they hide

Not sure I would use it, there are no cachers I 'follow' in the sense I will go out and find any cache they set.

Ability to detect and add friends from other social media accounts

It depends on what you class as 'friends' I have several people on my facebook page that also have geocaching accounts, but I don't really care about their caching habits.

See nearby friends on the map

This one could be interesting, but I would be worried about people I don't want to knowing where I am having access to my location. I also don't like the idea of being tracked, although preasumably this would run through the App which I don't use anyway!

Get alerts or newsfeed content when your friends find caches or Trackables

Facebook for geocaching? I've had enough of the people who share the occasional find on Facebook. Not reaslly keen on hearing that my friend found 30 different caches in a series.

See which of your friends have found a cache or Trackable

Could be handy, It would be much more helpful if I could see a map showing caches which me and a friend have not done. That way we can work out what seires to do (Something like Map compare on project-gc!)

    Friends leaderboards

Preasumably it would just show their find counts and number of caches they've hidden?

    Collaborate on lists with friends

Maybe, if I'm going on a road trip with friends we would make a list of caches we want to go and visit. Could be a good idea.

Compete against friends for an achievement

Do I have to wait for Groundspeak to create an achievement or can I create my own? Also surely this could also be done by comparing my stats.

    Compare your stats with friends

Could be interesting, but not sure how much I would use it!

  10. I've been caching since 09, I rarely look at the site on a mobile device.

    Basic Details:

    Title

    Cache Type

    Description

    Coordinates/Location

    Difficulty/Terrain

    Size

    Favorites

Hint If only there was a way to fource a useful hint. I think it should be left blank if the hint is 'you don't need one'

Map (overview) Not really of much use for me

    Distance from Home Location

Corrected Coordinates The difference that there are corrected co-ords is so subtle it is not really noticable.

  11. Hi, thanks for once again giving us the oppertunity to comment. I've been a member since November 09.

    Basic Features:

Map layer selection (streets, aerial, hybrid, sources, etc.) I used this for a while, sometime I will use Open Street maps if I want information on footpaths, but most of the time it stays set to google maps.

Search field Seems to have improved recently, I seem to recall it not accepting a UK postcode. Seems to work now though

Ability to share direct link to current map view Never realy noticed this, if I wanted to share the page I would just copy the link out of the address bar.

Cache details pop-up with these features: It's fine for me! but I think a small tweak is needed to the test for Bookmarking, Send to GPS and log visit is neeeded. The closest image to send to GPS is the log visit image I know it's rather minor but it makes sense for the images to be closest to the link they represent. 2ngv143.jpg

    Premium Features:

My Finds and My Hides filters I don't use my hides so much, but I have used my finds recently.

Cache type filtersHandy, helps me spot areas with high concentrations of certain cache types.

Save results as Pocket QueryNot used this!

View existing Pocket Queries on the map Handy, I use it to check the pocket query I generated covers the entire walk or the entire area I'm caching in.

    Existing Community Requests:

Indication of corrected coordinates/solved puzzles Yes Please!

Ability to select/download caches from map by drawing a polygon on it Not sure I would really use it

Display DNFs This could be rather handy

  12. 1. What do you use the bio box for?

I don't. I put a copy of my stats from Project-gc in there a fair while ago but never really bothered to update it since

    2. Do you display banners from caches or events on your profile? How important is it to you that you are able to display these on your profile?

No, I find some particuarly distracting. But I understand some other people enjoy them.

    3. What do you most enjoy looking at on others' profiles?

It is handy to be able to look at the caches they have found.

    4. Below you will find all the functionality that the page currently offers.

Place the items in a stack ranked list of priority. Things that are most important to you should be at the top.

Let us know if there is anything missing from the list.

What information isn’t necessary on the page? What is taking up screen space that shouldn’t be? What do you not find useful?

Profile: Following on from the DNF pride email a fair while back I would like to see my DNF count on my profile

Avatar image It's ok, but rather too small to be useful

Find count Helpful, lets you know a bit about the person and how much experience they have

Send message to e-mail Needs to be easily accessible and visible. But it's only useful if people are verified!

'Member since:' More an out of interest thing, not of too much use again, it may be better moved to the stats section?

Status of account (Premium, Lackey, etc…) Rather helpful to know another users membership status

~ Link to give gift membership Never used it - Could be handy sometime though

Location Useful, but only if it has some kind of location or town name in it

Last visit to website Handy for knowing if a user is still active, BUT it would help more if it was when they last use the website/app

Send a friend request (only shows when viewing someone else’s profile, not your own) Never really understood this feature. Not sure why I would want it.

Trackables logged count Not sure why I really need this, maybe this is something that could be moved into Stats?

See forum posts No really feeling on this, surely that is do-able through the forum anyway?

    Geocaches:

Finds by cache type breakdown Can be interesting to see which event a user has attended. Lab caches isn’t overly helpful though I would like to know which events they found lab caches at.

Link to all geocache finds I use this to see when the user last found a cache

    Hides by cache type breakdown

    Link to all geocache hides

Souvenirs: Whilst I like souvenirs I don’t think they have a real purpose. However it would be handy to be able to ‘compress’ the souvenirs. I don’t really care that a user has found caches every day in August 2013. Maybe it would be better to have one for the 31 days challenge which can then be expanded to reveal all 31 icons

    List of souvenirs earned

~ Icons link to specific souvenir page

    Date souvenir was acquired

    Statistics:

Statistics that have been made public on geocaching.com/my/statistics.aspx I don’t really use this. I tend to get my statistics from project-gc instead!

Gallery: Fine, not really of much use other than offering a place to see all the users photos in one place.

Image gallery starting with most recent

    Multiple pages

If image is attached to geocache log, GC code is listed

Clicking image opens bigger view that links to log page/edit

Lists: Didn’t realise this was even an option on the profile page

List of all caches that user has awarded a favorite point Handy to know what someone else likes

List of all public bookmark lists

Trackables: As with my earlier comment I don’t really understand why I would want to know what trackables a user has ‘discovered’

List of Trackable types discovered or moved by kind

~ Icons link to search list filtered to those Trackables

List of trackable types owned This bit can be useful though

~ Icons link to search list filtered to those TrackablesOnly just discovered this existed, they aren’t clear as links

  13. Hi Glen,

Not sure of any venues around MotePark. But the Malta at Jct 6 has been used a few times, as has the two for one place at jct 7. Marinos (chippie) in Bearsted has been used a few times too! I would say a 6pm ish start, to give people coming from elsewhere a chance to get there after work?

If you post on the Geocaching in Kent Facebook page you might get a few more suggestions. https://www.facebook.com/groups/KentCachers

    Joe

  14. When I asked about Lab caches being implemented into the API I got the following answer.

There is no short term plan to integrate Lab Caches into pocket queries or the API. Lab caches are on a different platform than regular geocaches and their integration is limited to the items listed here.

So it looks like the difference in stats between project-gc and geocaching.com is here to stay for a while yet!

  15. The mega events in my newsletter are sorted by distance, except that the list is headed by the 2013 Geocaching Block Party despite that being very far off. I suppose this has to do with this being its own cache type.

Ah that kind of makes sense, although not immediately obvious!

  16. The number of events may have been reduced, but mine is only showing CITO events! Apparently my Closest event on Saturday is 150 miles away when there is one (that does not appear on the list) 4.9 miles away and another 27.1 miles away!

Also the mega event list does not seem to be sorted in any way at all, it starts with August (7th then 3rd) then goes to July, June then back to August!

  17. Hey,

I was always led to believe that the red arrow was the position on the nearest road whilst the green arrow was where the cache was actually located. But it seems in this case it has decided that the nearest road is the B Road and not the road that the cache is practically on, Maybe the road the cache is on is a private road, or maybe you have just uncovered a blip in Google maps.

    Joe
