Micro caches in the woods

That kind of thing bugs me, as well. A coworker and I went out to check on a couple of my caches during lunch today (I wanted to check the coordinates with my new GPSr ... a Magellan MAP 330X Yeah, I know, it's no Garmin V or 76S...but for the price, I'm thinking I'm going to like it a lot better than the Eagle Explorer I had been using. ) As we picked up trash left behind in one of the parks, we were grousing about people who are so lazy they throw things on the ground within sight of a trash can! As I told her, I know that sometimes things will fall from someone's pocket or bag without them noticing...but the ones that really burn me are people who obviously see that they've dropped something...and they look right at it...but then turn their back to it, and leave it there anyway. Blatently dumping an ashtray, as you witnessed, takes it to an even higher level of inconsideration. People like that make me feel ashamed to be in the same species with them. -

Micro caches in the woods

quote:Originally posted by Hawk-eye: There is a danger from any inexperienced (or just lazy) cacher hunting any kind of cache ... I've seen cacher "evidence" where they have gone in an literally tore up an area looking for a cache. That's why my cache description spefically states, "None of the micro containers are covered. Each is in plain view, but you’ll basically need to be right on top of them before you’ll be able to see them." On the other hand, I've heard people complain about virtual caches when, rather than reading cache description pages, they do a mass download and go out searching for caches that they have no idea what they are looking for. (In my mind, these people are doing themselves a disservice...possibly missing out on cautions and/or hints about cool things to look for or do while they're at the cache site.) I hope, though, that even if a person has no idea what kind of cache container (or not) they are looking for, that they will use courtesy, and not tear the area up. Obviously, though, the various partcipants in this sport cover the whole spectrum of common sense and common courtesy. -

Is anyone else a bit weary of locationless caches?

Email notification not functioning
Zuckerruebensirup replied to wx-man's topic in General geocaching topics
I'm getting log notifications on at least some of the caches on my watch list. I remember another time in the past, though, where certain ones weren't showing up...and then BAM! the floodgates opened, and a slew of old notifications suddenly popped up. I'm betting this is a similiar deal. ------- "I may be slow, but at least I'm sweet!" -
Micro caches in the woods
Zuckerruebensirup replied to briansnat's topic in General geocaching topics
I've gotten positive responses to my Grandmother's House, which includes four film containers (all hidden in the thick of the woods). In my opinion, micros are ok in places like this, as long as your description and/or clues make it very obvious where the hiding spots are. ------- "I may be slow, but at least I'm sweet!" -
Need a GPS for under 75 dollars

I've seem various models go fairly cheaply on eBay. I'd recommend checking there periodically. ------- "I may be slow, but at least I'm sweet!" -

I knew it would happen eventually, and told myself I wasn't going to get upset when the time came...but now that it has, I couldn't help feeling bummed. Today I discovered that my very first cache (and my only actual ammo can out of six placements) is missing. I've heard stories here of people who took the "mystery box" home...ended up reading the info page, and later put the cache back. I'm hoping that something like this will happen, but highly doubting that it will. More likely, my cache (and its contents) was deliberately stolen, and I'll never see it again. I'm curious, though, how many of you have had a cache come up missing (not just a "no found" logged...but you actually confirmed yourself that it was gone), and had it mysteriously show back up again at a later date. Dare I hope?

This is a really good deal, the GPS, windshield mount, DC power and PC cables, and MapSend Streets all for $200 US. And tomorrow is the last day to buy the GPS if you want the $50 mail-in rebate from Magellan. Atilla, I saw your post the other day...just in time to take advantage of the that rebate. (I had been doing some research, and trying to decide what unit to get, but couldn't make up my mind.) I decided that since the MAP 330X had all my "must haves", the $152 final price was too good to pass up. I bought mine at Sam's yesterday, a few minutes before closing. Thanks for sharing the tip. ------- "I may be slow, but at least I'm sweet!"

Sounds like a great idea! Personally, though, I eventually like to call my travel bugs back home once they've met their goals. What would be cool with this one is if you (or whatever cacher happens to be dropping a particular TB frog off at the shrine) would remove the tracking tag from it, and place it back into a cache (to send on its way back to a cache near its owner, for retrieval). With some clear instructions on the Travel Bug page and/or a laminated tag attached to the traveler, it shouldn't be too difficult to coordinate. ------- "I may be slow, but at least I'm sweet!"

GPS Personal Locator watch

That might be a good gadget to make our teenagers wear when going out with their friends...to make sure they're really going where they say are. ------- "I may be slow, but at least I'm sweet!" -

Why'd you buy your GPS?

That would count under the third choice, I'd say. I'm curious, though...wouldn't a simple compass have been a whole lot cheaper? ------- "I may be slow, but at least I'm sweet!"
