  1. I tried to start a poll on my previous message, but I got an error code that said I couldn't, yes I am signed in, What did I do wrong?
  2. Everyone involved in geocaching must have a preferred position readout, Which is most accurate? deg, min, sec ddmm.xx, utm, dd.xxx, or another system I didn't list(I don't have my gpsr handy)
  3. laugh if you must! I was visiting with another geocacher last night, and had a brain storm(or brain fart you be the judge) I asked him if he knew the size of a standard sports card, he couldn't recall for sure, so I checked it seems some time ago the "standard size " was changed to 2-1/2" wide and 3-1/2" high, so I made a template using those dimensions in my handy office suite, it looks like it work for "sig cards" just fine (geocaching is often referred to as a sport right?) post your feedback.
  4. I just had my first 10 sigcards copied and laminated, it cost me a whopping $3.00 half of that was for the cardstock color copy that merged two sheets into one. They look good we will now see how they hold up in a cache environment. For the next batch I will just print what I want on both sides of my "proof" thereby saving the color copy charge. have fun!
  5. My 2¢ worth several folks use filmcans for micros, and they seem to last for a while. I drink coffee by the potfull and am planning on using (recycling) the "new" plastic containers that coffee comes in, they will need painted, with an appropriate color for the area they are to be placed in,(I think the bright red color with a black or blue lid might be too easy to spot) and also there is the environmental angle. Reduce Recycle Reuse
  6. Beings recycling stuff is something I do, I made 2 walking sticks from 3/4" emt conduit about 10 years ago standard wal-mart bmx bike grips fit fine and put crutchtips on the bottom. Even if you but new material we are probably under $10 total.
  7. Anybody here set up a cache with microcache legs leading up to a standard cache? If so, let me know how it turned out.
  8. I don't think geocaching will be banned, not this year anyway, the bottom line is this, use your head when placing a cache. Ask yourself why some states are requiring a fee or approval to place a cache, it probably comes down to the fact that some people don't use their head when placing a cache. Talk to your game and parks commission (or similar agency) about CITO, most states don't have the funding to keep wildlife areas cleaned up (in our area that includes several interstate lakes) I have found refrigerators, tons of broken beer bottles, cans and other junk in these areas. If we, as a group, proceed to clean these areas up the government will eventually take note of our activities and the fees and other bureaucratic bs might go away, or otherwise be reduced. Remember one bad apple can, indeed spoil the whole bunch.
  9. Anybody where to find a geocaching label small enough to fit on a film can? I just acquired about 50 35mm film cans, I thought I saw a label available for download somewhere but can't find it again.
  10. Ok I understand, is there anyone interested in promoting what I propose?
  11. Ok I may of misunderstood event caching, I thought it was a group of people going to a predetermined area to seek more than one cache. But if I take this a step further, we will see what happens. Call it a geocaching tournament, (we all how tournaments work) you have several "teams" of geocachers, from a town, business etc. Say 4 or 5 people each, that are willing to travel a certain distance,say>100 miles to participate in the "event". Each team has a time limit to find a cache and report it (this is where ham radio comes in), and receive their instructions and/or coordinates for the next cache, and so on, follow me? Is this doable, yes, will there be any interest? we'll see.
  12. We were wanting to set up an event cache out in West-Central Nebraska , but then it occurred to us that in some of the best areas around here, after the first five or so visitors the others could just follow the path worn by previous visitors. So here is the idea a multi-location event, there are 20+ wildlife areas with in 60 miles of Gothenburg NE, some are good CITO sites, How would we pull this wide area event off?
  13. I first saw the word muggle on a description of a cache near here, something like be aware of the muggles during daylight. I chuckled for I am not a muggle, in my opinion a muggle is a "normal" person that either dosent care or dosent understand what I do, but if they ask what I am doing I will do my best to draw them into the fold, if they show interest. Before I close this message I know that the question "What is "normal" anyway, I am not absolutely sure, but I am not "normal", nuf said.
  14. Sounds complicated, I think I will use my two letter 3 number scheme, all I need to do is track it, thanks for the info, I will play around with it til I figure it out.
  15. What is the basis of the "geo names" for example GCKKT1, or BM77531 I figure the GC is a geocache and BM is benchmark, but how are the alphanumeric characters generated that follow the GC or BM? Reason I am asking I have a bunch of waypoints saved that I need to name in a similar fashion (standardization).
  16. I just sent a message to the NGPC, and awaiting a reply but I was wondering how many cachers in west central Nebraska? I think a cache in trash out day needs to happen in the many WMAs out here, I found a few caches and was confronted with trash and beer cans/bottles and some other items I won't mention in detail. If anyone out here is interested contact me.
  17. I have had an interest in geocaching for a couple of years, but didn't go out and "do it" until yesterday, and I found 2, but now I am selling irrigation systems, in West Central Nebraska I will hunt more and perhaps place some new caches. Now to the trade issue, I agree it is the thrill of the hunt, not necessarily the prize you get. Go out there and enjoy the country we live in!, and leave your material world behind.
  18. Is a target icon available on microsofts terraserver? Or am I just not finding it?, this is in regard to the advanced search/geographic, if you use the address search then you have a target.
