  1. I am still unable to edit my Waymark, but I can edit another declined Waymark without trying to choose a different category.

Sometimes there are folks here who can fix problems.  If anyone is able, can the 3 Dimensional Art category be assigned to WM15A9H?  If it has a category assigned, perhaps it will get over the uncategorized loop.

  2. I have tried this multiple times with the same result.  Clicking on "edit" from the decline notice or from my profile list gives the same error message.  Waiting a while and trying again, gives the same error message.  I can submit it as uncategorized, but I cannot edit it.

The old (declined) category was removed, but I cannot choose a new category.

The mister (ted) has the same problem.

I have another to edit, using the same category.  I'll wait to do that one, in case the problem is editing rather than just changing categories.

Hopefully Monday will bring some repair work.

  3. I am here to learn what to do with a Waymark that is outdated.  This sounds like the same topic.  I posted a Waymark for a visitor center and now that visitor center has moved.  What should be done with the Waymark?  (WM145EP)

Update the Waymark with new coordinates and photo and website?

Put  "REMOVED" somewhere in the Waymark (where?) as suggested above?   And post a new Waymark for the new location?

We've seen a few other Waymarks in town for which the business is gone, but haven't noticed that they were updated.

We tried to go to the (old) visitor center today and didn't know it had closed until we got home and I asked google when the open hours were.

I feel sad that my Waymark is now not helpful.

Have they been Waymarked AT their present location? If not, do it!!

    Keith

Sort of.  Two Kissmobiles have switched locations.  The license plates of the Chocolate World and the auto Museum Kissmobiles show that they have been switched.  I added the third at the school, but ted was told that he couldn't add the old locations with the updated licence plates.

  5. It's an iphone.  I'm not sure which version of the lab app.  We didn't know there were different ones.  (It is "ted's" phone, as I have a flip phone and really, really dislike the app phone only stuff.)  We did repeatedly tap "search this area" after moving the map around and zooming in and around on the known location (central PA).  We can see the ones in eastern PA - dormont and treasure lake.  We can see ones in Maryland, New Jersey, etc.  I'm not sure what the discover or explore buttons are and will look for them.  Thank you for some things to try.

  6. Greetings.  Our town has a new adventure lab series of five locations.  Several cachers have already found them, so we know the general area of town where they are located.  But the app won't show them to us.  We have moved the map around, moved the map in and out, yet the "search here" says no lab caches found.  It shows us labs in other areas when we move the map to those areas.  But it will not show us the ones a few miles from us when we focus there on the map.  What can we try?

I asked one of the finders if he had a special invitation, if it were private.  I was told he had nothing special to find it.

In your mind, what is a high quality geocache?

Factors which can improve the geocaching experience might be, the listing, the container, the  puzzle, the location.  Even a micro can be fun if it is hidden in a decorative host.

Things that do not improve the geocaching experience can be flimsy containers, lack of information such as helpful attributes (are we allowed to be there at night? are the dogs allowed?), wet contents, or a questionable location (homeless camp or trash dump).

    • What steps can the community take to improve geocache quality?

We used to have a local lonely cache challenge which encouraged visits to caches which hadn't been visited in a while.  Some of these caches simply got fresh online logs and some were referred to the Reviewer for action.

I don't feel that posting a dnf, needs maintenance, or needs archived is a bad thing.  I see it as helpful.  I didn't used to post dnf's until I saw a Challenge cache which required the finders to have posted one hundred dnf logs.  This encouraged me to be a better geocacher by posting dnf's.  Alas, the cache is archived now that I have many more than a hundred dnf logs.  This sort of Challenge was deemed negative, so Groundspeak is calling the dnf log a bad thing?

Events geared towards introducing geocaching to the community or to building cache containers could be helpful.

I cache with a GPS unit and log later from my computer.  Many (all?) of the new ideas encourage only caching with a phone.  Please don't shut us out.  For instance, the related web page option is taken away from me because of phone users.

Could the phone app encourage more useful logs?

Do not require every one to have found so many caches to hide one.  But the idea of waiting some days might be beneficial.

Improve the Wherigo builder.  The only reason new WherIGos are being created is because of outside builders.  We have found some really creative and fun WherIGos, but these were only possible because of the outside builders.

The comment I see here a lot, and agree with, is that the next souvenir promotion encourages quantity over quality.  There is still time to change it to be more meaningful.  "Find a hundred caches" really lacks imagination.  Add in favorite points, older caches, cache types, etc in some manner.  You're encouraging lots of boring caches to be found rather than interesting caches that often take more effort.  There is still time to improve this.  Add extra points for attending an intro or building event.  Add points for favorited caches.  Add points for finding older caches.  There is still time to make this souvenir promotion emphasize quality finds.

I don't know what the cache health score is and don't know what score my caches have earned.  Would I know this if it were bad?  If I haven't been told my caches' scores are bad are they good?

Award another round of Virtual rewards each year.  And let us know the reason why each was awarded.  I really like another suggestion above to allow historical Virtual caches.  Surely this could highlight some interesting places in National Parks.

Allow a certain number of new web-cams in each state/province/area.  No, we wouldn't want one on every corner.  But we want some.

I like the favorite points and we often seek out caches that have been awarded favorite points.

  8. What do you like most about challenge caches? They are twice the fun - giving an additional goal to find or accomplish. They can push a geocacher to try new things or push further to test limits.

What do you not like about challenge caches? That some apparently are unable or unwilling to read a cache page. I dislike the challenges which only allow caches published before a certain date, as it implies that no future cache can be well placed/rated/etc.

What would you like to see changed about challenge caches? An attribute? It would have been nice to have had a new icon/type from the beginning, as adding one now poses the problem of retroactivity. A challenge rating? Qualifying for a DeLorme challenge is certainly more difficult than qualifying for a 10 souvenier challenge. But those who don't understand the challenge concept wouldn't understand a rating, either. Should the word "challenge" be reserved for challenge cache titles only?

If you could describe your favorite challenge cache type, what would it be? One which pushes me to try something new. For instance a challenge to find so many benchmarks or discover so many trackables pushes me to interact with geocaching in positive ways that maybe I hadn't before. I only began to log dnf's when I saw a challege to have logged 100 dnf's. It was archived (and no longer publishable) before I accomplished the goal, but it did help me to be a better logger and more helpful to others.

What types of challenge caches do you avoid? None yet.

  9. I placed a Challenge cache (move/discover at least 42 trackables) to get more geocachers to notice the tags and coins. I've had fun qualifying and finding many Challenge caches, some got us to get to different states or concentrate on benchmarks or something else different for us. It wasn't until I saw a cache (gone when I finally qualified) that required 100 dnf's that I began logging my dnf's. I guess my point is that I enjoy the Challenge caches.

We travelled over 400 miles to another state and found a cache in each of the DeLorme pages. We spent several hours (the latter half in a thunderstorm) getting to the DeLorme Challenge cache to sign the log. By the time we got back home, the DeLorme Challenge cache had been archived. A request that we could log it was denied by the cache owner. It was a while before a new DeLorme Challenge cache was placed and even longer before we could return to find the new one. It did put a damper on our experience. The silver lining was that we also returned to a dnf in the state and had success and it was a very good cache. It is overall a lovely and friendly state.

I feel that three months is a short time for any cache. But there are so many reasons why a cache might be archived that no guidelines could help some.

  10. Thank you (as usual) Keystone. Thank you to those who offered advice. We tried to add numbers to a photo 640 wide, but it sure looked clumsy. We have the uploaded photo on the cache page with fuzzy numbers and a link to the nicer, number-readable copy also on the cache page.

I've seen a disclaimer on some cache pages when downloading is required. Is the disclaimer needed for a link, too? Something like Groundspeak has not virus checked this?
