  1. The beauty of group hiking (with this group) is that no one person sets the pace for everyone, Allanon.

I second that. Just ask my dog. When we hiked Colonel Bob with a group of cachers, he made it to the summit about an hour before I did. (The traitor.)

But he waited for you at the top, didn't he? :tired:

He knew who had the food.

Yabut if I want to be there when speed demon Cathy finds the cache, either thry'll have to wait, or I have to start early...I've walked with these people before...they don't walk, they jog.

not this time, if they do hurry, there will be a good sized group in the back.

We could just tie a rope around her and me...that would keep her from going too fast. :P

Wow my speeling is badd today. :anicute:

Slow and steady is my motto, although I usually have to remind myself of that a couple of times. Until the down hill part that is, then I have no problem keeping up. I guess sea level is my friend.

  2. Ok, finally got this worked out. We'll be meeting at the TH at 9AM.

Overnight plans have changed to Sunset Mine for the overnight stay. Anybody is welcome to join us for the day or the night.

Allanon, I'm going to take you up on your gracious offer and leave my Jeep. SB and I will need coordinates.

I'm looking forward to watching LR find his #2000 at Lake Serene!

    Bookmarked

PM and Email on the way to you and Ray.

I may be out of my mind, but I may just do the hike to the LS Mine cache too for the LR 2000th...but if I go I'll probably leave the trail head a little earlier so I don't hold anyone up. We'll see how I feel later.

    What the… :anicute:

Every HOM I’ve been on has been three or four hikers, tops. This is starting to sound like the kind of party I can’t resist.

Follow the herd... Follow the herd.... :P I agree this is shaping up to be quite a group. I always want to make it to more of these hikes but usually I have something double booked that takes president. Glad I can make it this time. Anything needed for parking, like a NWFS pass?

Cache page says a NWFS Pass is required.

  3. That just confirms the decision to not go to French Peak if it looks like that at 2500 feet... :anibad:

Anyway, the current plan is to hit Lake Serene Mine, The Bride's Booty at Bridal Falls, and Welcome Houston! as a day hike. This is a heavy use trail so carpooling is preferred. I'll be meeting (location to be determined) up with SquareBear to drive in.

Afterwards, the current plan will see us heading to Boulder River to camp overnight near your Boulder River cache. This destination is subject to change pending further cache description inspections for a more localized drive.

What time do you plan on being a the TH? I'm going to be doing the Lake Serene Mine for my 2000th find. I will be carpooling with Poodleranch, Prying Pandora and Plaidguy.

  4. I'm going to do my best to make it to this one. :P

If I provided a Radio Flyer Red Wagon could you tow me behind you?

Ya know, while this creates a whimsical image, I'll bet it could be done!

If you bring this little red wagon we could all ride in it!

  5. I sure am happy about all the interest for future cache machines. Sure have had a great time at all the ones I've gone to. I hope to make 'em all. I guess the Port Townsend campout this August 17th could double as a cache machine too (yeah I know there was one here two years ago).

Hey, I didn't get to go to that one. It would be a fun idea, if someone scrambled & put one together for this!

Ohh.... I like that idea! I am unfamiliar with Port Townsend (I only spent about 2 hours there last fall on my way through finishing the WDC) but if someone (hint...TravisL :P) would put together a route I would love to help out however I could now that I have organizing one Cache Machine under my belt! I am planning to spend the week before the campout in the area on vacation (attending the Gig Harbor Renaissance Festival the second weekend of August) and would be in the area. Let me send a message to the Campout committee and see what they think...

Here is a link to the Fall 2005 Port Townsend/Port Angeles Cache Machine. If you didn't do that CM then all the work is done already, all you would have to do is sort through it and discard any found/archived/unavailable caches.

  6. I too think 100,000 feet is a little low. Spokane has an elevation of around 2000' so anyone that has done more than about 50 caches in the Spokane area has already done 100,000 feet and that does not really seem to be in the spirit of this challange.

I think maybe a cache should have some sort of a minimum elevation to qualify.

    Just my 2 cents.

  7. Well, AndrewRJ, I don't about your's, but my GPSr has a max speed of 410 MPH - and I haven't taken it on any airplanes. So three hours to Spokane is sloooow! B):cool:

On my drive over to Spokane last week my GPS maxed out at 106 MPH. I had to make up for all the time we took stopping to find caches.

  8. A few months ago I found a way to make Garmin's TOPO maps transparent so they showed up on my 60CSX at the same time as City Select. The method was posted here in the forum someplace but for the life of me I can't seem to find the topic any more.

    Anyone have any ideas?

  9. Now here's the difference between a real GPS and a toy. ;) The hack to add personal information onto the start up screen is what allowed him to call me and make the arrangements.

It's a feature on my Garmin, no need for a hack, of course that also means it's pretty easy for a thief to delete the information also.

  10. Does anyone have any intel for the trailhead and the road leading to it? If I can get the car in there, I can drive my car for the carpool. It gets better mileage than LR's Land Rover.

Either way my home coordinates are N47 20.086 W122 18.110.

Green house with the Land Rover and an Orange VDub in the driveway.

  11. I've got a new grandbaby on the way (September) and plan on being in Pt. Townsend in early April. If you can hang on to the baby backpack until then I will take it, if not that's okay too.

  12. Any tips or advice for a person driving in a cache machine for the first time?

Will I need a blindfold, just hope to follow a car or two, Ramming speed?

My advice for driving in a cache machine is to watch the following:

    Smokey and the Bandit,

Cannonball Run I, II, and parts of III (Three is also called Speed Zone!).

It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World,

The second season of Dukes of Hazzard,

    and of course,

All seasons of the Amazing Race on 3x speed on the VCR or DVD player.

Some people may recommend Speed Racer, but after all, that's a cartoon and not real life.

You forgot Death Race 2000

  13. I just tried downloading the route files from the cache page and I am receiving the message that the Geocities web site account has exceeded its transfer limit. Would it be possible to host these important files on a less restrictive site? If the transfer limit is being exceeded today, there's no way it will work as the date of the event draws closer.

I've found that you don't get the over limit message if you right click on the link and do a "Save As".

  14. I'll be there. It's been a long time since I was on a cache machine, and I kinda miss it. :)

If someone needs a navigator, I'm willing. Or, conversely, if you want to navigate, I'll drive. No leisurely coffee stops, though -- this is a cache machine, and I'm looking forward to a breakneck pace from 6:00 a.m. until dinner.

I guess that means you won't be caching with Prying Pandora again. :(:(:(:(

  15. I talked with one of the rangers at Dash Point last week and they were supposed to have a crew in to start removing the "dangerous" trees this past week end. Whether that happened or not I don't know. The ranger said the State only has three tree removal crews so I'm sure it's going to take some time before all of the parks are back up and operational.
