I listed a new cache this past weekend, and noticed that the 'Long Description' field had the following description: "Details about the cache, including contents of the cache, what the container looks like, etc. You can be as brief or as detailed as you like." I'm guessing that many people are merely following the listed suggestion.

You can't get rid of them (and WE don't see them...not for yours, anyway...we see them for our own). Those are there so that you can make future changes to your posts. ------- "I may be slow, but at least I'm sweet!"

Discussion Threads with Multiple Pages

anybody else as ignorant as me?
Zuckerruebensirup replied to worldtraveler's topic in General geocaching topics
I've been caught by this a couple of times, myself. I'd like to see the links take us directly to the last page, as opposed to the first one. ------- "I may be slow, but at least I'm sweet!" -

Discussion Threads with Multiple Pages
Zuckerruebensirup posted a topic in General geocaching topics
Several times, I've caught myself responding to a message that I thought was the lastest one...only to notice AFTER I've replied, that there were multiple pages to the thread. (And obviously, I'm not the only one who's been burned by this, since it's been brought up before.) I've noticed that the main Groundspeak Forum page lists the latest postings for each forum category, and that those links take you directly to the newest post. On the Forum directory pages, though, the links take you to the beginning of each thread. I assume it's that way so we can read the whole story, from beginning to end, before making our comments. But personally, if there's more than one page, I've probably already visited the thread before, and am familiar with the gist of what's been discussed. (Plus the quote feature makes it fairly simple to follow discussions, even if I don't scroll back up to the beginning.) Anyway, I was curious how everyone else feels about multiple page threads. Hence, my poll question: For discussion threads that have multiple pages, would you prefer the link from the directory page take you to the FIRST page (as it currently is), or to the LAST page (so that you can quickly scan the latest post(s) for the thread)? -
How often do you do maintenance on your caches?
Zuckerruebensirup replied to Harrald's topic in General geocaching topics
I play it by ear with my caches. Factors are: how much time I have, what the weather is like, how many visits have been logged, feedback contained in the logs, etc. If all is looking good, and activity has been slow, I try to visit them at least every couple of weeks. ------- "I may be slow, but at least I'm sweet!" -

quote:Originally posted by RJBS: It's interesting in that there are a bunch of whiney messages about "rookies" and "newbies" not knowing how to manage the bugs. I came here because of a post that a veteran entered today, where he said that he recovered several bugs in my area, but can't move them in the immediate future. I then emailed him to ask why he retreived them if he couldn't move them. It seems to me that "newbie" and "rookie" are not necessarily the right labels. Like everything else in life, doing something for a long time doesn't always mean doing it well. You're absolutely right. Newbie's do tend to take a lot of the blame for things that don't go smoothly here. In many cases, I believe they get blamed because it seems more excusable to do something wrong when you're new, and therefore less offensive to have it pointed out. On the other hand, to blame things on "idiots who can't read/follow directions and/or inconsiderate people who refuse to practice common courtesy" is likely to get a lot of people ticked off. So, to save face and to save arguments, we point out the errors that "newbies" are making...and hope that the message will sink in to those others, as well. ------- "I may be slow, but at least I'm sweet!"

Or was Stockley_true asking about cache logs, rather than travel bug logs? ------- "I may be slow, but at least I'm sweet!"

Collectible Items as Travel Bugs

Yes, I'd take them out of the boxes. If you don't, chances are someone else will anyway. I've seen people post photos of their dog chewing on a travel bug, with a comment saying, "Don't worry, he was gentle." I imagine that over time, all of our travel bugs will start showing some wear and tear, just through the process of changing hands. ------- "I may be slow, but at least I'm sweet!" -

Terrain/Dificulty Rating
Zuckerruebensirup replied to Team GPSaxophone's topic in General geocaching topics
quote:Originally posted by Cheesehead Dave: What I was thinking was putting a rating drop-down on the reporting page (which would only be visible if you found the cache, so people who report a no-find don't give it a five by default) When you view a cache page, it would avarage out everybody's rankings to give a third ranking besides the two that the cache owner gave it. I agree. Sure, we can state in our logs what we think it should have been, but averaged "finder difficulty/terrain ratings" at the top of the page would be helpful for future finders...who don't want to read through all the logs, and risk stumbling across spoiler info. ------- "I may be slow, but at least I'm sweet!" -
I've seen a couple of threads discussing this. Try here, here, or here. Personally, I think the clue should make it fairly obvious, but at the same time, be somewhat fun or creative (but not frustratingly confusing). I've also thought it would be cool if there were two levels of hints: "Hint" (for those who just want a nudge) and "I give up!" (for those who are tired of looking, and just want to log the find and be done with it). The 'Hints' I've encountered that really tick me off are ones that say, "Bring a frisbee, there's a disc golf course here." or tell you where to park or something. I've even seen ones that give a website address...as if we all have a wireless internet connection with us in the woods. (Do people not understand that the intent of these is not to look at them until you're at ground zero, and are truly stumped?) Argh! On a lesser level, unnecessarily LONG clues are another pet peeve of mine. ------- "I may be slow, but at least I'm sweet!" [This message was edited by Zuckerruebensirup on May 06, 2002 at 08:53 AM.]
