  1. Evidently (possibly) caused by yesterday's code release. As stated, they are aware of, and are working on it. It's a popular feature and I'm sure they'll get it fixed soon. Bill
  2. Have you used the radio "menu" to adjust the squelch levels? If not, give that a try as it may help. Bill
  3. I had the same "file corrupted, syntax error" problem a few times when I selected the Track Manager on my Oregon 400t...trying to delete the file(s) was maddening. I had success with 2 methods, but neither one of those 2 methods worked with all instances of those errored files. First I tried "Total Commander" a very powerful dual window file management program, you can read about it and download it if you wish here: http://www.ghisler.com/download.htm Total Commander worked to delete the errored .gpx file on two occasions, but it didn't work the third time. (Have no idea why). The third time I had the errored .gpx file I tried this (below) and it worked: 1. Open a command prompt (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt). 2. Change to the Oregon drive and "cd" to the directory with the messed up file. 3. Type "dir /x" (without the quotes) 4. The resulting directory list will have a column with the "old school" 8.3 version of each file name. 5. Make a note of the file name associated with your errored .gpx file - let's say your errored file is ly wa?Ú9 l clea ..gpx, and the associated 8.3 file name is LYWA9C~1.GPX 6. Type "delete LYWA9C~1.GPX" (without the quotes). I haven't experienced an errored .gpx file since the new final Oregon software version was released...and I really hope it stays that way! Good luck. Bill
  4. "Line of Sight" really is the key with GMRS radio, although it is possible to use a repeater on some of the RINO 520/530 bands - you'd have to clear use of the repeater with the "owner". I've had very reliable performance from my 530HCx's, even in heavy cover and in between hills and valleys. One thing your friend might want to check...the transmit power is selectable, to get the most bang for the buck...make sure they are transmitting on 5 watts, and not just 1 watt. That could make a difference. Bill
  5. A personal touch that went above & beyond - good on ya To stay OT, only found one cache yesterday, but it was a treat to place 09-09-09 on the log, and I did attend a "Nine Event GCZ54W". Bill
  6. Place Garmin's WebUpdater on your computer, connect your 400t to your computer as a mass storage device, run the WebUpdater and it will download software Ver 3.20 and install it on your 400t. Safely remove (eject) your 400t from your computer, turn the 400t back on and it will validate and run Ver. 3.20. That's it! Bill
  7. Although not as challenging as some already listed, this is probably the only one in my immediate N. Virginia area that may qualify. Bull Run/Occoquan Marathon (GC1X3MD) - 13 stages spread out over an 18 mile hike, with lots of fairly tough terrain. It was published last month, and as of this writing...is still unfound. Bill
  8. Using the "Mark Waypoint" feature is one way, another is select "Where To", select "Coordinates", type in the coordinates you wish to enter, hit the little green checkmark, and the GoTo is automatic. Those coordinates will be saved/named "Coordinates" in your Waypoints, you can edit the name later if you wish to save them in a file (PC, MapSource, GSAK, EasyGPS, etc.). Bill
  9. It's been some time since I fired up a 60CSx, but I believe if you page to the Trip Computer page, hit the Menu button, select Reset....a list of items to delete will appear. Place a check mark in those you want to reset/delete (Waypoints is one)...confirm the selection and they're gone. Bill
  10. Sure, select "Setup", select "Geocaches", select "Found Geocaches"...number pad opens, adjust your numbers, select the green check mark and that's it. Bill
  11. Splashy is correct..."angle" is everything. I have "old eyes", wear glasses, have a Zagg screen protector on my Oregon 550t, and can see/read it perfectly in bright sunlight...it may be necessary to tilt it a bit left/right or fore/aft...but that's an intuitive movement and very natural. Bill
  12. I believe this one is older: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...e7-1f9216caae07 Unable to find any active caches that predate "Mingo". Bill
  13. Yes you can use a screen protector...most recommend one from Zagg. WAAS capability must be selected/activated. Goto Setup, System, and select WAAS. Bill
  14. Okay...message received! Was not aware that it can hold so many caches. We like to travel and that will be great to load caches in for all the different areas. Thanks for that input, 550t it is! The Garmin website shows the 550 capable of holding 2000 waypoints not 5000. The Dakota can hold 1000. I believe that either can be loaded with custom POIs giving you paperless capability limited only by the microSD card capacity. Correct...that's 2000 Waypoints - plus 5000 geocaches (2 separate files). Wrong about the POI's on microSD card though. Not sure about the Dakota 20, but for the time being...you can only load maps (and possibly photos) on the microSD off the 550t. Bill
  15. I've not had that happen with my Oregon 400t, BUT I have experienced that very same twice on my Oregon 550t. Happened with both "saving" sequences: Mark then Save, Mark then Save & Edit Name. I reported it to Garmin...who hadn't heard of the problem, but referred it to their engineering department. I did a hard reset on the receiver and it hasn't happened since...but I'm wary Bill
  16. Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but try: Where To - Tides - (Select a location) - (tap the "balloon" ID at the top of the page) - and the date, times, and graphic for the location are displayed. Bill
  17. I've used pinecones as a stage container on three of my multi-caches...they just don't hold up very well over the long haul. After numerous repairs (hot melt craft glue, Gorilla Glue, wood glue, etc.) they still end up being destroyed. Pinecones just don't seem sturdy enough for heavy handed cachers. I've looked for "fake" pinecones in craft stores, but haven't had any luck finding them. Bill
  18. Take a look at Garmin "Motion Based" and/or "Garmin Connect"...not positive, but they may be able to accept, plot, display your HR data. Bill
  19. 3.10 I still don't see 3.10, the WIKI only shows 3.01. I have tried updating using WebUpdater and keep getting an error message that the "Update File is Corrupted". Anyone else ? Worked fine on my wife's 400t this morning. Make sure you have the latest version of WebUpdater downloaded and installed. I'm not sure of the version number. Bill
  20. Raine & OpinioNate...you've made this old man a very happy old man! Thank you so much for all that it took to compile and release this GE KML version. It more than rocks - it's "Slick". Bill
  21. All 3 profiles had Record and Show on Map selected (I get too "turned around" not to have a track log I can look (and hopefully intersect) at on a map). Bill
  22. Thanks for the comments....I realize that the 550t does not write to the SD card, and I checked the Current file under GPX in Mass Storage...they weren't there (the only thing in the Current file was the Track Log). Also transfered Waypoints and Tracks from the 550t to MapSource...the new waypoints I marked and "saved" today were not there....the only waypoints that showed up were ones I had previously copied to the 550t from file. Bill
  23. Two actually: First - I currently have 3 Profiles customized, General, Geocaching, and Automotive. I noticed that some settings are not "remembered" after the 550t is powered down. Specifically, I set the "Tracks" to "Record and Show on Map". Over the past three days it continually reverts to "Do Not Show" after the unit has been powered down for any length of time. Secondly - When marking a waypoint, and saving it (not Save and Edit, just Save) the 550t indicates that it assigned a sequential number...001, 002, 003, etc.. Today I relocated one of my caches and used the 550t to mark the new location. I took three or four readings, hit "Save" and saw that it was saved as a three digit number. Walked away about 200 feet, did a Where To, selected Waypoints, selected one of the three digit number waypoints I had just marked, and did a GoTo the marked location. Worked fine, compass arrow stayed steady and the distance to destination led me to within 5 feet of the marked coordinates. Came home...and I cannot find those four new waypoints that I marked and saved. They are not in the Waypoints folder under the Garmin GPX file, I see no other folders that contain waypoints, and they are not on my 550t when I search waypoints either directly, or through the Waypoint Manager. Maybe I'm missing something here, but they seem to have disappeared. They were not written to the MicroSD card (I have the CN North America NT MicroSD card installed. Has anyone else experience these anomalies, or can you tell me where those newly marked/saved waypoints might be filed. TIA, Bill
  24. Did I miss it?....yeah. Could I live without i?t....yeah. Am I glad it's coming back?....OH YEAH!! Thank you for all the hard work you put in to redesigning the capability. Bill
  25. Owned/hidden Caches, Waymarks, Benchmarks, and Found Caches, etc., can all go in the Oregon/Colorado as POIs. Each in a separate directory, and searchable by ID. Bill
