Hmmm...
Well I was going to go for a hike on the other side of the mountains on the 21st and then the GPS maze on the 28th.
So I am planning on doing 1000 Finds for Mahawking on Saturday the 14th. Anyone is free to join me.
We could also get
Hoagy’s Walkabout or at least parts of it
and Double Shot possible will be gone soon due to the building of a new fire station.
Is this a bikable route?
Most of it, I know that Evergreenhiker! says its bikeable to Cherry Cache 2 and then you continue up the road for a while before bushwacking to 1000 Finds.
I'm in. If you want I can borrow the SIL's bike again.
Time & place??

Versus the ridge line profile: It's a difference of 1.25 miles knocked off one way.
Any chance you can post larger versions of these so we can see just what we're in for?

Meet up time 9AM 2/28/09
Trailhead

If the forecast changes for the worse, I'll change everything for Silverton tomorrow night.
I'm not sure is this is part of the Gold Creek Sno-Park but if it is a Sno-Park Permit will be required for parking and "if" I remember right a NW Forest Pass isn't a substitute for a Sno-Park Permit.
I checked on the NWHikers board and they tell me that a Sno-Park Pass is required here.

So is there any thought yet on the February hike? If it is on the 28th I might actually be able to make it.
I'm leaning towards Snoqualmie Pass. Being that I've been barely holding my own with this bug, I haven't put much more thought into it, but will certainly make an announcment prior to the end of the 3 day weekend.
Well it looks like most of the good snowshoeing was done by a good part of you guys on snowshoes already in Snoqualmie Pass. I'm filtering out what I can to isolate what hasn't been hit yet, but I'm open to suggestions for snowshoeing.
There's Suntop Lookout off Hwy 410
or
Mt. Catherine or Kendall Knob at Snoqualmie Pass
I'm partial to all three. If anybody is interested, vote. Next Saturday the one with the most will be announced as the HOTM for the 28th.
Sorry you can't make it IM but thanks for the extra effort for a new trail!
I vote for the Kendall Knob hike. I have also been feeling under the weather for the last couple of weeks and not sure I'm up to either of the other hikes.

Is there a plan for the HOTM for March? There was some interest for a hike to the caches above Lake Lenore Cave before it gets too hot, too ticky, and too rattle snakey. Its snowing again and I need something fun to look forward to. Thanks for letting me whine, Tenya
There are no plans at this time. The hike to the caches above Lake Lenore Caves would be a good HOTM season opener. Caches to find on the hike would be:
And you're right, March is the best time to go there to avoid the critters. If I remember right, the total distance is just over 3 miles. Not a long hike, but a very interesting one through an ancient coulee. I've found those caches but would love to go again to check on my hides. Any one else interested in making this our first HOTM for 2009? Anyone want to suggest a date?
Hey, I think it is a great idea.
I am in too. I have done 2 of the 4 and they were a lot of fun. I can commit to the weekend of the 20th/21st. Earlier weekends I have other commitments that I would have to work around so not sure if I can pull it off with the family and all.
I like that weekend also as there is a strong possibility that I will be in Wenatchee that weekend anyway.

Is there a cache at Kendall Knob? If so, I'd vote for that one, as it's the shortest and relatively close, and therefore the only one I could possibly attend, as I have to be home between 5-6 that evening. So, my vote might should be discounted, anyways...
J&S's KPL Cache is fairly close to Kendall Knob although a bit of digging might be required.

Could I carpool from Federal Way with anyone down to that? Sounds interesting, but a little out of my bussing limit.
Not it!

Spend the summer training or you'll be miserable or won't make the top at all. Do a 1000-foot hike one weekend, then 1500 feet the next, and so on. Here are some candidates within driving distance of Portland, all with caches to entice you:
1000 - The top of Forest Park, starting from the bottom.
1500 - Angels Rest ("Angels Rest Cache" and others), Saddle Mountain ("Are You The One? #05")
2000 - Kings Mountain ("Kings Ransom")
2500 - Indian Point ("Cowboy and Indian")
3000 - Table Mountain ("Table Mountain"), Dog Mountain ("Dog Mountain Trail Cache")
3500 - (nothing comes to mind)
4000 - Larch Mountain, starting from Multnomah Falls ("Larch Mountain Picnic" and others)
4500 - (nothing comes to mind ... all I can think of is Ben Nevis but you can't drive there)
5000 - Mt Defiance, starting from the I-84 rest stop ("4895")
Has anyone made a similar sort of list for Seattle-area folks?
MsIDFC and I have paddled to the moon and back lately and are migrating towards hiking. I don't think we'll make St Helens any time soon (though MsIDFC is hot to trot about the MtM), but the list of progressive hikes is a really cool idea to combine with caching.
I was hoping one of the local uber-hikers either has a similar list or can whip it up off the top of their head?
Thanks in advance!
The Issaquah Alps (Cougar, Squak & Tiger) are a good choice for quick access.
West Tiger 3 can be had from many many different routes and of varying lengths but all with about 2000' or more of elevation gain, depending on which route you choose.
I believe the shortest rout to WT3 is about 1.5 miles up the Cable Line "trail". The main line WT3 Trail is about 3 miles one way but be warned it can be a very crowded.
And there are LOTS of caches in the Issaquah Alps for you to find.

I just wanted to say that Gadget is not alone with this. I too have had a run in with these particular cachers. Mine is not to the extreme that Gadget has gone through. For no reason they have singled Gadget out and are harrasing him, he should be able to find their caches without having a log deleted, encrypted, or being badgered on their cache page.
BTW, the cache owners encrypted his log and there were others who mentioned that it was along a busy highway and their logs are intact and this is the only road that you can use as it's the major highway.
I can only advise my philosophy I picked up back in 2004. When something stops being fun, stop doing the thing that aggravates you.
I have to agree with that philosophy, it took me a while to figure out but eventually I did figure it out. I had last week off and did a bit of cache maintenance and hunted for a couple of caches in my area.
Now I remember why it's been 6 months since I've hunted any caches within my 5 mile radius. Not terrible caches but unless I'm out group caching the urban experience just isn't my cup of tea anymore.

Oh say it ain't so we might have had to choose between going into a building so we can pretending we are geocahing out side and actually going geocaching outside.
Oh what shall I ever do??????

Hey it was only two calls one to find out if what we had found was the cache, it wasn't, it was a GPSthegame.com thingy
Where was that?
TL, it should be fall of the month, instead of Hike of the Month!
It was at Shy Bear Pass, you can't miss it.

I had a great time yesterday but apparently it wasn't enough so I went out with Nick today and did a 6 mile hike on Cougar and picked up 11 caches in the snow. I'm no longer a cougar Mountain virgin.
I can verify this, as I received several cache logs and phone calls. Congrats on losing your Cougar virginity, LR!
Hey it was only two calls one to find out if what we had found was the cache, it wasn't, it was a GPSthegame.com thingy and the other was for a hint on a P.O.S bison tube hidden on an old wrecked Ford in the woods.

I'm not sure why one would want topo without trails.
So that you could use the topo sort of like a basemap and use an alternate source for trails which could be updated much more frequently. Sounds like that's the plan here.
Which brings up a semi-related question: I was viewing various maps in MapSource and was not able to figure out how view more than one at a time. I really wanted to overlay the topo or trails over the street map, but I wasn't smart enough to do it.
Can it even be done?
I don't think this can be done. If it can, I sure wish I knew how!
Yes, there are tools that out there that allow you to make a map layer "transparent". I did this with mapsource TOPO so I am able to see City Select & the TOPO maps at the same time. I don't remember what the program was but I found it on the Groundspeak Forums a couple of years back.

Spotted the Mystery Machine on the way home the other day. I wonder if Shaggy, Scooby, and Velma were sneaking about the area.

If you used the small lunch size bags you could just scoop the Chili into the bags and use them as bowls. The clean up would be so easy.
Next would be the capture of the next generation of BioFuel.
Did I say that out loud?
Definitely so, but after much searching while preparing for the PNW debut of Frito Pies, it was discovered that the small bags are only found in a variety pack, and determined that Cheeto Pies are a significantly greater gastronomical abomination than Frito Pies.
I stopped by Cache Cash & Carry this afternoon and bought 25 2oz bags of Fritos.

I guess I should officially throw my stocking cap into the ring.

Ok, I may just have to try this one. Where does one rent snow shoes? REI?
This would be a good beginning snowshoe, not too physical. And pretty.
Yah, some REIs rent (call and check); probably some other sports stores do, too. Or maybe you can borrow a pair from one of our brethren who won't be going. There are a lot of snowshoe owners now!
Allow me to assist...
Wow, never seen that page, how useful! And it says every one of our REI stores rents snowshoes. Nifty keen.
Speaking of Snowshoeing & REI.....
The Southcenter store is having a snowshoeing clinic tonight at 7:00PM

I would think that the amount of rain we are currently experiencing, there will be more "scuba" caches soon.
Unfortunately, as the rivers carry them downstream, they are going to be hard to find. Maybe we need a new difficulty rating of 6.
I guess you could say they they have been muggled by God.

WP1 of the steadheads' Black (Diamonds) to Dust II is also a good source for leaf fossils.
