  2. I like to use names that either give a hint about, or are a play on words for, the location of the cache. Here are a few examples: LAX (Abbreviation for Leila Aboretum Xpress cache.) 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. (Hidden in the Whitehouse Nature Center) Cache Me If You Keehne! (Hidden in the Keehne Environmental Area) Grandmother's House (You have to go over the 'river' and through the woods to get to this cache.) Baker's Quarter Dozen (A three stage multi-cache hidden in the Baker Sanctuary.) Ellis Island (A play on "L.S." Island...short for Leroy Schmidt.) ------- "I may be slow, but at least I'm sweet!"

  5. On one of my caches, a finder sent me an e-mail, pointing out a nearby historic site that I might want to mention on my cache page and encourage visits to while people were in the area. I did so, and then later (when long term flooding made the original stage 1 of my multi-cache inaccessible), I modified the cache page to use his suggestion as replacement first stage. In your case, since the object was directly en route to another cache, I would recommend posting a mention of it (along with its coordinates) in your post, or e-mail the cache owner and suggest that they add the information to their cache description. ------- "I may be slow, but at least I'm sweet!"

  7. Pretty soon, CYBret will be drinking something that's been in a cache. (Actually, it's been in several caches by now...not to mention a swimming pool, a freezer, a cop car, and who knows where else!) ------- "I may be slow, but at least I'm sweet!"

  9. Following are some of the items that I've put into caches that moms might like: - Mini cross stitch kits - lace or crocheted doilies - books - measuring spoon set - folding can opener - refrigerator magnets - a puzzle postcard - plant pot decorators - mini picture frames - travelers pack of Q-Tips I've also put some items that dads might like: - padlocks - keychains - utility knives or mini multi-tools - screwdriver kit - tape measures - mini flashlights And of course, I trade a lot of kiddie type items...because I'm still a kid at heart. ------- "I may be slow, but at least I'm sweet!"

  11. quote:Originally posted by Cheesehead Dave: I was one of the last people to log it as a find. I too, wondered why the cache was still listed and not archived. I debated whether to count it as a find or not. Since I made the effort to get to the correct coordinates, and I found the screws (not holes, the screws that held the container in place were still there) where the container was, which did take a bit or crawling out on the rocks, I decided to count it as a find. I didn't read through the old logs that carefully, so I didn't know what I would (or in this case, wouldn't) be looking for. Since the cache was not archived, I had no reason to believe that there was nothing to be found. By adding your smiley face to the list, you've just increased the chances that someone else will not read through the old logs carefully, and end up making a disappointing visit to the site. If the others before you had posted frowny faces, chances are you would have looked at the logs more closely to figure out what kind of trouble the previous visitors were having. ------- "I may be slow, but at least I'm sweet!"

  13. quote:Originally posted by georgeandmary:With out trying to I came across an item that fits into my own locationless cache. I went boating with my brother in law and he took my wife and I out to the channel islands and showed us this HUGE natural arch. I have a locationless for natural arches. I had my camera, my gps so I took the photo and the coords but I haven't logged it. Is is ethical to log your own locationless? My opinion is that in order to place a locationless cache, you should have gone out and found an object or place which fits the description, as an example to share in the description. When you place a real cache, you have to go there first in order to set up your cache page. It should be no different for locationless caches. Of course, by having this philosophy, it meant I've lost out on creating cache pages for a couple of the ideas I had, because someone else ended up coming up with the same idea before I could generate my example find. ------- "I may be slow, but at least I'm sweet!"
  14. quote:Originally posted by Jamie Z: I found it. I was in the park today, about to search for a different cache in the park. I stopped by the office and on my way out, I passed by the maintenance shed. Sitting on a shelf in the shed was the container for the archived cache. I went back into the office and asked about it. The man in the office told I could put it back if I wanted... but not knowing where the original location was, I took it home instead. [...] So.. is this a find? I'd say sign the logbook, and log it as a find. As for not knowing where the original location is, I'd suggest taking the cache back to the park, and hiding it at N 35° 08.040 W 089° 37.640, as the cache page states. The clue says something about checking in at the station. Perhaps that'll help you figure out where it needs to go. ------- "I may be slow, but at least I'm sweet!"

  16. quote:Originally posted by Lazyboy & Mitey Mite: If [an abandoned cache] is in your area, put a "watch" on it and respond to any problems. You don't have to adopt it as we know sometimes that upsets the original cacher. quote:Originally posted by Jeremy Irish: Here's what I don't get. I place a cache and basically don't care a whit whether it is cache or trash. I don't bother checking up on it at all, or placed it in another state and forgot about it. Someone takes it upon themselves to fix it up, and asks to adopt it. My email has changed or I ignore them for whatever reason. The cache is adopted by requesting the web site. I should be upset? Come on now. So is the opinion that someone who is lazy and/or irresponsible has the right to be mad when they essentially abandoned the cache? It never ceases to amaze me when people jump on the band wagon to protect or appease those who aren't willing (or able, as the case may be) to do their part, as opposed to supporting the concerns and wishes of those who are actively participating and pulling their own weight. I agree with Jeremy. If a person has had a reasonable opportunity to respond to a cache that needs attention, then they have no right to get upset over someone else stepping in to pick up their slack. End of story. ------- "I may be slow, but at least I'm sweet!"
  17. Just a quick heads up that this event is almost upon us...this coming Sunday. For anyone who doesn't already have plans, you might want to put it on your calendar. It sounds like it's going to be fun. [] ------- "I may be slow, but at least I'm sweet!"

  19. quote:Originally posted by cachew nut: Same here. I'll just resort to finding them and not placing anymore. Exactly. If the consensus is that our only focus should be "What's in it for me?" rather than also trying to give something back to those who are kind enough to place caches for our enjoyment, then I too can play that game. ------- "I may be slow, but at least I'm sweet!"

  21. quote:Originally posted by BassoonPilot: I wonder how long after the first "hidden coordinate" cache is listed before someone intentionally places a cache with "unhidden" coordinates five feet away? I would hope that we are part of a community who treats each other with respect. If someone deliberately sabotages another's wish to not have unregistered users looking for their cache, then that speaks poorly of the community of geocachers as a whole. I don't see that kind of thing happening where I live. If it does, it'll probably be the end of my placing any new caches. quote:Originally posted by BassoonPilot: If the "feature" can be so easily circumvented, then it is of dubious value. But what of the registered cache plunderer ... God forbid, who might also be a Charter Member? Almost EVERY feature here can be easily circumvented. By your logic, if this is a reason NOT to have a feature...then we might as well shut the site down, because people COULD be malicious. Personally, though, I would prefer to give it our best shot...and give people the benefit of the doubt to be respectful of each other's wishes and property...and then, if enough of us prove ourselves unable to do so, make changes to try to discourage the disrepectful behavior. At the very least, this new feature will make a good number of geoacachers happier (just to know that Jeremy is listening to, and responding to our requests). That in itself should be worth something.

Although I haven't e-mailed Jeremy myself, I've been kind of hoping that he'd pop in here with his 2 cents worth, too. Even if his answer is that he thinks it's a bad idea and says that he's not going to consider the change, at least we'd know where he stands...and whether or not we should stop wasting our breath (or our typing fingers, as the case may be) on continuing to discuss the issue.
