Oh that's good...the next person will enter a log that says, "The travel bug isn't in the cache, even though it's shown above." And then as soon as they post, the bug link disappears, and makes them look like they hallucinated. icon_rolleyes.gif

Has anyone brought this new bug to Jeremy's attention, or is this the first it's been noticed?

I guess meanwhile, we should post another log, and then delete it, just to fix the bug reference?

No apologies necessary. You were right the first time. Sure, the names are different, but they are twins none the less: "THIS IS A WHITE AFLAC DUCK THAT CAN BE USED TO RELIEVE YOUR STRESS BY SQUEEZING HIM. SO FEEL FREE TO RELIEVE SOME OF YOUR STRESS WHEN YOU TRANSPORT HIM FROM CACHE TO CACHE."

UPDATE: Hmmm...I just noticed something else weird, though. I see that you retrieved the Lucky Duck from the cache, but for some reason, it's still showing the TB link on the cache page, even though the TB page shows it as being in your possession. What's up with that?

    Jeremy,

I understand that your poll was a simple Yes or No, with no alternate suggestions allowed...but now that the poll is over, I'd like hear your opinion of Jamie Z's idea (that I happen to be in agreement with icon_smile.gif). Since logs are a snapshot in time, wouldn't it make more sense that the find count for each log be a static snapshot of where the person was when they posted the log????

Frustrating. I took the AFLAC Rubber Duck TB and really want to log it.

    Cache you later,

I know that a similar thing happens on the forums. But it sounds like what you're describing is something different. Did you say that it only happens for THAT cache page, but not with others? Weird. I went to the cache page, and clicked on Log Your Visit, and the log page popped up no problem. It looks like you still haven't been able to get in there yet and grab the TB, though. Does it continue to tell you you need to log in even if you log in a second time?

I'd recomemmed e-mailing Jeremy. Meanwhile, you should be able to go directly to the TB page, and 'grab' it, as opposed to retrieving it from the cache page. That way, people won't try to visit the cache, thinking they will still find the duck.

By the way, there's a twin out there: AFLAC Duck icon_smile.gif

  10. Lord Baltimore (who's clearly stated goal was to see ALL of Maryland before heading out of the state). Here's the final log:

"OK so LB's goal was seeing Maryland first. Well, we figured that could wait, so we took him to Iceland with us last week. He saw a volcano crater, snowy lava fields, geysers, waterfalls, and rode an authentic viking horse. He enjoyed international travel so much that we figured he could use more of it. So we left him at a busy bus stop in Reykjavik. Hope he turns up again someday. Good luck LB."

Here's the posting from the cache they logged him into: "Wish I'd known about this cache before we got to Iceland, however it is close enough to where we left Lord Balitmore (at a Bus Stop in Reykjavik near the Hotel Esja) to get him credit for distance travelled. Hope someone finds him who will put him on the right track and into a safe cache.

Again we did not find the cache, but it is a good baseline for LB. Hope he turns up."

WTF?! They logged the bug into a cache that they never even visited, and then left it out in the public at a busy bus stop (without posting coordinates, or giving the exact location of the bus stop)...'hoping' that the random person who found it would look into what geocaching was, and put the bug back into circulation??? Give me a break! icon_rolleyes.gif

You're welcome. icon_smile.gif But actually, the idea itself isn't mine. I found it on an earlier forum posting here. Before copying the idea, though, I wanted to get a concensus on whether would be acceptable to include my previous pre-SAM cache stops or not.

But so far, the vote is pretty balanced: 2 votes for No, 2 for Yes, 3 for 'Don't use the PTL at all', and 11 for 'Do what you want'. A lot of help you guys are! icon_razz.gif)

Yes. icon_smile.gif That's the main idea behind it...to have an automatic map generated of our geocaching travels.

I realize this leads to giant looking posts, something I'm sure many folks don't care for - so I was wondering if there was a way for us to use a smaller font when we quote someone, or if that'd be something that would have to be done to the software options at the host?

I'm not sure. Let's see if this works. Nope, it didn't work. If there's a way, I don't know what it is.

  17. Can we make 'write in' votes here?

I'd like to see each logger's total count at the time they found that particular cache. I've seen comments that people like to know how experienced a cacher is before they decide how serious to take the person's comments. If I have 77 finds today, but I left a note on a cache way back on my 2nd ever find, that log should reflect my status at the time, not what it is today (or whenever someone new logs the cache).

For any given cache hunt, isn't it more important how many finds the person had at the time they signed log than how many they have at the present? The log itself is static (unless an update is made...and if it is, go ahead and regenerate the number at that time, since we'll get to see the new date anyway), then why shouldn't the find counts for each cache log also be static? That way, there wouldn't have to be any regeneration time used to recalculate the entire list of finds on any given cache page each time a new log is posted.

The Tai Chi guy was probably a fellow geocacher, trying to 'blend in' while waiting for YOU to clear the area. icon_razz.gif When he saw that wasn't going to work, he was finally forced to clear out of the area, and go home to log a Not Found. icon_biggrin.gif

  20. I've decided to turn my newest travel bug, S.A.M., into a personal travel logger, rather than releasing it as a traditional travel bug. I've seen others do this, and I like the idea of being able to view a quick list (or map) of my Geocaching adventures.

My question is this: Is it kosher to backtrack through my pre-existing geocache visits, so that the history will reflect all of my travels from day one? Or would that be considered 'cheating', since SAM didn't actually visit all of those caches with me?
