looks like fun, but because of other commitments, Sunday is not a good day for me to attend these.. do you guys ever hold one of these on a Saturday? or maybe I should start an "Alternate-Alternate HOtM" thread
The HOTM is usually on Saturdays.

May AHOTM: Return to Squak Mountain. Sunday, May 16. This will be a through-hike from north to south; not sure of distance, let's say 6 miles (depends on number of cache detours). Our destination cache is Ode to a Crazy Monkey, nolenator's tribute to his recently archived Crazy Monkey Tripod.
Meetup: 9:30 am at the south (May Valley) entrance: N 47 28.900 W 122 03.261
We'll then carpool to the north entrance on Sierra Court and hike from there: 47 30.993 122 03.479
There are four caches I hope to get on this trek (been there, done the rest), and if you've never been to Squak, you might want to explore further, as it has several interesting caches, including one of the oldest in the state (Tie Mill, part of the History Challenge) and the historic Bullitt Fireplace (cache). My plan is to have lunch at Bullitt Fireplace, so that's definitely on the route.
Who's in?
I might be.

Hope I'm posting to the right thread.
Will be in Seattle via Ohio July 28th for five days and the one cache that has me perplexed is the A.P.E. Cache.
I have only one day for this cache and want to get it right. Any info and hints for this cache is appreciated.
Are there alot of bears, do I need a heavy jacket in late July, some cachers seem to take the wrong trail.
I really don't want to take a wrong turn here as a four mile walk is all I need. Post all hints or PM me. I'm sure I won't be back to Seattle (cost to much) and I really want the APE icon and the memories. thanks
If I count the days correctly, you are leaving on July 2, the date of this event. Bummer.
Be prepared for anything weather wise from rain and 40 degrees to sunshine and 80 degrees.
On the trail, the right trail is obvious after you cross the bridge over the creek. If you think you are looking at an old railroad bed and you have not crossed the bridge, it isn't. Otherwise, no problem.
Apparently WM you need to brush up on your math skill, maybe you've been retired too long. According to your calculation keithlemons would be leaving 26 days before he gets here.

I completely forgot about my Sunday soccer league starting up again and since I missed the first game this last weekend, I can't miss this weekend's game. I'll still plan to hike up to the ledge with everyone and then head back down on my own. Wish I could do the whole ridge hike!
It's a good thing you posted about your SUNDAY soccer league or I'd have been sitting in the parking lot SATURDAY morning wondering where the h3ll everyone else was.

I guess I should chime in with a will be there.
With my micro spikes just in case

So you got a new job and your boss laid you off two weeks early? I'd file for unemployment. Might only get a week but it's money in your pocket!
I think that might be illegal.
Nothing illegal about filing for something you're entitled to.
It might be a good idea to file anyway to get your waiting week out of the way. That way if you need it later on you get it right away w/o having to do the waiting week.

I guess I should actually say I'M IN.

I'm trying to keep an earlier promise for something south of Olympia but I keep running into too far south or too short of a hike. So it's taking me longer than usual.
I tripped across this one but it's all service road to the top so I'm reserving this for plan B if I don't come up with something by Saturday.
I'm looking around for Plan A for a trail hike. I'm open to suggestions as long as we get out of the Snoqualmie/Stevens rut and try to push a little more west so others in the outlying areas can join in on a hike.
Not to get too technical on ya but South Mountains not south of Olympia. Its as far north of Olympia as Federal Way is.
How about Buck's Crossing Between Elbe and Ashford on the way to the Nisqually entrance to Mt. Rainier and it is south of Olympia?
-
I will most likely be there. I have all of the caches up there except the one to the left once you get to the main trail, can't remember the name though. Wouldn't mind finding a ride from at least north bend to save a few bucks on the permit, I'll pitch in a few bucks for whoever I ride with though
I'll be coming form Federal Way so if you want we could hook up there.
Should you accept this challenge there are only a couple of rules for riding in the Land Rover:
1. I usually stop at McD's for a Mc(fill in the blank). If you're hungry and want something too, BRING YOUR OWN MONEY and don't say "I'm hungry but didn't bring any money" in a whiny voice.
2. At the end of the day don't leave you garbage in the Land Rover take it with you.
3. Don't make me come up with any new rules for the next newbie.
Note: Absence of emoticons intentional!

Another one I've been eying for quite some time is Aix & Pains near Bumping Lake. With the low amount of snow we got this year it seems like this would be a good late spring (May/June) hike before it gets too hot over there.

Walk softly and carry a big stick, or a handgun, whichever you prefer.
I prefer the handgun...
me too. Specially after stumbling on to a homeless person sleeping in the trees behind a hotel.
So you needed a gun as you intruded into someone elses "home".
That must be why burglars need to carry guns too, just in case they are confronted by an occupant of the residence in which they are intruding.

AndrewRJ risking life and limb for a photo op.
FYI My track log only showed about 8.2 miles after I weeded out the track wander from all the stops.
-
I'm a maybe, depends on how I feel after Saturday's hike.

I'm pretty sure I can make it, but won't know for sure til Fri. Is the mileage around 7round trip? it looks pretty flat. Are kids welcome in case I need to backpack my 4yrs old?
If we make it all the way to glacier falls cache it's between 10 & 11 miles. It is a pretty flat hike the only real elevation gain is between MC and glacier falls cache and that's not too bad (400' in .75 miles)

I plan to be there.
Speaking of expanding the HOTM zone I still want to head south and do Revenge of GP Crater Insanity.

Six of one half dozen of the other since I've done them both. Although I would like to see the new location of the Monte Cristo Concentrator Cache after all the hubbub about the cache being in a Superfund site (it wasn't) and such. That concentrator, the Boston American and 1 of 2 in the area, was never put into production as it was built in anticipation of the reactivation of the Boston American mine that never happened. The other concentrator is the one on the Superfund list, and it is surrounded by a construction fence to warn people away.
If it is decided to do Monte Cristo a visit to the Mont Cristo Preservation Association web site is a good starting point to get some accurate history and info about the area. Printing out a copy of the MCPA Brochure to bring along would also add a lot to the experience.

I'm considering this cache for the next snowshoe hike. Because the three day weekend also falls on Valentine's day, I don't dare use it, so I must choose between Coinapalooza and a Sequim event weekend. I'm thinking of 2/20. This is a difficult hike based on 6.5 miles RT with 3,500 feet elevation gain on the way in.
Could be another snow shoe hike that isn't too snow shoie. Recient Trip report from the cache owner.

I guess I'm too slow.

I'm leaning on the ain'tgonabethere side of the fence at this point. If I do make it it will be a last minutes decision and I may decide to rent some x-country skis to try out.
-
I was able to put off our shopping day until Sunday so I'm in.
I will have to rent some Snowshoes, but I am seriously thinking about joining you... Unless someone would be willing to lend me a pair.
I might be able to borrow you a pair from my SIL. I'll let you know by Wednesday.
-
I'm out.
The Saturday before Christmas is our annual Christmas shopping day the my lovely wife so nicely reminded me of this afternoon.

Looking like a small chance of snow, but I'm still game and my mom keeps asking me about it. Not sure about the step dad, but yeah, we'll see you there!
I'll make sure I bring my kayak paddles just in case
-
The knees feeling great so I'm in.
I have room in the Land Rover if anyone wants to carpool.

Oki doki, we seem to have traction for a South Sound expedition to Capitol Forest for the Green Beret Cache Hide, which is required for the History Challenge and notoriously hard to find. I've already found this one (twice), so this is my holiday gift to my geo-pals.
So, the plan for the December AHOTM is still to visit this cache on Sunday, Dec. 13. We'll meet at 9:30 am at the Farm Boy cache, which is in a parking area just off I-5 at exit 95, south of Olympia. From there, we'll take the back roads, and if the gate is open, drive to within a few hundred feet of the cache. (Email me if you want directions for the back roads to the cache site.) If the gate is closed, prepare for a six-mile hike (round trip) or to do something else.
After we accomplish our target mission, the troops will be dismissed. I plan to grab a few caches in Capitol Forest that I don't have.
So, who will be part of the platoon attacking the Green Beret site? Sing out!
My roster so far:
AHOTM Platoon:
Johnny Boy
NWCREW
Sol Seaker
Alnilam
Possible Recruits:
LandRover
ironman114
B+L
I'm still a maybe, won't know for sure until late next week.

For the adventurous there is the World Record Series. It will take you to at least a couple of the more obscure parts of the area.
