  1. From a very recent cache log: "took dollar left canadian nickel"
  2. Still using the same Garmin 12 I got in 99. Some of my caching buddies make fun of my relic but I have 2 other caching friends that still use 12's.
  3. Has the fire made it into the Wilderness area? This is very dissapointing. So many homes and cabins have gone up in smoke and one of favorite play areas is a burned mess.

    Your Ride

Here is my main "caching rig/backwoods hotel" parked at the trailhead to Schafer peak:
  5. The outdoor shooting range I regularly frequent and compete at has a cache hidden within. When I found that cache there was an entire box of EVIL 7.62X39 ammo. I made sure I promptly removed the offensive trade item and later "destroyed it". For future reference, if caching in northern Idaho and you leave or find any of the following calibers, please let me know so I can remove and destroy as well: 9mm, 357mag, 40s&w, 45acp,....
  6. In the Spokesman Review today, there is a short article on people burying their deceased pets in the Dishman Hills Natural Area (Spokane, WA). This is a quote from the Dishman Hills Natural Area Association: "We have no choice but to remove these sites (referring to the pet gravesites), as we have with geocaches, letter boxes and transient camps." "These special interest activities really have no place in public natural space and they encourage people to do off-trail hiking, which we feel has too much environmental impact." It looks like there are still several Geocaches listed in the hills. Have they actually removed any? They might be disappearing soon Glad to see that geocaches and letter boxes are lumped in with grave sites and transient camps
  7. It amazes me that people fret and froth at the mouth at the thought of an ammo can hidden out in a wilderness area that might be found 5 times per year. However, the string of pack horses that leave road apples every 25 feet, muddy up the trail beyond belief when wet and then trample huge sections of meadows are A-OK. In the overall picture of things that are allowed in designated wilderness areas, geocaching is one of the lowest impact items. There is even a push to start a new mine in the Cabinets Wilderness Area. An ammo can seems a little petty in comparison. My opinion is true of wilderness areas around central/northern Idaho. This may not be true elsewhere.
  8. That's him. Even from a distance, I knew I didn't want to bump into him.
  9. Did you come in from the Twin Sisters (or nearby)? When I did the cache on the Sisters, a guy to the east was hollering (many people have noted this in their logs). He lives in the house just east of the Sisters. I certainly wouldn't want to walk past him
  10. Here is one from a cache trip in the Seven Devils. The cache is on top of the peak on the right (He Devil).
  11. My pack weight for an overnighter (minus food and water) tends to be a little heavier than for multiple nights just because I know that I won't be lugging it for that long. However, as I get older, my pack gets lighter. When I was 19, 50 lbs was no problem. Top pin is right though - 35-40 lbs is about all I want to carry now. I am still lightening up as I go and replace heavy gear with lighter. If my wife is going with me, my pack will be a little heavier. We try to keep hers under 25 lbs with food and water. I guess I'm the pack mule when she's around The part of my body that really suffers is my feet. The heavier the pack, the more they hurt.
  12. Would you guys and gals mind a dry-sider tagging along? I'm very interested in giving this one a shot.
  13. Drawing a very crude route on Topo! makes it out to be about 37 miles. Add at least 10%. So, 40 miles give or take. It looks like it would be "easier" to go from Slate to Billy Goat elevation wise.
  14. Looks like a good one. It would be cool if you could leave a rig at both Slate Peak and Billy Goat Corral and then hike all the way through.

    Bear Attack

From what I've read, you want to fight back if attacked by a black bear. When they attack, they are interested in having you for dinner. Brown's will often attack to show you who is boss and fighting back just pisses them off.
  16. I was already hiking through quite a bit of snow last weekend. Maybe I should move to Alaska where you get an extra week of summer
  17. All four of Pullman's caches are regular sized! I think that's better than 80:20 Oops - I just remembed that we have a webcam cache. Not sure what that does to our ratio.
  18. Geocaching.com Add New Log=http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx?ID=%gcid is what I added as a Custom URL to GSAK. I right click any cache in GSAK and select Geocaching.com Add New Log and it opens the log page. Neat and quick! Excellent! This is a very handy tip for those using GSAK. Thanks.

  20. Unless you're Logscaler, of course.
  21. I've done Powerdpuff and Chandler Butte. You can drive fairly close to both of these in a passenger sedan but it is very slow going. With a more rugged vehicle, it is no problem. The final grade up to Chandler might be better walked if in a passenger sedan.
  22. Just this morning I removed a tick from the small of my back. It wasn't engorged with blood yet (I picked it up yesterday). Talk about a bad case of the heeby jeebies
  23. My cache, Last Tree Standing was mauled by a bear. It was originally in a plastic container which started life as a food container. Of course, it was hidden in the middle of a huge huckleberry stand so he must've been bored too. Anyway, cache is now in a more bear-proof container.
  24. Congrats!!! It's also more impressive knowing that number includes every physically challenging one around. Good job!
