  1. Yeah, I pretty much gave up on GSAK. I import directly to my Lowrance and use the Geocaching app on my iPhone to get me in the area. Oh well.
  2. Research has shown me that some cache names (especially those with a lot of symbols) can cause this issue. I am trying to find if there is an offending cache in my query. If anyone knows of any specific issues with a cache name I would appreciate the info. Thanks
  3. I changed the type to 1.0 (it was indeed 1.01) but still no luck. Here is the error I get: The C:\Documents and Settings.....the path name is here..../Geocache TourGuide.gpx is invalid. Do you want to continue? Any other ideas?
  4. Yes I use the POI loader and used this set up for years with no problems. In fact I used it in November 2012 with no problems. I wonder if there has been a change to the PQ format?
  5. Sorry if this has already been addressed...couldn't find a solution after searching. I have been using GSAK for a few years and I like to add PQs to my Nuvi to use while I drive around. Recently, my PQs fail to load to my Nuvi, I get a message that the file is invalid. I tried reloading an older (a few months ago) PQ that I have on my PC and it works fine. Has something changed with the PQ format recently? Thanks
  6. Thanks for asking. When I turn on WAAAS, I lose the satellite lock and it never returns. After I disable WAAS the GPS reestablishes the lock to the satellites.
  7. What I ended up doing was loading the recent software and deactivating the WAAS positioning. Now that I have it working again I'll probably try reactivating the WAAS. If it fails to lock again I'll just turn it back off. Thanks for asking.
  8. Does anyone know if it is possible to do a hard reset on the Lowrence Endura Out & Back? I have found several ways to reset other Lowrence GPSr but nothing for the Out & Back. Thanks
  9. Thanks for the kind words everyone. I do plan to add my own experiences once I get the basics out of the way. I wanted to start with the "how to" for those just beginning. I welcome any and all replies to the blog if you see fit. I would like to see some discussion develop eventually. Thanks for your interest.
  10. Thanks for the kind words Brooklyn51 and clockworkwizardry. I hope the information is helpful. I know that when I started geocaching I was clueless. My next post will probably be about travel bugs, how they work and how to properly log them. That seems to be a confusing thing for most people.
  11. Please, I'm starting to feel that you are spamming the forum with 'news' of your blog... I'm not spamming, I noticed that there were several people who had basic questions so I added a link. I have no ads on my blog so traffic numbers do not benefit me. I am just trying to help.
  12. Just bumping this up for anyone interested. Thanks

  16. If your phone can display your current coordinates, go to the hide spot and take down the coordinates. I suggest approaching from different directions then averaging the numbers. I usually take five readings and averaging them. Most likely the only number that will change are the last three digits.
  17. Geocaching is a great way to spend down time while traveling. I travel for work and grab some caches everywhere I go. So far I have found caches in 18 states.
  18. Hi Cachers, I have started a geocaching blog that goes over some of the basics of geocaching, the geocaching.com website and more (in the future.) Please stop by and take a look. I'm open for suggestions as well. Thanks! http://badfish2geocaching.blogspot.com/
  19. I think you're on to something. Often when I explain geocaching to people they ask if we just keep the cache.
  20. I had a strange occurrence happen recently and I wondered if anyone has had a similar experience. I checked on a hide and found it missing. I looked all around GZ but found nothing. I returned a week later with a replacement and there the original cache was, back in its original spot. I can only assume the person responsible read the "Congratulations, you've found it (intentionally or not!)" note, felt bad and replaced it. Has anyone else had this happen?
  21. I'm cheap so I usually do not buy containers. I collect anything that could be a container and wait for an opportunity to use them. I have several empty pill bottles, empty blood glucose monitoring strip containers, nut containers mint containers, coffee containers etc. I found a water jug (Thermos brand) that I washed out and sealed the openings. I'm waiting for an opportunity to place that one. I had to buy camo tape but I found a good size roll at Meijers for $5.
  22. First check to see if there are any Army/Navy or military surplus stores locally.
  23. I recently got permission to hide a cache in a city park where I live. I looked online for the parks and recreation director and emailed him. I wrote the email like this: Hello, My name is <your name here> and I live in <your town here>. I am writing you to ask for permission to place a small geocache in <park name> Park in <city>. I will include a brief explanation of geocaching in case you are not familiar with this hobby. From the geocaching website at www.geocaching.com: "Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups, with a strong sense of community and support for the environment." I then gave specific details such as the dimensions of the cache and where I planned to hide it. I assured him that the cache would have no negative impact on the park because I hid it in a place that would not require seekers to disturb the landscaping. I also stated that geocachers tend to know to respect the hide area. I did the same thing for two caches that I hid in nature reserve areas. I contacted the supervisor for the area and detailed my idea to him. I hid the caches so seekers would not need to go off of the trails or observation areas. I made sure to remind seekers to respect the preserve area and not venture into the wetland. When I asked about the second cache, the manager stated that my first cache had brought additional people to the area. I think it best to seek permission from the authorities. If you educate them about geocaching, they are more likely to approve. Good luck.
  24. I leave dollar bill rings. Search Google for dollar bill ring to get instructions. I have seen others leave $2 bills or silver dollars.
