  1. Thanks FunnyNose - I'll swing by OfficeDepot and get a pack. The cache will be a micro/mini so there won't be room for a pen or pencil. All of the caches I've come across with waterproof paper worked with a "normal" pen.
  2. I was hoping it wouldn't be as "specialized" as what it looks like. I guess finding it at Staples or Office Depot is out of the question.
  3. Have you tried emailing other cachers who already solved/found the cache?
  4. We're thinking of placing our first cache but would like to use waterproof paper for the log. Where can you buy it??
  5. Wow, this looks pretty cool. Thanks for posting the link Ether Bunny - I have to try this on my 260. Any advice on what size SD card to get for my 260?
  6. Another thing to keep in mind is that handhelds are waterproof - you'll eventually get caught in the rain (or a drippy cave). Not to mention a little more forgiving if you drop them.
  7. I was just planning to to go with the Etrex H for $89.97
  8. Worst we found so far were used needles near the cache - not in it. Also found a knife in the bushes where a cache was hanging in the tree above. That one was a little scary because we just saw the end of it and it looked a little like a micro canister...thankfully I used a stick to poke it first and saw what it really was.
  9. I've been looking around and Amazon has some good prices and free shipping. Link Amazon
  10. I guess we must be doing somehting right, both kids put a GPS on their Xmas list! I found the Etrex for under $90 on Amazon with free shipping - I wish I paid that for mine back in the day...
  11. Zoom out so you can see the US and then click and drag with the mouse. It will highlight until you let go out the mouse button.
  12. Hmm - interesting. Come to think of it I just Enabled WAAS before all this started happening. Thanks for the reply!
  13. OK - I'm loaded now... Don't know what the hang up was.
  14. I've been sitting here "installing" my TOPO 2008 software for over 30 minutes now...it seems to be hanging up with about 1/5 to go. Should it really be taking this long?
  15. Thanks Era, I was hoping someone else experienced it and hopefully it won't happen again anytime soon!
  16. I had my Vista plugged into the car on the way home from caching today and all of a sudden the screen went blank (except for a solid vertical line about 1/3 over from the left edge). GPS would not do anything. When I got home I removed the batteries and reinstalled (same ones) and it seems to be working again. Has anyone else experienced this before?
  17. Another nice thing is handheld GPS R's are coming down in price. I was lucky to get a deal on a Garmin Vista a few years ago, but the color Vista's are about the same price I paid.
  18. Like my waistline, I need to do more 4 and 5 star terraine caches!
  19. I was playing around at lunch and was surprised how many books there are now on Geocaching. I remember when I started there was only one...not that I've been in it that long.
  20. Does anyone have an old V6 or new V7 they don't need/use for sale? I'd like to try it out during this summer's vacation trips with my Vista.
  21. Are there any easy to find caches in the 2067 postal code that can be found without using a GPS? We're coming to Sydney from the US on business for a couple of weeks and would like to place a TB while there.
  22. Thanks for the replies - and sorry if I posted this in the wrong section. My kids are bugging the heck out of me to get one so we can go Geocaching RIGHT AWAY! I think I'm going to place an order with Office Max for the Vista - that seems like a really good deal. Thanks again for all the help and I hope to see some of you out there caching away in southeastern PA.
  23. Well it's been less than a week since a friend sent me a link to this site and I'm already hooked (not to mention my 6 and 9yr old boys!). I'd like to spend $200 or less and it looks like the Garmin eTrex and the Magellan eXplorist series are the popular models. I guess I'm kind of leaning towards an eTrex and have been watching eBay for prices: $100 for the "yellow" one, $150 for the Legend and $200 for the Vista. Questions for the non-GPS-challenged : 1. Are there any other places on-line or off that have better prices? 2. Are the base maps installed in the Legend/Vista useful as is or will I need to buy another couple hundred dollars worth of software to really use the Legend/Vista? 3. Is one of the 3 significantly easier to use than the other? 4. Vista owners - do you really use the electronic compass and altimeter? 5. I'd like to use it in my car (to track speed and use maps if it has that capability), do they all work in your vehicle? Sorry for all the questions....
