  1. if the legend has a projection feature it will make the job real easy. do the math on the reverse azimuth and then tell the legend to project a waypoint enter the bearing and distance and give the projected waypoint a name you will remember than enter. next find waypoint (you name it you find it) and follow the arrow. I did a multi last week that required me to project 5 times. I was glad I remembered how it worked.
  2. I don't live nearby but if I did I might drop by the security office and ask one of the officers if I could grab the bug from them and move it to a new cache off property. It occurs to me that since they took time to log it they might be prepared to help it move along too.
  3. that is patently untrue. Why here in Canada you can buy them from at least 1/2 dozen different companies none of which is Groundspeak. blamed foreign resellers.
  4. so now I have to call my mom and tell the certificate was bogus? I guess I better cancel the bush plane and the trip I had planned on taking with nothing but a penknife an out of date map and a cereal box compass, dang it all! I like my low standards, easier to achieve that way!
  5. I did better than I thought I might A+ cool
  6. sounds good so far, don't forget to take something tradable. from what I gather if your little one gets into the trading thing they will stay with you a little more easily. One bit of advice I heard a while back was to keep some things that your kid(s) would like in your pocket so if the swag in the cache is a little less than stellar they still get to trade. Bwmick
  7. I have run through two pair of oakleys in the last 6/7 years. last set were a pair of box(something) which had a nice frame size and worked well for everything from driving, motorcycling, driving, hiking ad nausium. they were made into prescription and I had them tinted with a brown serenghetti style tint. While driving in heavy snow (a common occurance come wintertime) I tried driving with regular galsses and the brown tint. I stopped trying to use normal glasses after about 5 minutes. The brown lenses let me see so much more in those conditions. I also love the contrast that they give. I see rainbows with them that people without don't.
  8. key word is supposed to be I did a 1/1 yesterday that required me to walk several hundred meters up a atv trail then bushwack 15 metres to get to the cache. not wheelchair accessible definitely not a 1 terrain

    So...what happened

I live in Northern Ontario. I am well aware of this wilderness you speak of. I didn't mean to be rude but was taken aback by your original post. A friend and I went caching yesterday. He drove down from the north and I drove up and met in the middle in a fairly cache dense area. Driving was required to go from cache to cache but at each spot we got out of the car and looked at the world that surrounded us. the most common statement made by either one one of us was, "wow I should have brought my camera." we came across a trail system that we will revisit to either hike/bike or ski season permitting, we found caches along a historic trail that taught us about the history of the geography, industry and people of the area. It was a great day, not due to driving or necessarily the caching but because I was hanging out with a friend. I wish you luck with your cache placements. I have found several caches that require the cacher to use orienteering skills (learned mine at Bark Lake Leadership Camp, good times). A point to remember though is that you need at least one long/lat point to get it listed. (the trailhead I would guess) then feel free to have us "head at a bearing of x for x metres, then go off at bearing x for x metres. I know I would love to try a cache like that. Not all caches are at the side of the road, the ones that i like the most make me get off my bike or out of my car and experience the world around me. I won't apologize for using the car or motorcycle to get there. All the caches that I can ride my bicycle too have been found already. enjoy the trek bryan

    So...what happened

you've been a member since May, what is this once upon a time you speak of. and it appears from your profile that you have enough experience hunting caches to ..... you wanna use a map and compass knock yourself out many people hunt caches exactly that way. you will get out of caching what you put into it, I know I do.
  11. All you really need is a gps a writing utensil and a sense of adventure. As to the type of GPS you will get a lot of varied opinions. My suggestion is get the best model you can afford. right now may be an excellent time to be a consumer too as Garmin just introduced a new series and the older ones should be at a bit of a deal soon. rumour has it that the vista is a good unit to use. Do your research on pricing lots of places will do price matching. As to maps they are not necessary but can be helpful, but then again I am a map geek so my opinion may be biased. I am saving up for topo Canada right now. If you buy a garmin gps you can download your waypoints directly from the geocaching website with a quick download from garmin. I have used this feature a few times and it works well. having said all that Personally I use GSAK, Mapsource and, cachemate (palm utility for paperless caching) to keep myself organized. GSAK is a shareware program that is very detailed and well thought out. It does have a steep learning curve but the things it does . But the most important thing to have is a sense of adventure and determination. the sense of adventure will keep you going out, the determination will keep you looking when it seems that the cache just isn't there. Enjoy BTW it may be possible that there is someone in your area who would be willing to show you the ropes.
  12. but, but, but, it's ALWAYS Happy Hour somewhere! you just need to check your time zones.
  13. this doesn't have anything to do with outdoors or GPS but I am always looking for high school volunteers to help me run the athletics at the k-6 I work at. phone some principals and see if they have anything before/after school you can help with. the legacy is the positive effect that you can have on the kids. they like me and enjoy the activities we do but they really look up to the high school kids who come and help out.
  14. Up here on Ontario you need 30 hours of time put in. and it's not for a specific class it is over and above regular class assignments. I believe it fits into the concept that if you teach kids that volunteering can be fun they will be likely to volunteer later in life. When I was younger I volunteered in a hospital - it had its moments but most of the time it was very cool. I met a lot of neat people that way.
  15. in town where I live we have alleys between houses. I believe that is a ROW in the country is a county/municipally owned passage where a road may go, also known as a road allowance). Also used to refer to hydro/gas lines they purchase a right of way through property that they can use to run their lines.
  16. Basemap will be fine, I believe for both north and south america. The real question is more likely to be does garmin honour warranty on items sold on E bay. I am not 100% sure, you might want to look into it. (best place to ask might me at the units and software forums. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showforum=11
  17. if you are looking to post cache specific pictures there is a link in your log that allows you to add photos. "upload an image for this log"
  18. I see your flame thrower and raise you a potato cannon.
  19. bottom right side of your account details page is a link to "send geocache browser to google earth" or http://www.geocaching.com/kml/buildnetworkkml.aspx
  20. I would probably just log it as grabbed from previous holder and start it off again.
  21. here is what seems to be a good tick removal system http://www.kk.org/cooltools/archives/001765.php Don't have ticks here but have heard horror stories.
  22. This is basically nonsense. If these things spontaneously combusted, even in rare instances, with hundreds of millions of vehicles, we'd be seeing car fires all over the place every summer. I've never in my life heard or read of a single instance of this happening. If it happens it is so rare as to be a non issue. A chunk of flint falling on an ammo box might be more of a danger. here's a link that seems to confirm that. http://mythbustersresults.com/episode65 If you don't like their science feel free to let THEM know. bwmick
  23. how do I convince my wife I NEED a GPSr. a few months later I was hooked.
  24. Flask you are totally awesome. Here you moan about people not taking you seriously enough and "making fun" of an issue you feel is important. Seems a bit of a double standard when in another thread you said you were happy to be a cancer to the thread. If you get to be one, shouldn't you be prepared to accept it when other people act as one to you? Bwmick
