  1. I cached once in the pouring rain with a friend and it was unpleasant but survivable since we were doing P&G's...until one of the caches was tucked a bit into some trees, BRRRRRRRR cold rain down going down your neck is not good. Won't be doing that again Cached in the snow once but pretty sure it doesn't count since it was a flurry in TX
  2. One downside to informally adopting a cache is you would never know if people were trying to relay info by emailing the cache owner. I don't have a ton of repair stuff but carry extra pens, lots of ziplocs, cable ties, and trash bags (for geo trash and dirty napkins/tissues after cleaning out a muddy cache. If a cache is so full of awful/broken/muddy stuff that it is practically empty or very pitiful looking after a cleaning out, I'll add some swag.
  3. I know I've seen it somewhere. It has little icons showing the various different kinds of traveler coins/tags you've discovered/moved and then a number next to each item on the list to show how many of each you've moved/discovered. I hope someone knows what I'm talking about?? Thanks
  4. The worst here in Central TX is the cypress tree, an evergreen w tiny tiny spikes running along all the branches and occasionally if you touch the wood a very long 1 inch splinter will stab you and you'll have to pull it out. I come out of one of those feeling like Ive been wrestling a porcupine
  5. I'm not sure, that's what it sounds like I did. Did you crop the image, first, to take out all the extra screen stuff and only include the box with the map on it? Yes I cropped before I saved. When I upload to photobucket though (or my geocaching gallery) it shrinks it to a tiny blurry picture . I assume everyone is using free photobucket accounts ?
  6. How are you guys getting your photobucket images to look so big and clear? I printed my screen, saved as a jpg in paint, uploaded to photobucket and stuck it in here with img brackets and it looked really tiny.
  7. Here's my area, where North Austin, Cedar Park, and Round Rock TX meet. I'm at 100+ caches, with many of my finds not in this area, so I have a lot of fun ahead of me I couldn't get it to zoom out to 2 miles, too many caches. The empty triangle in the middle is a huge family owned ranch whose owners have refused all offers to buy their land for development. Most of my hides are in this area, a few others are nearby. Here's a link: http://www.geocaching.com/map/default.aspx...;zm=13&mt=m
  8. Found this older thread with lots of great links http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=158359
  9. We should definitely incorporate skin-tight jumpsuits So cute! Great article
  10. Pet Peeves: Not logging DNF's Snarky posts, unless they're mine of course
  11. Yay, thanks for sharing I've also been googling around looking for a quick intro to orienteering. There's one near me, was curious if orienteering puzzle caches were common?
  12. Instead of littering the comments with mean comments about how whiny you think others are, why not just ignore them? Yeah that was definitely a waste of type (ie. I concede your point, but it is frustrating to see so many unfriendly comments that aren't bad enough to warrant moderation, but likely scaring some from posting their questions).
  13. At some point I came across a guide to some common puzzle cache types but can't remember where and barely skimmed it at the time. If you know of any guides, FAQs, helps of any kind over-viewing common types of puzzle caches out there, please share links here! I want to start knocking some out in my area.
  14. Clearly you have nothing to add to the conversation so why reply? I've participated in a lot of forums over the years and this one has the most snarky comments ever Sounds like I need to check out this series I was about to post a new thread asking if there were any puzzle caches guides out there on common puzzles, etc before starting to tackle some in my area.
  15. Sounds like a fun way to "cache" with out of town friends/family now and then
  16. Yay can't wait Hope I was in the first 200 I could use a new pathtag for my current collection of two hehe.
  17. If Grundspeak doesn't recognize FTF then why is there a FTF section at the top of their official log sheets? Why do you suspect Taoisearch of being a FTF Hunter Hater? I certainly didn't get that impression from his post. What I picked up was more an apathy emotion than a hateful one. Since FTFs are not recognized, sanctioned or controlled by Groundspeak, many feel that they are not a legitimate part of the game. The FTF proponents have chimed in here several times, stating what the "FTF Rules" were, yet there are no FTF rules. The entire concept exists as a fiction between the cache owner and the person who locates the cache first. While it's true that for many, this fiction can add a tremendous thrill to the hunt, there is nothing official about it. Strictly a subset of the game, which many don't participate in. Typically, those who don't participate aren't haters. They just don't cache for the same reasons as the FTF players. Don't confuse accuracy with thoughtlessness.
  18. A great way to compactly store several grocery bags is in a zipper quart sized ziploc bag - that's how I carry them in my backpack. And occasionally if it's far to a trashcan will tie a bag of trash to the bottom of my backpack.
  19. So sad, there doesn't seem to be one for Texas or including Texas Did find some really neat sounding ones though that I popped into my Amazon wish list covering things like rocks, minerals, fossils and wildlife. Already have one for birds and one for wildlife. Sure would be nice to have one that had a bit of everything though :/ What field guide are you using? I would love something like that! Also, I think it's awesome that your kids are getting involved in CITO. It's wonderful to encourage little environmentally conscious kids who may grow up to be more responsible adults. I like the National Audubon Society's regional field guides for the pack, as they have a little bit of everything from rocks and minerals to bugs to fish to trees to flowers to mammals, you get the idea. We are in Washington so use the Pacific Northwest guide, I see you are in Georgia so I would check out their Field Guide to the Southeastern States. It's also handy on long car rides... amazing how entertaining looking at those pictures can be!
  20. I'm definitely there. I bought a bunch of Lock n Locks to use as cache containers, but when I saw how well they fare outside compared to other types of food storage containers I decided to keep some for their intended use
  21. Ah maybe this is the case. I had something similar happen to me. I edited my comment on the RSVP to a meetup I was in a few times within a few mins (I had NO idea the organizer would receive an email each time) and got a nasty email from the organizer of the event who assumed I was spamming her personal email. The comment I was editing (b/c I'm a grammar perfectionist) had to do with asking if my hubby could be added as my guest if a spot opened up, and she assumed I was directly emailing her three times in a row to "beg" for my hubby to be added as my guest lol I got this awful email going on about my immaturity and harassing nature
  22. Lots of diff things going on here... It sounds like the cache owner was referring to harassing that went on in the past, unrelated to this new cache, and that they feel the OP went looking for the second cache with the intent to harass them further? Some of the logs mention wasting a lot of their time looking at the listed coordinates - who knows how many looked and looked and didn't post a DNF. The lucky ones had a neighbor point them in the right direction or had access to others' logs. I can see why the cache was archived. I do feel for the CO since it sounds like there was something interesting at GZ that related to the cache's name, but I feel more for the poor families who had a frustrating experience. Pulling out of the sport seems overly dramatic assuming there was no serious harassing done by the OP in the past. Her comments about her "disabled children" and "a mother and her children" make me feel less sympathy for her rather than more. No one (irregardless of gender or parenting status) should be harassed, nor by the same token, be allowed to break the rules others are expected to follow. It's interesting she is announcing her plan to ask for a refund on her premium membership as though Groundspeak.com didn't provide what she paid for Also surprised by her nudge nudge wink wink comment on her cache description admitting her cache's real location was breaking the rules. And all that said, I agree there is a polite diplomatic way to go about alerting CO'ers about issues with their cache. That said, I don't consider posting a NM or NA when a CO has not responded for months to a serious issue to be either impolite or harassing. In this case, we simply don't know what may have happened in the past that upset this lady.
  23. The mini ninjas are in the 3 to 8yo range. They are happy to find a few caches but after that start to lose interest and need some rest. We stop a LOT to throw rocks in creeks, climb things, and find interesting sticks and rocks to poke things with. Several of my DNF's are because I have a very limited time to look before they get bored or the little one starts to wander off. My eldest does not like geocaching AT ALL - he'll just watch as the rest of us look. Other three enjoy it (for limited amounts of time), and my 7yo has his own account Mini ninja #2. Sometimes I just make a note he found it with his mom, other times I'll ask him what he'd like to tell the various cache owners about their hide and type it up. What I carry: First aid kit Gardening gloves (whoever is going to be poking around at ground zero puts on a pair - lots of thorny plants and trees in TX) water snacks, lots and lots and LOTS of diff kinds of snacks picnic lunch if we're out for a long time In Summer also: Child-safe bug repellent Sunglasses and/or hat
