  1. Thinking about hiking up to Granite Mountain Lookout sometime next week, anyone interested in joining me? I've got next week off so my schedule is pretty flexible.

Skipping Granite Mountain. I decided to do a 17 mile hike and bike from Frying Pan Creek to Sunrise & back @ MRNP today.

Some time Friday morning we are headed up to the Masonic Campground on Mountain Loop Highway for the weekend. Planning a hike for Saturday, not sure where yet but someplace up there.

  3. I was only able to get within 5 miles of the park entrance. I was plowing snow for about the last 1/2 mile before I decided on plan B, Carbon River. First mile was snow free and snow the rest of the way to the patrol cabin @ Ipsut Creek. The snow was about 12" deep for the last 3/4 of a mile and I was breaking trail that last 3/4 of a mile. I had a nice hot lunch under the patrol cabin awning then made my way back, no snow shoes required so I'm glad I left them in the Land Rover.

  4. I'm going to hike up to Mowich Lake on Saturday FEBRUARY 22nd. I'm going to park as close to the park gate as I can get and set off up the road from there. I will be bringing snow shoes and hope to be able to use them at some point along the hike. It's about 5 miles of road walk from the MRNP gate to the lake. I plan on being at the parking area (N46 55.623 W121 54.943) by 0800 and hitting the trail by 0830.

  6. I have been planning on trying out some new camping gear so I may go over the night before and meet up in the morning.

There's a Tacoma Public Utility camp ground at the east end of Riffe Lake and Cherie and I will probably be taking the trailer out of hibernation and making a weekend camping trip out of it.

Looks like it is $16 for the tent sites there are 24 of them, $29 for a site with water and electricity hookups. Its first come first serve until May 1

I plan on taking the trailer down on Friday and camping for the weekend. There should be enough room on the site for a small tent or two "if" you wanted to stay at my site. You would still have to pay a $10 extra vehicle fee.

Are you guys talking about TAIDNAPAM PARK near N46° 29.6253' W122° 12.3630' and just off of Hwy 12? If so, it's no longer a little ol' 24 camp site. I can't seem to find any other TPU sites nearby according to the web site. Can the coordinates be confirmed. I'm thinking of this or a nearby area to group up at around 10:30. There still may be snow so plan for it.

Jeff, will you you emai me your inReach address? Mine is totemlake@ . I'll send a message when I'm on the way Saturday morning.

Thats the place I'm talking about. It's by no means a small campground.

  9. I'm not locked in on the 20th. So if I hear a consensus, moving the hike to the 21st or the following weekend can be a reality.

The following weekend doesn't work for me as I already have other plans.

  10. The second draft is posted. Thanks, JHolly, ACFunk, and Captain Trevos & Crew for the advice. Got any more suggestions? I plan to post the final route on Monday.

I've got a room at the Days Inn in Yakima ($126.86 for two nights with free cancellation, through their web site; $3 less non-refundable through Hotwire). They're #14 of 25 on TripAdvisor, but it sounds like they finished a remodel job within the last month, and two of the three reviews since then are both 5's. (The third one was ranked a 3 due to loud amorous noises from the room next door.)

For $6 more, I'm considering the Sunnyside Country Inn ($132.36 on multiple travel sites), but it seems like it's slightly lower quality for a slightly more convenient location.

I was somewhat surprised that Priceline wasn't able to find something for a $50 bid.

Booked my room at the Sunnyside Country Inn this morning, $136.50/2 nights + tax.

  11. We (2) are coming from Salem and have no information of the area. Saw this post on ape event this am. Sounds fun. But wondered how long the total trip will be for middle aged beginner hikers? Also is this the shortest route or is there a shorter way? The cords stated for meeting place is this by the ape event? How is parking? Any other info we need? On iPhone so can't see much at a time. Thanks

There is a shorter way but it's not for the faint of heart or the family Prius. You can park just below Wonkatania or Living on the Edge and bushwack your way straight up the hill, but again not for the faint of heart and the road is not for the family sedan.

  12. Some people in our little group are worried about the chance of thunderstorms tomorrow. We're still planning to head down and assess the weather situation when we get there. There's a chance we may choose to do a different hike, but we're still planning to meet at Paradise at the moment to decide.

Anyone else for sure planning to come?

Thunder schmunder, I will be there.
