  1. If I am out by myself or with other adults I just trade for sig items. When I'm out with my daughter then we trade anything. We are thinking about putting a baggie with some string and a bead. Then in other caches leave just a bead so that the little kids can make a caching necklace as they find caches. Not sure on this yet but an idea we are kicking around.

  2. I walked the Susan G Komen 3 day this year in Dallas and WOW what an experience. I love this coin and sent an email about it. Totally going to help you get to all of the events this year. I can't imagine the commitment it will take but what a great year of life changing events! Congrats on thinking of this wonderful way to bring your two loves together!

  3. I bought the Garmin connector cable, but only realized when I got home that it was a connector to a serial port, something that my computer doesn't have. Now I see Garmin also sells the adaptor for USB ports for an extra $60. Do I need the Garmin cable or can I get away with a generic USB to serial adaptor?

    Thanks

my laptop is the same way.. no serial..... the generic worked fine for the etrex legend i had =)

  4. i like that fimo nickel very cute!!!!!

the only recommendation i have for people leaving sig items make sure your names are on them so we know they are a sig item.....

the person that said they leave flower seeds... make sure they are in baggies so the packet doesnt get wet =)

i am also looking into pathtags but don't have the funds to be able to do them yet... hopefully soon =)

I have yet to experience the thrill of finding my first cache (I blame the ridiculous amounts of snow we have been receiving in the past month) but I have already created some signature items in preparation. I put together a stamp with my username and the year and I hand stamp both 1.5" wooden nickles and some handmade "fimo nickles" and put them into tiny ziploc baggies. They might be silly but I like them!

Also, check out this topic in the forums. It gives you a really good idea what others leave and I have seen some trading. Be aware that the older posts are from a few years ago!

  5. This might have already been a thread somewhere but i couldn't find one; and as this just happened to me i thought it would be hillarious to see what kinds of things happen to others to make them second guess their hobby.

I have been on one hunt, i don't even have my GPSr yet and i had a dream last night that i was walking in a park full of muggles and found a bunch of caches but i couldn't grab them in fear of everyone seeing them. It was torture!!! an entire nights sleep and i didn't get a single cache.

I just thought it was funny cause i have just started getting into this but i have sunk deep and gotten way too into it.

Did you dream-log them as DNFs? If not then you should do that tonight while you are sleeping.

i know i am a newbie but when i went to watch avatar in 3d with my hubby for new years eve and during most of the movie i kept telling myself..... if a cache was there it would def be a 5/5... ohhhh that would be a good place lol and yes i know i have it bad lol

  6. Ok, we all hear people bad mouthing McToys (aka McCrap). But lets face it, as a general rule, most of us don't even trade, it is really mostly when we have the kids with us that trading is done. So in my judgment, McToys are great! When I have my kids with me, they always love the McToys.

I don't think many people have an issue with McToys per se. I think a new one in it's original wrapper makes a nice trade item. It's the dirty, broken ones that look like someone found it under his car seat that many find annoying.

Yeah - ditto that - as long as there's still lots of room to repack the cache well, they are fine. My teens still like to trade for them.

I cache with my 8 year old daughter and she is super happy to see a mctoy or similar in there.. missing pieces or not because we don't eat out much and very rarely at fast food so its something new...she will play with the toy for a week or so and then put it back in her swag bag to trade at another cache!

Let her have what fun she can with 'em. Playing is serious business for kids. But if they are broken or missing parts just toss 'em out when she is done with 'em.

oh yea if they are missing pieces or broken or cruddy by the time she is done they dont go back in the swag bag

  7. have to put my 2 cents in on this subject

My 8 year always goes with me caching...... on weekends its normally just her and I but when we go out on weekdays either during school hours or after my 2 year daughter is with me..... i have had more looks being out on the rare occasion that im by myself then when i have one of the girls with me. When you have the kiddos you can go walking through the woods, down trails, down back road alleys or whatever and most people will be under the impression that you are just out for a walk with you child.... just smile or wave and act like you know what you are doing and where you are going.

but on that note do use discretion.. stay with some easier bigger containers as well as watching where you and he are going (i know this is common sense but just have to put this in) my 8 year is pretty good about watching for holes, dips, and drop offs but obviously i have to watch where the lil one is going and what she is doing... we dont do any of the creek bank caches when she is with us and the like.....

take him and have fun is my opinion better then him sitting in the house watching tv all day =)
