  1. FINALLY got to get my geocaching groove on. Been following/member for awhile but haven't been able to really do much til recently. I had such a fun time. Where we live, it's so lovely to sit outside and enjoy the peace and quiet...but I got to thinking how perfect the entire front area would be for caches. Turns out one of our neighbors we discovered had the same idea...all up and down the road here. We've found most of them except a couple but I'm determined to find those. So to "kentnnan" we're on your trail! Greetings from us down on the corner there! It took a year to get hubs on the ball and finally got him in gear...and he found all of them in record time, and beat me to the site to get the logs posted! I think it nailed him. Our son wasn't sure what the point was but he did enjoy the exploration part and of course the caches with toys in them. Now that we've done it finally, gotten out...the addiction has most definitely seeped into my being. I had a feeling it would - I love treasure hunts of all kinds. I had such a great time the last 2 days...my body is aching though from some of the hiking and climbing we did (not necessarily part of the terrain difficulty itself, but from likely finding the trail the hard way to begin with!) and well worth it. We will be hiding our own here shortly. I am overflowing with ideas and cache contents and locations. It got up in me! If you're in PV or close by, please say hi. We'd love to meet you guys. Don't know many people around so far. Thanks to kentnnan, aotea, brandiedew, nativtxn, and Team BLANC 5 for helping provide us with a great couple of days!
  2. So to be clear, there's no 'rating' or category listing for the cannister types, just that there is one at X location and it's correct?
  3. Well, that explains why John Tucker must die.... Nice pics. Now find me some out in Az!

    Firefox or?

Testing Lil Devil's suggestion...turned it off and hitting reply... Edit - worked perfectly. Thanks so much! That was getting irritating
  5. I think this may be my favorite thread. These are all so creative and fun. Impressive ;-) I have a morbid streak so the scary ones will get my attention...these heads - I might have to steal the idea for a sig cannister! Many thinner skinned people might wig out at the bad taste but I am not thin skinned, so if I was traipsing the woods or anywhere and glanced under a fallen log to see a creepy alien head staring back at me, I'd be delighted, get a major kick out of it. Even creepy ghoul heads or skulls...because that initial moment of uncertainty of WTF IS THAT? feels really good *after* you figure out it's harmless. I guess I'm one of those who just like getting spooked and jolted a little... Since much of this is a matter of opinion, relative to the subjectivity of the beholder, is there a proper category for the more morbid, macabre or downright ghoulish sorts of hide"not so faint of heart" or those with a better sense of humor?
  6. Battleship? Sounds fun, how do you play?

    Firefox or?

Having a strange problem and not sure what the culprit is: When I've posted, and the window changes to what should be the acknowledgement of the post and redirect, doesn't happen. It just goes to a blank white screen and "done" so I have to refresh the page to get it to change normally. A time or two I did notice the bar up top to "allow" FF to open the site...so figured it was a FF issue but not sure how to fix that. Another one is the display and I'm not sure whose side it's on but the main forum page doesn't load completely (for awhile I only thought the forum went down to geocaching hitchhiker forum because the rest wasn't loaded at all). I reloaded a few times and the whole thing showed finally. Posted in the general forum originally because I didn't think there was an option for my locale. The website itself seems okay far as I know. Any suggestions? Thanks
  9. Okay I officially recant my hint of sarcasm on grounds that I did post at the ungodly hours when most normal sane people would be asleep so mybad. Outside that, thanks for the replies ;-) Got the Idiot's Guide in about an hour ago - my new gps is coming Monday so I'll spend the rest of the weekend boning up. Thanks!
  10. Wow, actual trash. I was under the impression that we log what is in the cache and what we put in, if anything, so assumed this is a way to track who adds 'trash' at all. Are there designations for cache ratings? kidcaches that would just be for kids and adult caches that won't have McDonald's toys - it could help?
  11. Awesome, thanks for the clarification. And to clarify for some who wondered: I have no agenda other than learning and indulging, but the thread did raise some concerns. I've been aware of geocaching for half a dozen years now and even joined the gc.com previously with a general acct and even that time when I posted a friendly hello I got no reply at all. I checked a month later and still no reply so I thought either the community isn't so welcoming of new people despite the hype or maybe there just wasn't anyone local and both possibilities left me feeling that it would be pointless to hide caches eventually if there's nobody around who'd find them. After we moved and I decided to get more fully immersed, I set up this new acct (forgot the older stuff anyway). It was after checking out the thread that it made me wonder. I do understand human nature and what sorts I'll find on any given forum, and most of them have their cliques for sure - the old timers who get used to things having been around from the start and some of those tend to feel threatened by new people and the changes in general from "how it used to be" - those I just disregard. Mine was mostly concern that it might be pointless across the board (especially after getting the premium membership) at least as far as meeting local people interested, and then having to go through the above sorts of mindsets trying to get involved at all. Thanks for the clarification. I appreciate the replies!
  12. So how does this work exactly? Who are the reviewers and what did they do to get to be reviewers? Is it like some elite cacher club? Do the reviewers actually work off some clarified guidelines or are their decisions arbitrary and based on their own personal subjective opinions? Are they employees of GC? After browsing through the rogue reviewer thread it seemed some people got all hostile and bent out of shape for what seemed, as my impression, to be "daring to question the great and powerful oz" so it definitely raised the question of what to expect with trying to get caches listed. This isn't intended as confrontational or inflammatory - but curious as to what this is about. I see on one of the other sites terracache or one of those they want to people to get sponsors and those people seemed to have this same sort of role and that gave me concerns of stepping innocently into what at initial glance seemed to be a large open community of people enjoying the game turning out to be more about some cliquish group who'd just as soon keep things cliquish, so the new hides get knocked out of the way in favor of their personal buddy hides. I am new but if that goes on here, I'd just as soon get a refund on my premium membership. Can I get some honest explanations on this issue? Ease my mind? Thanks (and while here, given that I've posted about 4 times now and only had 2 people respond directly at all, when there are scores of people on the site, I'm wondering if I'm even welcome here just being new)
  13. So is there some sort of initiation new people need to get through before being acknowledged at all? Thanks for the warm welcome reception
  14. After being inspired by the trading card swag topic, I just got to thinking about the game aspect and wondered if there are any threads covering the topic of games developed for the gc platform. In the other topic I suggested poker, which could be fun...have any of you come up with geocaching games and if so, can you direct me to any threads? If not, might there be an interest in creating anything of this nature? Capture the Flag geocaching, wild races or road rally sorts, or ARG style caching, that sort of thing, are what I mean by games incorporating geocaching. Thanks!
  15. re-Posted here since I discovered it was here! AKA Mentor Wanted! Hi all New girl in town and living in the gorgeous Prescott Valley, Az. Just joined the site as a premium member so will be learning about all the functions and offerings. I stumbled over a cache accidentally last year while checking out an historical marker/graveyard and was officially hooked, though I'd been familiar with the site and concept for awhile before then. I was given a Magellan sports trak GPS but wasn't very intuitive and had no manuals, cables or anything and couldn't figure out how to use it. Anyway, I'm browsing Amazon ready to order something solid, reliable, and easy to use in the $300 range. I'm seeing high reviews for the Garmin Rino, so thought I would post and ask if anyone here is using it and how it fares for a complete noob and anything I might need to be aware of, and especially if I'll end up spending more $ on back end accessories that I will need but that don't come with (and worse, aren't even mentioned). Finally, if anyone is in Prescott Valley Az area, I would love to meet you. We're relatively new in town too and I've had little opportunity to meet people so far. Geocaching buds would be ideal! Thanks in advance. I think the email is shown, maybe in profile if you prefer that option too. Have a great evening! (Note - I bought the Garmin Rino 120 2 way radio and waiting on delivery for tomorrow but if anyone uses it, I would love feedback all the same)
  16. Love the card idea too And a cool little game of poker could be played you know ;-) Best hand wins - logging the card/stats to confirm the hand, and playing against other cachers by finding card caches to make up the winning hand. Maybe one TB sort of card could be considered a wild card? Other games could be played as well. So, new as I am and none of you know me or are used to me, I still have to toss my opinion on the table for this idea. I think it's great. I would collect and play this in a heartbeat! Count me in!
  17. Just wanted to add that I really, really love this idea...do you have any tutorial sort of help for others to make their own? I'd love to learn and come up with some as well. Got a few intriguing ideas, but not the production know how. Thanks!
  18. Hi all Still noobing my way around but wanted to ask for a little clarification, just to be sure. When you say "trash" and "garbage" do you mean literally or do you mean junky crappy items, which to me could be relative to the finder. Surely people don't actually put garbage in a cache (and get away with it)? Are all caches typically dollar store items or is it okay for a bit more expensive items? Thanks!
  19. Thanks Actually, I went with the Garmin Rino 120 w/ 2 way radio...and picked up the Idiot's Guide v.2 while there And because I'm awake and all focused on it, went with the expedited shipping for tomorrow...which is when I'm sure I'll be back with my gazillion and 4 questions on how the thing works! So sleep well...I'll be back!
