  1. What size of SD cards are they using for the preprogrammed map cards? If there is any memory left over, could it be used for storing other types of data? On the other side of the coin, say the preprogrammed card is a 2gb. Would it be possible to to transfer that data to a larger SD card, say an 8 or 16gb? Just curious. The pre-programed card can be copied, but there's something embedded in it that will not allow the copy to run. Bill
  2. Started with a Garmin GPS 12 and "graduated" to a Garmin GPS II+, both fine receivers. Small monochrome screens, but they did the trick. Used them mostly for hiking, and (big as they were) cycling. MooseMaMa lost the GPS 12 on a hike, and I gave the GPS II+ to a friend who lost his off the roof of his van. Wasn't long after that he lost the one I gave him off the rear bumper of the same vehicle . When SA was removed I got a little yellow eTrex........man we've come a long way . Bill
  3. The D's are shown at the bottom of the signal strength bars, on the satellite page, when you have WAAS enabled, and are receiving either of the WAAS satellites. D = Differential GPS, sometimes an indication of better accuracy, and lower EPE (Estimated Position Error). Bill
  4. It is my understanding that the MicroSD Card version is not locked, and can be used in any Garmin GPS receiver that takes that format, and has AutoRouting capability. The DVD versions are locked, have to be unlocked and use the valid GPS receiver's ID number so that CN only works on that articular GPS receiver. Here's hoping your transaction is problem free after receipt. Please let us know how it works out. Bill
  5. Dot...I'm gonna miss ya . Thank you for your outstanding service and support! That said, looking forward to the next time we get together . Bill
  6. I haven't taken the "plunge" to Ver 3.01b yet, but I've been reading your posts closely and it sounds pretty stable. I'm still using Ver 2.98b which has performed well in every respect....except, today I tried my first Wherigo Cache. Got through 3 zones just fine, at the 4th my 400t just shut down. I know many of the previous beta versions have Wherigo stability problems...has anyone tried a Wherigo with Ver 3.01b, and if so, how did that version perform? Thanks Bill
  7. I missed this topic when it posted too. We (MooseMaMa and I) use the 530HCx's when we cache together in "real" woods. They are fantastic, both with radio communications and as outstanding performers geocaching. I (think) the 530HCx uses the MediaTek chipset...it's proven reliable, great reception, solid locks...haven't found any bugs in more than 2 years of heavy use. I highly recommend the device. Bill
  8. After reading all these original responses to Ver 2.99b, I decided I'm not going to load it - Ver 2.98b has been working well for me. That said, my hat is off to all of you who've taken the plunge, and I thank you for the immediate feedback. I'm sure Garmin will sort through all of this - actually, it is you who are providing Garmin a great service. Bill
  9. Hello....As far as I know there is no "formal" (or informal for that matter) rating system for DC area caches; however, many have bookmarked the caches which could indicated some level of satisfaction/interest. The bookmark link below might be a good place to start. You'll find the Virtuals very interesting, and there are also a number of Traditional caches. If you use the Metro System (train) you'll be able to hunt caches in DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Have fun, be safe, and enjoy your visit. http://www.geocaching.com/bookmarks/view.a...80-ebdbdf05e04c Bill
  10. Tequila, I had that exact thing happen to me a day or two ago...it auto-saved the current track using the exact same "ID" you listed, then did it again using another string of random numbers.........what the heck???? I was able to delete both files after connecting as a mass storage device, and just selecting and deleting them from the Garmin/GPX location. Hasn't done it again....but now I'll always wonder. Wish I had saved and sent those files to Garmin...if you haven't deleted yours yet....please send them in with an e-mail. Billl
  11. I have Ver 2.98b loaded, and over the course of the past couple of weeks have been very pleased with it. I believe tracklog recording is better than with previous beta versions; however, it is still a little "jumpy" at walking speeds - on the road it's great. Noticed something interesting when geocaching though...under wide open skies the EPE stays fairly low (10 to 14 feet), but under heavy canopy it varies widely (20 to 70 feet); however, the countdown Distance to Destination will consistently lower as I approach a geocache. It's gotten to the point where I completely disregard the EPE when it's high - just watch the Distance to Destination count down to a few feet...and by golly, there's the cache!! In effect, the accuracy is great -- the EPE, not so much . Anybody else noticing the same? Bill
  12. It's still there. Garmin :drive > Garmin > startup.txt I had the personalized Start Up screen working fine with Ver 2.97b, but I cannot get it to work/show with Ver 2.98b...........sigh. Bill
  13. I spent 3 days caching last week in Virginia Beach, using my Oregon 400t with Ver 2.98b installed. I was successful in finding 37 caches, had no incidents of the unit turning itself off, but I did notice rather "flaky" reception and a wandering compass needle under heavy leaf canopy. Under wide open skies I enjoyed 8 to 10 feet EPE. Because of past "problems" with previous software versions I carry a 60CSx as "backup"...under the same heavy leaf canopy it performed flawlessly beside the 400t - 10 feet EPE, solid reception, and a steady compass needle. I fear there is still some work to be done on the 400t..........sigh. Bill
  14. Hi Doug, Welcome to what may just become an obsession . Please take a look at the NoVAGO website (http://www.novago.org) the largest geocaching organization in N. Virginia. I'm betting there are members who also live in, or very near to Fauquier County. There's a wealth of information there, and some really terrific folks. Bill
  15. Garmin finally answered my e-mails (3) as well, and announced Ver 2.98b. I loaded it...crossed my fingers, and went out to acquire. Wide open sky view, east coast, locked on to 10 satellites, with WAAS, best EPE was 9 feet. I really have my fingers crossed that this version will do the trick. I'll test it some tomorrow, and extensively next week on a trip to Virginia Beach. Bill
  16. Just about the same time my 400t "lost its mind"...see post #121 . The difference is...no "magic" here, it's just after 9PM and my birds have not come home to roost. I know Garmin is working on this...too many e-mails to ignore (I hope)...guess what bothers me the most is - I cannot "trust" the Oregon! Bill
  17. Ok...I'm just about at the end of my Oregon 400t's lanyard . 4PM EDT today, my Oregon with Ver 2.97b installed...lost all but 3 satellites (no greyed out satellites on the screen either)...it barely held a lock on 14, 22, and 30 (all overhead) EPE 116 feet. So...tried a little experiment - placed my 60CSx right beside it, quickly acquired and held lock on 1 (yes, 1), 14, 16 20, 22, 29, 30, 31, and 32 (from overhead to horizon) EPE 15 feet. Both receivers were under a wide open sky view, neither had WAAS activated. If PRN 1 is "unhealthy" why did the 60CSx lock on?...and is it possible that PRN 1 is causing the Oregon problems? I've written Garmin twice with identical occurrences over the course of several weeks - they've yet to reply - will try again with this latest incident. Yup, end of my lanyard. Bill
  18. Embarrrassing to have to quote yourself - they just arrived. Bill
  19. Same here...ran 2 PQs almost 5 hours ago, they've "run"...but I haven't received them yet - no, gmail is not throttling. Bill
  20. I don't know what version of Mapsource you're using, I have 6.15.6 installed (NOTE: Many do not like that version, but it suits my purposes). When I download a GPX file via Pocket Query...the full cache name is displayed on the Mapsource map. Waypoint display is set to "Symbol & Name"; however, if I modify the original GPX file in any way (add waypoints, or add/delete individual geocaches) the next time I display the file in Mapsource only the GC codes display. Bill
  21. Bingo -- Tequila and jbar...you've probably e-mailed Garmin, but in the off chance you haven't...please do. I've e-mailed them each time "it" happened...didn't get a response though........sigh. I'm really hoping they are working on "it". Lots of folks report the exact same behavior. Bill
  22. That's the only thing I've found so far that will "fix" it....revert to a previous version (I used 2.86 too), then back to 2.97. Happened to me twice...but (knock wood) hasn't happened at all during the past week or so. Bill
  23. It's happened before.......deleting that gmapprom.img file . There was a response in another forum thread concerning that very thing...I immediately backed up my entire Oregon mass storage file(s) . Bill
  24. Where did you find the link to the old 2.5 file? I believe you can find it here, under the Oregon Webupdater 250.gcd file: http://www.gpsinformation.org/perry/oregon/ Bill
  25. I am fortunate enough to have both the 60CSx and an Oregon 400t. Since receiving the Oregon (6 months ago) my 60CSx was relegated to "backup" status, and I haven't used it since. Yes, the Oregon has a few "quirks & wrinkles", but Garmin has and is addressing those. I use the Oregon for both geocaching and vehicle navigation, and am delighted with its performance. Bill
