  1. On my PC I use GSAK and cachemate, but am trying to figure out the best way to try it with my mac. Since I already bought cachemate for my PC, does anyone know if I could use it also on my mac in conjunction with maccmconvert that was mentioned earlier?

I'm in the process of trying to figure out maccaching, does anyone know if gpsbabel is better?

Maccaching lists the caches by their GCXXXX number which I find hard to tell caches apart. I am used to GSAK where they are listed my their real names, even if abbreviated.

  2. I've finally got my paperless caching system running smoothly with my PC,60cs, IQUE, GSAK, and cachemate. I load up my units at home and I'm good to go.

I'm going on a road trip for a couple of weeks to South Dakota and Montana with kind of a loose itinerary. Not being entirely sure where exactly we'll end up, I'd like to load cache info into my gps units once we get there.

Here's my problem, my laptop is a mac, so what I have figured out so far is I could use GPSMACPRO or run parallels. I know absolutely nothing about either option so would appreciate pros and cons about them from anyone who has used them.

Also if anyone has a better solution I would love to hear it.

    Thanks

  3. Droo, I'm wondering if you decided to make the switch to mac and how it has worked out. I am wanting to get a laptop and would like to switch to mac but the only thing that has me hesitating is the ease that I am able to paperless cache with the windows programs I am currently using(GSAK and cachemate).

In most cases I could load up the caches on the PC, but part of the reason I want a laptop is to get new cache info while traveling. Does anyone know if it is possible to use the 60 CS on two different systems, for example usually using window and GSAK, but sometimes using a mac and whatever GSAK equivalent there is. Or do you have to choose one or the other.

    Thanks

  4. I have been considering getting a mac notebook but I love GSAK and cachemate as a combo for paperless caching. I had heard that it is possible to run windows on a mac, but I would guess that running windows would open your notebook up to viruses. Has anyone had issues with this? Any easy ways to paperless cache with a mac?

    Thanks

  5. So far I have only used my Garmin 60 CS for geocaching and street navigation, but am going to hike a few days on the AT and wondered if anyone had good experiences using trail maps on their GPS units. If so, could you also give me info about where to get the maps, approximate cost, etc.

    Thanks

  6. Thanks for the suggestions.

Impala Bob, sorry for my ignorance, but I'm not sure what the motherboard socket is. I've tried plugging in to every USB socket available both on the front as well as the back of the computer; the original ports and the two 2.0 ports I added on.

I have updated the drivers and the firmware with the most recent from the Garmin site. I didn't see anything called a software update.

I tried it today on a friend's computer who uses a different garmin gpsr and it was recognized immediately.

    Thanks again......

  7. OK, I'll try to summarize problems I've had for the past few months.

I have a 60 CS and use GSAK have been doing well without problems for over a year. I put in a USB 2.0 card and the next time I tried to load waypoints into the 60 CS it didn't work. I got an error message "Label 1, then error sending waypoints, error sending 12 bytes, 0 successfully sent." The 2.0 USB port works fine with other devices as do the old USB ports. I have tried the 60 CS in all the ports.

Next I uninstalled and reinstalled all the USB ports and it worked! Mistakenly I thought all was well. A few weeks later I went to update my caches and it gave the same error messages. Again I uninstalled and reinstalled all the ports, but this time it didn't work. I kept doing it and on maybe the 3rd uninstall/reinstall it worked. Guess what? now it doesn't work again.

It does not seem to be a problem with GSAK, because if I go to mapsource and 'get unit ID' it does not recognize the device.

I called Garmin and after 2 hours of holding and trying a couple things they suggested updating the software version in the unit. I was able to do that on a friends computer and now have the most recent version and it still doesn't work.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!! My nephews are coming down to visit next week and we always go caching!!

  8. OK I uninstalled the one with the yellow triangle. Downloaded the exe driver file and ran it and rebooted. Unfortunately it still has the yellow triangle, but now the message is "windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing (code 39) "

I hope this makes sense to someone. Thanks again to all who are trying to help me!!

  9. Baloo & bd,

Thanks so much for trying to help me as I am now near suicidal and reaching VERY far above my computer skills. I don't even know what a driver is.

I think I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, but now in my device manager the garmin USB GPS has a yellow exclamation next to it and says "this device cannot start code 10. " The FAQ from Garmin say to use the add new hardware wizard, but it says it cannot find a better match. when I try to update the driver, I've tried it without a cd in,(I've also downloaded driver updates and mapsource update from the garmin site) I don't think I got a cd for the 60cs, but since I downloaded the drivers from the website it shouldn't matter.

I am willing to just take out the 2.0 usb card, but now I think I've created new problems, because now I am getting new error messages. Just to make sure I get it, I need to update the drivers for the GPS and also for the USB, and I should be able to get those from the Garmin website? Also, as far as uninstalling the drivers first, what I uninstalled was called garmin usb drivers. Hope that was the right one.

    Thanks

  10. Baloo and bd,

Thanks for your help-here is an update of what I have tried. My gps works fine on a friend's computer. When I connect it to my computer, it is listed as connected via usb, and it states the device is working properly. When I try to send with GSAK it gives me the error about "unable to send 12 bytes, 0 successfully sent. " I also tried to send with mapsource, and under device settings, when you click find device it says "some devices were found however none have the necessary capabilities." I have tried to download drivers, but it seems like its not connecting. I have tried it plugged into every usb port I have. I have tried other devices in those same usb ports and they work fine. In fact I downloaded the info from GSAK into my palm with no problems, I just can't send to the 60cs.

A couple of weeks ago I added a usb 2.0 card to my computer (my other usb ports are 1.1) this is the only thing I can think of that is new to mess things up, BUT the new ports work with other devices AND the old ports work with other devices, so it doesn't make sense (to me, anyway, I hope it does to someone out there) I truly am desperate, I've wasted my only 2 days to cache trying to get waypoints loaded.

    Thanks for any advice

  11. Thanks for the idea, but it didn't work either.I have seemingly tried everything. I've tried all the usb ports, even changed the settings for the GPS in GSAK, deleted and reloaded all the waypoints in GSAK, run the repair/defrag/remove for GSAK.

I am able to put the waypoints into cachemate on my palm using GSAK, and the same usb port that won't work with the 60 cs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, this is my second day trying to fix this problem. It worked just fine a month ago.

    Thanks

  12. Have used GSAK without problems for over a year. Haven't used for a month or so and today when I try to send the waypoints to my GPS, I get an error message"error sending waypoints error sending 12 bytes 0 waypoints sent". I tried it again and it flashed "label 1" repeatedly and I couldn't even get it stop by cancelling. I had to unplug the unit to get it to stop. Anyone with similar problems (or hopefully a solution)? I have the day off tomorrow and want to take the dog caching.

    Thanks

  13. Thanks for the help with projecting waypoints, the FAQs answered my question right away. I've looked through the other FAQs to try to make sure my GPSr is set to magnetic north, but couldn't find out how. Any help with that one?

Also, sometimes the bearing arrow points in one direction, and if you walk in the direction it points, the distance increases. If you walk in the direction opposite of the way it points, the distance decreases. What's up with that? I'm not sure why it only does it sometimes and not others. It doesn't seem to be related to calibrating the compass.

Thanks for all your answers to my questions!
