  1. Went caching the other day at GCK2GA and found a recently used homeless encampment. There was a gurney type bed there that I took a picture of. Photography is a hobby so I always have my gear with me
  2. other cachers put them out as proxy TB's. Bascially, they want a TB released into the wild but they don't want to lose their TB so they release those.
  3. as much as this sort of thing annoys me, I don't imagine that much can be done "Hello, officer, I left something under a tree in my local park, and someone came and took it. Can you please do something about it ?" after they stopped laughing, they would probably recommend that you quit leaving things under trees in your local park That's correct. As an LEO in the state where this happening (allegedly), the police won't do anything. By placing the item in the cache it can be argued that you have relinquished ownership.
  4. Like all professions and people it just depends. Some areas have higher areas of cachers (LEO and non) than others. The guys at work rib me about my hobby but they are also interested too. I have only seen one bulletin on geocaching and that was after the bomb squad disabled the one in Anaheim, CA recently. There's a thread on here about that. All of the advice on here about being honest and the other things is on the money. I let people of all walks of life "get away" with stuff if they are honest with me. It is also refreshing because we are lied to constantly. I would also like to add please be nice and respectful on top of that. That is refreshing too. Use common sense, don't put your hands in your pockets or rush up on the cop nervously. You're worried about us and we're worried about you. Once we realize you're just a nerd on a scavenger hunt with a multi-billion dollar sattelite system, you'll find we're human. Yes, that was said sarcastically. Part of that common sense is being aware of your surroundings. Many parks at night in an urban area may not be a good idea. People in a park at night or other places at night will raise the eyebrows of cops if you're seen. There are certain times of night where the only people out and about are cops and crooks. There are some places and times (combination) that if I see someone I will find a reason to talk with them. I'm afraid I have gone on a bit of a tangent there...sorry.
  5. So there is a difference if a cache has been "temporiarily disabled" and archived. I refer you this cache. Would an NA be appropriate?
  6. As a newbie to these forums but not to forums or the internet (or life) in general, I think this is a good thread. I know what the OP is talking about and I know what the responders are talking about as well. If nothing else it is a good reminder to look before we verbally leap.
  7. Agreed to all of the above. I just released a few of my own bugs and am quite happy with them. Especially BrownBeard the Pirate TB3F6J9. I am curious to see where they go and what happens to them. I have to admit to some trepidation though with the frequency TB's go missing. I'm using braided cable and ferules so hopefully that will help. I read a post where someone sent out a notebook and asked others to sign, mark, draw and otherwise creatively contribute to it's journey. Yep, I already bought a notebook
  8. HH242, could a stock FJ Cruiser make it out there?
  9. This is an interesting question as the Prescott Patrol approaches 100 caches found. I have a few kids from the teens down. I think this depends on the type of person (people) caching. I really like Alabama's answer. But, this is probably because it closely resembles our situation. I have also taken care to place my own cache's with Alabama's guidelines in mind.
  10. Questioning the competency of the USPS is hardly a flame The incompetency in this case though was with someone else. I had told them I was expecting a package. They thought this meant "box" and had never considered to look for a large envelope. Meh, no big deal in the end. I just can't afford to up and lose $60 on a hobby at this point in my life. Nah, second issue is different and I am sure it will be resolved amicably. Thanks all for your input
  11. The first issue has been resolved. Thankfully the USPS was actually competent this time. It was a mistake made at the location where the package was shipped to.
  12. You can get a clear plastic squirt gun and a very unrealistic looking knife. As long as someone is not pointing it at a cop I see no issues. Then again we did just get a briefing item on this
  13. Unless I am in an extraordinarily beautiful place I don't carry mine. I will carry my point and shoot. But when i do carry it, I will put the back pack on first and then sling the camera over my shoulder
  14. I ordered some items from a geocache store and paid via paypal. The echeck cleared and per the USPS tracking number they provided me it has arrived. Yet, I don't have it. I can't look up the order on their website (never had that happen before) so there is no way for me to check on that endd. I have the paypal receipt but as long as there is a USPS delivery confirmation number they won't be able to help me via their dispute process. I don't recall insurance being offered but honestly don't know if I would have purchased it anyways. If I go to the vendor he is just going to point to the USPS confirmation number. I have another order from another store where payment cleared a week ago but has not shipped yet. Just venting.........
  15. I carry a back pack that has all my geocache stuff in it as well as all the geocache stuff that my three kids need. I'll modify the contents per the terrain we are going into. We don't do big hikes because they're just not up for it yet. Mandatory items for me are water, first aid kit, smartphone, GPSr, swag, pen, paper, extra logs, bags and sometimes even a cache container. One thing though that I do carry that most don't is my firearm. I realize this is out of the ordinary in this community (or most).
  16. I'm planning a trip to see a museum with the fam and would also like to hit an "epic" cache in LA
  17. I got an okie doke from the wife for this one so it is on the calendar
  18. I am camping at Convict Lake the same week with a few road trips planned so this thread was perfect timing
  19. Very stunning coin. Well done
  20. Looks like I have access to a four foot tall two foot wide freestanding commercial water meter box Similar to this, only smaller I am looking to make it into a TB hotel that is going to take some puzzle solving to get open.
  21. Why hasn't your friend contacted the local authorities?
  22. Unless there is theft of federal property the USPS isn't going to give a rat's behind about the loss of stamps from a third party. This includes those little stationary stores that have miniature USPS kiosks in them I would also like to know what violation of federal law (what statute) is being violated by placing a magnetic cache on a mail receptacle. Being LEO I'm a little different but I CCW everywhere. If my gun doesn't go, I don't go except for rare occasions.
