  1. Interesting article in todays paper, financial section. Target 3qtr Revenues up 78%. They earned $537 million in Q3. And they couldn't offer the Legend C at cost? Next (if not already) they'll be outsourcing jobs to India, and laying off American workers. They really need to remember that without customers, they're out of business.
  2. PC Painter, Welcome to geocaching. It's a great hobby/sport/passtime that will bring you to new places that you never knew existed. Regarding a GPSr, IMHO there is no one unit that will serve all purposes. I also think that while color may be a "nice to have", it is not necessary for geocaching. You probably will eventually have two units, perhaps one for driving, one for caching. That being the case, I would start with a good caching unit like a etrex Legend or Vista. Then, later on, a good color unit for driving. Now you have opinions that are all over the place. Start out with a lower cost unit, cache for a while, and then you'll know exactly what suits you. You can always sell the low cost unit if you are totally not happy with it, and not get hurt too bad. Cost is not a major factor in ability to find a cache. A basic b&w unit will find a cache just as quickly as color. Most units are more than adequate so you can't make a wrong choice. Good luck and have fun.
  3. Any good business person who cares about customer good will, would have offered to sell the product at cost.
  4. Maybe in 2009, when the "Garmin Ten Generations from Now" comes out! I got the email also. Called to express my disapointment. Sent me a $20 gift Certificate. Big deal. After waiting a month, and then just an email with a lame excuse, it just don't cut it. He first said the manufacturer sent them a notice that they could not fullfill the order. Then I pointed out that they had Legend C's for sale on their web site. Then he came clean with the real story that it was a mistake. I think they should have honored it.
  5. Wow! Way to go niskibum! I'm rootin' fer ya. You played it just right. I also haven't received any notice, order still says "C", so hopefully I get mine soon. Good luck.
  6. niskibum, I ordered mine on Oct 12th., and it still says it should ship Nov. 12th. What date did you order yours? I am just wondering if I should be expecting something soon. I also have not received any notice, yet!
  7. If they indicated that a Legend C was coming, it gives you a lot more leverage if you want to negotiate. While they do not offer a Legend C Bonus Pack, the do sell the Legend C alone. You can demand a C Bonus Pack, and then be a sport about it and "settle" for just a Legend C.
  8. Do what you feel comfortable with. If you got a letter and want to leave it at that, then by all means do that. I did not get a letter, so I will stay put until they make a move. They can send me a letter, or send me the item I ordered, or send me an item I didn't order. Depending on what they do, then the ball is in my court, and I can decide what I should do.
  9. I am in full agreement. I placed an order for a Legend C. As far as I know, that's what they are sending. If I receive something else, then they made a mistake, and should provide a FULL refund, along with an appology and some atonement gesture ($20 gift cert). Unless I get an email before they ship, that's what I expect. If I do get an email, then the ball is in my court, and of course I'll cancel. Most reputable companies will stand behind their error. I am hoping Target is one of them. I'm hanging in there.
  10. Anyone that you suspect might jeopardize the security of the cache.
  11. Texan78, Good luck with your new unit. I use the Vista also, and I am very pleased with it. It will take a good 15-20 minutes the first time you turn it on, and maybe a good 5-10 minutes each time thereafter. I am not sure if it's my imagination, but it seems to lock in quicker if you are moving (walking). G O Casher
  12. Mom, is that you? Good ebay item. Come up with a good story and start the bidding at $500.00
  13. Welcome to the game, hobby, sport, passtime!
  14. OK, I got it now. That is not an edit screen to input a new name, it's a search screen to find an existing name. I can just "find by closest" if I prefer to scroll through the names. Thanks for the help, everyone.
  15. OK, I got a response from Garmin that also said to download and reinstall the OS software. So I performed the download / install, no success. I then tried as "Dog Knows" suggested, and deleted enough waypoints to get rid of the scroll bar. Sure enough, that fixed it. Problem is, that only allows for 9 waypoints. When you add the 10th., problem comes back. Very anoying feature. I'm surprised there is no way to turn it off. I did discover that if I hold the page button it closes the edit page, but why the extra keystrokes. Anyway, this may be a problem I have to live with. Thanks again, G O Casher
  16. Dog Knows, I think you hit the nail on the head. This is my second Vista and the same thing happened on the first (which I returned for another reason). I couldn't figure out what changed for this to occur. I am going to try deleting a few waypoints to see if that's it, then I just have to find out how to eliminate it. I also sent a note to Garmin support, and will post their response when I get one. I knew you folks would provide a clue a lot quicker. Thank you, G O Casher
  17. I go to the "FIND" menu and press enter. Highlight "Waypoints", press enter. Highlight "By Name", press enter. For some reason, it goes right into the "edit" mode, as if I am entering info for a new waypoint. It never used to do that until recently, then started doing it all of a sudden. Did I touch something to cause that? How do I get it back to the way it was, so it just alows me to select a waypoint? Thanks for your help, G O Casher
  18. Target web site says that the C usually ships in 2-3 weeks. So I called Target and asked why I am waiting over a month, and the ETA says December. I got a customer service woman who just kept repeating that if I wanted to I could cancel my order and reorder the one that says 2-3 week delivery. I asked why I would have to cancel my order and reorder, and we just went round and round. It's lookin' more like they intend on sending the Legend NOT C. I wrote them an email asking the same question. No response yet. Normally I wouldn't call or write, but at this point, I don't see that it will matter.
  19. Since I switched from IE to Mozilla, I haven't been bothered by popups at all. Still see files when I run Adaware, Spybot, Stinger, etc., but they don't seem to have any effect. If you are haunted by popups and spam, I recommend the switch.
  20. No email yet here either. I will wait a while longer to see if they eventually sell the Legend C. Then at least I have something to bargain for. But if they don't even sell the C, what can I do other than complain.
  21. sounds like when I go cachin' with my wife. We're walkin' through the woods and I'm sayin' ok, we're 350' away, 250', 100', 50', 20' and by the time I can look up from the GPSr to see where we are she says, "there it is, under that log". She gets such a kick out of always spotting them first, that I just don't mind. It keeps her coming out with me.
  22. They're pretty simple. Cut a block of wood (I use a furring strip, 2" x 1.5") Print out a color pic of the GPSr you want, in the size you want. Paste on to front of wood shape wood block with a Dremmel tool to resemble the shape of the GPSr. Paint black. Use push pins with black round heads as buttons. Drill hole in bottom and glue a looped string. That's the basics. You can get more creative with detail as you see fit.
  23. I am considering making several of these miniature Garmin etrex Legend C's as an item to place. They cost pennies to make, and about 20 minutes each. I think fellow cachers would get a kick out of finding one. They can be used as a desk ornament, or just get passed along. It will be interesting to see what folks think.
