  1. Looks like it starts in east about 184 miles from me, Neva I just glanced over the page briefly (got to go to work) do you have a brief synopsis on the process?
  2. If your unit has a EPE (Estimated Positional Error) reading use it to guess how far you could be away from the cache if the regular readout says 25 feet away and the EPE says 100 feet you can extrapolate the location from that data. The force comes with experience and as stated it will come to you also. Of course there is the "Where would I be if I were the cache?" Question, also known as just plain old deductive reasoning.
  3. I don't have a pic yet on the "caching trail" 1995 Jeep Cherokee SE (stripped edition), just turned over 210,000 runs like a top and gets 24 mpg.
  4. Thanks for the link, it would be nice to continue the run from Thedford east (southeast) to Broken Bow where there is a operating old time soda fountain, even open on Sunday, and a good place to eat east edge of town, I would be willing to help you out on this one! Let me know your ideas.
  5. I had an extreme idea the other day when I was in the Stapleton/ Tryon area. How about a multi step (individually logged) cache in the Sandhills Region. My primary goal was to inform people about the siginicance on the Sandhills, provide some educational information as wll as a standard trade items that relate to the Sandhills theme. If anyone is interested email or PM me via the forum. Bear in mind that Nebraska comprises about 76,578 square miles of land area, and about 20,000 square miles of that is the Sandhills region. So this is indeed a large project. Any ideas?
  6. I have read through the guidelines for placing a cache, on the web site, does anybody know of a printable format (doc, txt)?
  7. Uncle Sam's Air Force, late '70s to early 80's. Peace time communications. 2048th Comm Sqdn, Carswell AFB TX
  8. Paper is good for us with failing vision, I have a palm zire31,but when it comes to reading a "page" on it I almost need a magnifying glass. The vision thing is another reason I bought my Merigreen, over an E-TREK.
  9. And to think all this started with a simple question. hmm
  10. Since I am not a "premium subscriber" I don't get the gpx files, just the loc files, and change the geocaching.loc to GCxxxx, by cut and paste. Now that I think about it, I was using the loc files and got along just fine, I think one of the other programs I have won't recognize the loc extension just the gpx extension. Back to the original query, I just got done converting some files from loc to gpx one item at a time, after about 20 geocaching waypoints, I start forgetting the file format and end up with things like gpc, lox or other combinations. I would like to convert those twenty files in one chunk, thereby eliminating errors. Maybe I am just not working the program right. Maybe I should learn the command line operations instead of using the gui from quakemap. Unfortunately I am not a commandline experienced.
  11. Anybody know of a piece of software that will convert .loc files to .gpx files in a batch, 1 at a time is a pain. I have gps babble, gsak, and some other stuff it dosen't appear batch processing is an option on any of them.
  12. My mom acquired a Garmin GPS76S form a relative, the unit seems to work ok, for the most part, but the other day we were out caching and it regularly lost the sattelites after a short time they would be reaquired. In some areas there was moderate to heavy tree cover , other times no tree cover at all, do all the GPS MAP 76s's do that or do we just have a lemon?, BTW the firmware was updated to current Garmin spec last night and it still lost the birds.
  13. You actually have enough snow for snowmobiling?, If we were so lucky.
  14. Boy this thing went way off course. Clarification time, I don't have a problem with hunters, I like venison jerky as much as the next person, I have a problem with hunters that drink before going hunting, but when you live in an area that you can buy ammunition, a hunting permit, and beer in the same store, makes you wonder dosen't it. There used to be a law in Omaha NE that if you sold beer at your 7-11 store you couldn't sell gas, and vice versa, interesting concept, huh? I use to go fishing, but I don't have the time now, or maybe it is the patience I am lacking instead, not sure. I will be ordering my blaze vest soon btw., or maybe a whole suit, hat gloves the works. Cabelas here I come!
  15. I apologize for the "i...d" hunters comment, I was just going on my personal experience around here. That being said on with the show. This is a good thread, I am glad there has been a good response so far.
  16. In most parts of the country, various hunting seasons are open or will be opening soon. Around here there a lot of caches hidden in what the state refers to as wildlife management areas. What is the overall feeling within the group about safety vests being used whrn caching? You can find them ranging in price from $6.00 to over $75.00. Would you use one or take your chances with inebriated hunters, or just don't go geocaching? I would have started a poll but the PTB won't allow it.
  17. Yes you should I was only a half mile from my truck, on an overcast day, I thought about doing a backtrack then I remembered that I walked through a swampy area, didn't want to do that again, think of it this way, the freelance photog, who knows that you should take your camera with you everywhere, left it at home, and missed the shot of a lifetime. Making a WP of your car just makes sense.
  18. >$15.00 three led headlight (two white one red)made by the bunny company.
  19. Sorry I confused the readers with this, Why don't we have a "delete thread button" on here?
  20. Today while I was doing my job (really) as a irrigation system salesman, a thought came to me. I had ran across a farmer on a previoulsy unknown, (to me at least,) road. He looked at me and my truck (used for service work during the season) a bit strange, as if to say are you lost?, Since I had my trusty merigreen with me I imagined a reply, like this "heck no I know exactly where I am (within 7 meters or so)", But how does this information help me in the real world, I have no clue since the maps I carry are an old DeLorme Atlas and Gazetteer, a standard issue plat map in book form (plss) and a free county directory provided by the advertisers. One other thing my work truck(cachemobile) is a 2002 F-250 4X4 that someone else pays for the gas in (what could be better?) Please someone help me out and make this a good story as it pertains to geocaching and gps use.
  21. Editorial opinion, and just that. A couple of weeks ago a lion was spotted and or killed near South Sioux City NE. Think about this for a while, why? would it have anything to do with us (humans not just geocachers) moving into their turf? A few years ago there was a big deal about wolves in the boundry area of Minnesota, the ranchers went nuts, who was there first the domesticated sheep or the wolves?
  22. Hmmm, Well folks, the solar powered flashlight, is indeed a marvel of modern engineering, just for fun I have a 3 volt led flashlight and a appropriately sized solar panel, that arrangement, with NiMh batteries rated at ~1800mAh might just work. BTW I know of at least 5 remotely located flashing warning lights, that are solar charged in another application I have seen this setup, barricade lights that are solar "powered" and the latest version is some flashing school crossing lights. go figure
